FYI...I read in today's business sections of my local newspaper that Sumner Redstone, chief executive of Viacom has said that he has been in discussions with U.S. cable operators about the possibility of launching a gay and lesbian channel. It did not mention any specific operators and this may not have anything to do with qbid. Just thought I would pass this along.

It's Back – Viacom's Gay TV Channel Resurfaces

The surging popularity of programs such as "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" has prompted Viacom to reconsider an idea it abandoned two years ago -- launching a television channel catering to gay and lesbian viewers.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Sumner Redstone, chairman and CEO of Viacom, admitted that his company missed a valuable business opportunity by not going forward with its original plan. He told analysts and investors that the channel would have cost only $30 million to launch at the time and could be worth a billion dollars now.

In 2002, Viacom announced plans for its Showtime and MTV units to work together to develop a network targeting gays and lesbians tentatively titled Outlet; however, nothing materialized. Viacom spokespeople declined to be interviewed for this article; however, Bob Witeck, CEO of Witeck-Combs Communications, a Washington, D.C.-based marketing agency that served as a consultant to Viacom during the initial project development, said the company's decision to put its plans on the back burner did not mean Viacom had a lack of commitment to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community. The company has produced other successful gay-themed projects, such as the Showtime drama "Queer as Folk."

"Viacom's interest has always been consistent," said Witeck. "Timing was an issue because advertising was flat."

This time, given the improved advertising environment, Witeck said Viacom is likely to take an alternate approach by focusing on creating an advertising-supported rather than subscriber-paid channel.

"We are prepared to give it a go, and I'm optimistic about it," Redstone told The Associated Press, adding that "there's no reason why we shouldn't reach such an enormous demographic, not only in the United States, but in the world."

With an estimate of 17 million people by PlanetOut Partners, a gay and lesbian targeted media company, the GLBT market is considerably smaller than other niche consumer groups; however, with the $485 billion that Witeck-Combs has identified as GLBT buying power -- a number which Witeck describes as somewhat conservative -- the group rivals the buying power of African Americans and Latinos reported by the University of Georgia's Selig Center for Economic Growth. In addition, research has shown that the average income of GLBT households is higher than that of U.S. households overall.

Viacom may face competition in the GLBT broadcast marketplace. PrideVision TV, a Toronto, Ontario-based channel which touts itself as the first 24-hour GLBT network in the world, and The Triangle Television Network (TTN), also are vying for a piece of the GLBT market in the United States.

TTN attempted a soft launch in early September 2001, but Steven Grunberg, the company's president of programming, found that few people or companies were interested in a gay network following the Sept. 11 attacks. The company is planning to reintroduce the channel with a soft-launch of a programming block on May 15 and the full launch of the 24-hour network on June 15. The channel, which will air movies, series and documentaries of GLBT interest, will be available to cable and satellite subscribers for an additional fee.

"Because of gay marriages, because 'Queer Eye' is the No. 1 show in Bravo's history, people are becoming aware of the market's potential," said Grunberg.

PrideVision TV, which launched in Canada in 2001, hopes to enter the U.S. GLBT market this year. In Canada, the channel offers a mix of programming including 10 original shows, as well as movies, comedies, dramas, lifestyle shows and documentaries and receives between 65,000 and 95,000 unique visitors each week. It is currently is distributed as a Category 1 protected channel, which means that all cable and satellite TV operators in Canada are legally required to provide the option of subscribing to PrideVision TV available to all customers. PrideVision will not have that distribution assistance in the United States; however, the company has signed a distribution deal with Time Warner.

Witeck said that regardless of how networks' approach the GLBT market, it is critical for them to provide quality programming.

"Just being gay is not sufficient," said Witeck. "It has to have something that competes with other quality offerings…. Gay people don't expect or choose to be pandered to."

In order for these networks to survive, this quality programming will need to be supported by relevant advertising. There are few companies that are currently airing gay-targeted television commercials. More of the GLBT advertising efforts appear in print media.

"If you look at the gay press, you've got everybody in there," said Grunberg. "They just have to make the next step into video commercials."

Witeck predicts that initial advertising on these gay networks will be mainstream commercials. PrideVision's Jason Hughes, director of sales and marketing, said that has been the case for the channel.

TTN's Grunberg doesn't anticipate that being a problem.

"Look at some of the commercials that have popped up with gay content," said Grunberg. "We still have a great sense of humor and we appreciate things done tongue in cheek."

Hughes agrees.
