I got to thinking I could add some insight into launching a new tv network. Those of you who know me on this board know I'm legit. And verifiable via my website... Those of you who have on-demand cable access will be able to see me as the host of the new tv network Expo TV launching Oct. 1st. Before you rip me to pieces, let me tell you that Oprah is the financial backer of the network, the crew is from Oxygen Network and we filmed at Oxygen Studios here in NYC. First, while this network is also ONE CHANNEL its aim is to be advertiser-driven. Hidden in the content of what I say may be a plug for an advertiser or just some new news that the sponsor- say, for instance, Pepsi wants to promote a new product- wants to get out there to the public without making it seem like advertising, and that generates revenue for the network. It's not a commercial. I've seen a lot of questions on how that kind of thing works. So there ya go. Second, Expo plans to run 20 hours of programming for the cable operators to use to "launch" the network. That cycle will run for about 3 months +. Much like Q seems to be doing. Third, I don't know what kind of tv experience U4 has, but when he stated "UH, 67 FEET HIGH IS A JOKE. MOST STUDIO'S ARE AT BEST 30-FEET HIGH. TO MAKE IT SOUND LIKE WE HAVE 67 FEET TO "FLY" LIGHT/SOUND IS A JOKE AND MADE TO LOOK BETTER THAN WHAT IS MEANT" that's just absurd. I've never filmed in a tv studio that was 30 feet high. Where would the sets be stored? The boom itself is 15-feet +. A photo studio is about 30 feet high, but not tv. It's also important to have the right facilities to shoot in. We didn't have as much insulation as we needed on our last filming, so we would have to cut if the sound engineers caught a noise from outside in the audio, someone opening a door, etc. In all, even though there's financing behind Expo, it still has a strict budget until launch. I imagine it's much the same with Q. And, even with multiple professionals working on it, we have seen setbacks, reorganizations, mind changes and all kinds of difficulties wth our first productions. It NEVER goes smoothly. But that's the nature of the business, and it is to be taken in stride. you can't just go with initial decisions because you're afraid of making changes. Which is why I sit on my Q as a long, hoping that it all comes together in the end. Hope the insight helps. ~BB IP: Logged |

I thought your post was very good...appreciate all the information about studios...someone like me (teacher) would not have a clue what a sound stage or studio should be like...Thanks...loved your post. kkbpt, One more time--I posted what I was told. I was alarmed by the intensity of your demands and more importantly did not know how you were planning to use the information. So, I called back the next week (from my vacation hotel) and asked the same question. I was immediately connected to the supervisor (those calls are recorded) who then began questioning me about the employee. I ended the call without gaining any additional information--nothing to post the following week except fear of the damage that I had already done to the employee. I had published that young man's name on a public board! Do you understand the possible consequences of that? When I returned home, others had already posted similar experiences in other cities when they had called to confirm. The big debate of "Did we launch?" was flaming and some still continue to question it. I told the truth, tried to protect the employee and got attacked by you. Even though he gave me his name, I was wrong to publish his name without telling him before I posted it. Everyday, I read those same words on these boards, "Call and check it out." However, you don't ever call those members liars. I have read your other posts, and yes I do remember you stating that you "love Howard Stern". Could it be that you don't attack them because their member name does not reveal their gender? I don't know. Only you would know what is in your heart. IP: Logged |

i noticed a few posts about marco's and share count, being a cmkx long picking up possible share count is second nature...lol marco said if i'm not mistaken 1.8 billion shares or in the institional account? add his 350 mil for 25%, just over 2 billion X 4 and it comes out to 8.6 billion if my math still works. i'm too lazy to work the 2.5% thing out but since i'm used to cmkx o/s numbers i'm in love with 8.6 billion...lol IP: Logged |

I may have responded in the past over here about him if someone else brought him up but I'm not sure what that has to do QBID or our disagreements. The gender card... still laughing! IP: Logged |

Thank you, Skunsyard/Firefly ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Palm Springs, Calif., Broadcasters Say Time is Right for Gay-Themed TV Channel By Joseph Ascenzi, The Business Press, San Bernardino, Calif. The Business PressSeptember 13, 2004 Sep. 13--After years of planning, Palm Springs-based Q Television Network began broadcasting gay and lesbian programming 24 hours a day Sept. 8. Q Television announced Aug. 31 a movie licensing deal with Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution worth $700,000. The library includes "Dog Day Afternoon," "The Harvey Girls" and the mini-series "A Century of Women." On Sept. 7, a few hours before they were to board a plane for New York to meet with potential advertisers, Olsen and Chief Financial Officer Rene Schenk met in the Q Television offices in the Palm Springs Life building to discuss how they started their network. QUESTION: What has been the most difficult part about getting this [network] started? OLSEN: I don't want to get into that. The whole thing has been difficult. Lining up advertisers hasn't been easy. The production end hasn't been easy. It's been 18-hour days seven days a week. Q: Triangle Multi-Media Limited Inc. [Q Television's parent company] sold its radio operations and made a move into television. How is this different from radio? OLSEN: I was in radio for years. Radio is easy compared with this. It's cheap, it's easy and it's profitable. Television is a lot of work. We had radio [gay-oriented syndicated programming that originated in Seattle on KTNB-AM and KBRO-AM ] but we sold that. That was just a steppingstone anyway. The radio was a way to get into television. Q: How much opposition do you expect from the religious right, or from anyone else? OLSEN: I don't expect any, really. Maybe ACT-UP [the gay rights group] will attack us for not being political enough. Actually, I wouldn't mind a little opposition. Q: In February, you said selling advertising would be difficult and that advertisers "don't want to pick up one gay person and lose two Christians." How do you avoid being too offensive to some advertisers? SCHENK: That's a pitfall we're going to have to avoid. We're going to be as gay as we can be, but there's a lot more acceptance out there than there used to be. There's no doubt in my mind that this is the right time to do this. Q: Why? SCHENK: The gay and lesbian communities are the last big untapped market out there. The Hispanic market has been heavily tapped, now it's time for the gay and lesbian market. There are about 30 million people in the United States who call themselves gay or lesbian, and they have about $500 billion to $700 billion a year in disposable income. Twenty-two percent of them have graduate degrees. OLSEN: Two things have happened that that have made this the right time for us. The first is when Viacom said the gay market is so big and so lucrative that they wished they had gone after it sooner. Well, that made my job about 10 times easier because in television, Viacom is the ultimate authority. That was the Pope talking. They practically did my job for me. Q: What was the second thing? OLSEN: Digital. That was the greatest thing that ever happened for us, because it means we don't have to scramble our signal. It also means that we can aim our signal right at our subscribers. The only way you can get us is to be a subscriber. So that means the advertisers don't have to be afraid to advertise with us. Q: Black Entertainment Television has been criticized for moving away from African-American programming and becoming a conventional network operated by black people. How will you keep your network from becoming a network run by gay folks? OLSEN: Black Entertainment Television was a money sucker. It wasn't making money, so it decided to go in another direction. We're going to make money. We're developing our own programming, and there's plenty of gay programming out there already that we can buy. Q Television will spend $370,00 a month for outside programming and $200,000 on production. The network will charge $7.95 a month to subscribers with a goal of attracting 150,000 subscribers during its first year, and it will charge between $150,000 and $200,000 to advertisers for yearly advertising packages. Programs will include talk shows, movies ----- To see more of The Business Press, or to subscribe to the newspaper, go to http://www.thebizpress.com. AH, MORE LIES IN PRESS IF YOU WANT TO CALL IT THAT. LET'S DO SOME SIMPLE MATH: Q FAILED TO LAUNCH 4+ YEARS AGO. WE HAVE REDUCED OPERATING EXPENSES TO $33,000 PER MONTH AND WHO-KNOWS WHAT EXPENSES WERE PRIOR TO THAT. THAT IN AND OF ITSELF IS TOTAL CRAP ABOUT HAVING $33,000 MONTH OPERATING EXPENSES. $33,000/MONTH X 4 YEARS = $1,584,000 SO I'M CURIOUS. WHERE DOES ONE MILLION FIVE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS COME FROM? FURTHER, NOTHING WAS BEING DONE WITH Q. $190,000 PER MONTH FOR A NEW PROGRAM. THAT'S FUNNY, I CAN RENT A ENTIRE STUDIO WITH CREW WITH FULL EDITING FOR $1250/HOUR. $50,000/MONTH IS AVERAGE FOR A SMALL STATION (Q-HASN'T EVEN BROADCASTED) TO PUT OUT A PROGRAM. OH WONDERFUL, WE HAVE A MOVIE PACKAGE "WORTH" $700,000. OH PLEASE. TOTAL CRAP AND FLAT OUT LIE. TO OBTAIN THE RIGHTS TO MOVIES THAT HAD NEVER BEEN RELEASED AND DATE ALL THE WAY BACK TO 1940; MAYBE THE WIZARD OF OZ AND FRANK APPEARS TO BE THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTIN WANTING THE BROOM. LINING UP ADVERTISERS HAS BEEN THE HARDEST PART OF STARTING THE NETWORK? WHAT ADVERTISERS? ABSOLUTELY HULARIOUS. I GUESS THAT SAUCE STUFF ON THE WEBSITE WAS A REALLY DOOZIE OF A DEAL TO COORDINATE. FRANK DOESN'T EXPECT ANY OPPOSITION FROM THE RELIGOUS SIDE.... HULARIOUS. PROBABLY CAUSE YOU HAVE NO Q-TELEVISION. GAY MARRIAGE STEMS ALL THE WAY UP TO THE PRESIDENT AND MAJOR MEDIA EVERYWHERE, THE CHRISTIAN SIDE HAS PUT OUT WHO TO VOTE FOR AND DO NOT SUPPORT GAY MARRIAGE AND FRANK OLSEN SAYS HE DOESN'T EXPECT ANY OPPOSITION. NOW THAT IS FUNNY; HEY FRANK, YOUR LATE FOR YOUR AA MEETING! ADVERTISERS DON'T WANT TO PICK UP ONE GAY PERSON AND LOSE TWO CHRISTIANS. OH PLEASE.... HULARIOUS. BETTER CHECK OUT YOUR GAY MAGAZINES WITH HUNDREDS OF "BIG NAME" ADVERTISERS. FURTHER, WE HAVE PLENTY OF "GAY" PROGRAMMING ON REGULAR TV AND THE ADVERTISERS AREN'T HAVING A PROBLEM THERE. YOU CAN'T FIND ADVERTISERS BUT YOU ALSO TOSS OUT 500-700 BILLION IN UNTAPPED DOLLARS. THEN FOLLOW UP WITH VIACOM WISHES THEY HAD STARTED THEIR GAY STATION EARLIER. NOW TOSS OUT A COMMENT THAT B.E.T. WAS A MONEY SUCKER. HEY FRANK, GUESS WHAT... BETTER REVIEW WHAT BET VIEWER BASE IS AND WHAT IT JUST SOLD FOR. NOW YOUR GOING TO SPEND $370,00/MONTH FOR OUTSIDE PROGRAMMING AND $200,000 ON PRODUCTION FOR A TOTAL OF $570,000/MONTH. NOW ADD $33,000 MONTH TO THAT AND $603,000 PER MONTH TIMES 12 MONTHS IS $7,236,000/YEAR. THE MATH ISN'T ADDING UP FRANK THE DRUNK <HICCUP> NOW YOU INTEND ON GETTING $150,000 - $200,000 PER YEAR FROM EACH ADVERTISER FOR A STATION THAT CAN'T BROADCAST. YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE A SIGNAL FOR ADVERTISERS TO LOOK AT SINCE 'SOFT' LAUNCH FOR THE PAST 3 MONTHS. HEY FRANK, YOUR FULL OF CRAP. QBID IS A MONEY SUCKER. IP: Logged |
