MTV said to revive plans for gay cable channel

For the past several years, Viacom Inc., the media giant that owns such networks as CBS, MTV and Showtime, has volleyed around the idea of producing a gay-themed premium cable network. Just as that idea appeared dead, a report has surfaced that the company is resurrecting plans for the network.

According to reports by Reuters and the Hollywood Reporter, Viacom is renewing plans to launch the all-gay network, known at this stage as Outlet. The channel is to be revived by the MTV Networks, according to the reports, which had worked on the project for several years with its corporate sibling, Showtime Networks.

Showtime first developed the idea a decade ago, but plans for the network were placed on the back burner indefinitely last year.

“Due to the current economic climate, the timetable has slowed down for the development of a new network dedicated to programming to the gay and lesbian audience,” Viacom officials said in a statement at the time.

A source at Showtime said they had not heard anything new regarding the project, but directed inquiries to MTV instead. Officials at MTV and Viacom did not return calls seeking comment by press time.

But an independent media company has apparently beaten Viacom to the punch.

In December, Palm Springs, Calif.-based PrideNation Networks launched the country’s first 24-hour gay-themed TV network — at least in a manner of speaking.

For $5.95 a month, people anywhere in the world with a broadband computer connection can access the network through their computer. For a separate fee, they can purchase hardware that transmits the network to their TV.

But Allen Edwards, the president of PNN, said the fact that the network wasn’t on cable was actually a benefit, not a hindrance.

“Basically what we’re able to do is we really have no limits, because we’re not on cable, we’re not on satellite or mainstream television, so we can really present the community in reality form,” Edwards said.

NOTE: 3 day's later the stock jumped to .0036

the price range for that hour was a high of .0028 and a low of .0026 volume was 46mil shares for that hour.

Is being out, in? Hollywood seems to think so - at least for the moment.
It's been the year for the queer in terms of the huge success of gay-themed shows like "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." Despite seeing the Fab 5 overdo the red carpet, these guys have broken down barriers by bringing some much needed advice to the average heterosexual male - not to mention they've made some pretty sweet home makeovers, although we've yet to figure out what Jai's job is. The show became so popular that the series' stars spiffed up Jay Leno on the "Tonight Show." Ok, so the pin striped suit and big belt buckle weren't a good look for him but at least Leno was up for it. That would have never happened five years ago.

At one time, being gay in Hollywood meant the risk of career suicide. Even now, actors know they're highly unlikely to nab romantic leading man/leading lady roles if they're openly gay. Maybe that, too, will change if recent trends continue. Today, stories of the outrageous lengths to which actors went to remain closeted, of false front marriages of convenience - ala Rock Hudson's union with Phyllis Gates, his agent's (and long time lover's) secretary -- seem relics of a bygone era.

With gay entertainment earning more and more recognition, more stars are out - Sir Ian McKellan, Rosie O'Donnell, Rupert Everett, Elton John. R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe came out in an interview with Time magazine in 2001. Melissa Etheridge and girlfriend Tammy Lynn Michaels exchanged vows in a Malibu ceremony last year. Just look at the amazing success Ellen DeGeneres has had this past year with her new talk show which has picked up 12 Daytime Emmy nominations.

However, for DeGeneres, being openly gay didn't come without a price. She received bomb threats for her bold decision to reveal her sexuality on her sitcom "Ellen" and a year later her show was cancelled.

"It destroyed me," said DeGeneres, looking back. She noted that after years of trying to make audiences happy and wanting desperately to be loved - "that's why anybody gets into this business" - it was stunning to find herself hated. Times have evolved and DeGeneres's sexuality is definitely not hurting her now. She has pulled off what has been called one of the greatest show business comebacks of all time.

In a matter of a few years, the word gay seems to have become mainstream when it comes to show business. It was big news in 1996 when "Friends" came up with its "The One With the Lesbian Wedding" episode, wherein conservative political leader Newt Gingrich's real-life sister, openly gay Candice Gingrich, played the minister who performed a wedding ceremony for Ross's ex-wife and her girlfriend. Now we're used to gay storylines as a TV stock in trade. 1998 marked the premiere of one of the first primetime shows putting a positive light on homosexuality, the ever so popular "Will & Grace." Although we have never seen Will in an actual relationship let alone kiss another man, the show paved the way for other gay characters like ABC's dad duo in "It's All Relative," a bisexual babe in NBC's "Coupling," and a lesbian ex-wife in CBS' "Two and A Half Men." The cable networks have taken it to the next level with "HBO's" risqué "Queer as Folk" and Showtime's new lesbian drama "The L Word." Of course MTV got in on the action having the Russian group t.A.T.u perform at the 2003 Movie Awards. The 2 singers who happen to be lesbians sang "Not Gonna Get Us" while the stage filled with hundreds of girls taking off their skirts, dancing only in tank tops and underwear. Now we've got reality game shows featuring gay men like "Boy Meets Boy" and the new "Playing it Straight." Who knows what's next?

Although QBID and EDIG are to different companies,but they have the same momentum potential..EDIG in the year 2000 was the hottest penny stock around that went from pennies to dollars and I mean dollars...EDIG had what was hot in technology platform for digital video, music/voice, voice/video and player/recorders.That field was explosive and the company yielded superb returns for shareholders,but like all pennystocks,this company came apart and is back to the ground floor without much to show for it..If you placed this in your sockdrawer and came back to see it now you would be surprised to see the high around $20.00+ and this came from pennies..

Now we have QBID and the ever promising G/L channel.Even though this company had launch failures and other setbacks,the time for this venue is now politicaly correct and Americans,folks world over appear to have accepted this alternative lifestyle as part of civil society..If this company can launch their cable cahnnel without a hitch,we very well could see a price range of well over $4.00 within weeks of the announcement..

Here is what I see within the next month or so..On or about May 1st the company will get their launch date,but this is actually the signal or feed..Between now and then,it is conceivable that by the time the feed is on, QBID will be trading at about .20 to .35..So I expect within the next couple of weeks we will trade at .01 to .05..After they get the feed and start their programing,which probably will be within weeks, the company will trade well over $4.00

Now, I may be over zealous,but I feel after just what has transpired over the last few months with respect of the gay community getting much attention without real public outcry for their marriages by radical judges and mayors, their time has come and this cable channel can be huge with the proper marketing..

This is on the same lines as BET,Lifetime,Discovery and a whole slew of other cable channels,this one just happens to be a gay channel.

Yep! I'm glad I took a chance on this as well. I thought $4. was a little rich with in weeks of launch but you never know.

Actually I see the stock responding to PRs about new sponsors signing on. Might be wrong but that's where I believe we get our best moves.

I like your posts as to OS does not make as big a difference as some think. I couldn't agree more. I bought SIRI for pennys & continue to kick myself for taking profits all to soon. I rode that stock well over a buck & knew it had over a billion plus OS. Let a stock become the darling of Wall Street & it doesn't make adifference what they they say on CNBC, the stock runs.

I'm one of those people where fear of missing the monster gains completely outweighs fear of losses. My biggest drawback is that I'm greedy enough that 50 & 100% profits are not good enough for me. This time that's going to work in my favor. I've already sat on this thing from .0004 & have not sold a share. Matter of fact I'm actually thinking of buying more.

I will not be selling any at .10! Maybe a few at .50 just to secure winnings so to speak but the vast majority of my shares will be held past a buck & that in my very humble oppinion is simply a matter of time!
