i can't find anywhere that they ever stated it would be digital. and i really think that would be good news, because a lot of people outside of metropolitan areas don't have digital cable. i found this in their PR's: " The company's programming will be available on a subscription basis to those desiring its programming. The network will broadcast 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Providing distribution via satellite ensures availability of the network across the United States, including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico." and this: "basic cable" usually does not include digital channels- just channels 1-13 etc. in my experience anyway...

~bb....from the q website...... Q TELEVISION NETWORK CONFIRMS SOFT LAUNCH Q Television Network continues its drive towards its public launch and will air on May 15, 2004 a test of its broadcast signal. This signal will be sent out in analog format and will be viewable to all C-band dish owners. After this test is concluded, network will revert to a digital scrambled signal as it continues towards its regular soft launch to cable, satellite and advertising concerns. Further information regarding satellite and transponder for viewing will be posted in the coming days IP: Logged |

The signal is sent in digital format to the cable company... they can then choose if they send it out in digital format, or analog. I'm an AV junkie, just throwing in my .0045 cents worth. ------------------ IP: Logged |

edit: i didn't state this well.. let me try to clarify. when Q states they are sending out a digitized, scrambled signal, i infer they mean to the CABLE OPERATORS. The satellite carries the signal to local cable companies (scrambled so that it isn't picked up by consumers along the way). the cable operators then DESCRAMBLE the signal and carry it via coaxial/fiber optic cable lines to paying subscribers. So, the method by which Q sends their signal has nothing to do with the method by which it is received at a consumer's tv. That's up to the cable company. Ok- is that any clearer? ----------------------------------------- even "basic cable subscribers" are hooked up to a cable which carries the digital signal. wish i had my lingo better, but do you know what i mean?

"Fully digital master control" has nothing to do with their signal. It refers to their operations equipment. In case you're wondering, I used to be a Master Control Operator at a network O&O.

By JOHN LEICESTER, Associated Press Writer PARIS (AP) — The transgender sportscaster wears a miniskirt, the porn is gay, lesbian and bisexual, and Wonder Woman will be on every night at seven.
France's first gay television channel, PinkTV, is an eye-opener. And that's the point. Pink's founders believe there's a ready audience for the channel, and not just among France's estimated 3.5 million gays.
She's also keen on marginal sports like — yes — underwater hockey. "It's totally mad," she said. Houzelot said about 50 percent of programming will be devoted to subjects "of direct interest to or consecrated to gay guys and girls." "Perhaps we'll set ourselves apart in the way we tackle subjects and the subjects that we tackle," he said. "Clearly, it will address itself in the first instance to gays but is much larger than that and will, I hope, seduce a diversified public." ___ On the Web: Pink site: www.pinktv.fr IP: Logged |

9/23/04 11:07 AM RCN Completes Network Upgrade to Provide Manhattan with the Best in Digital Services - PR Newswire RCN Completes Network Upgrade to Provide Manhattan with the Best in Digital Services In conjunction with the network upgrade, RCN has seen an increasing number of its customer base taking bundled high-speed data and phone services in addition to cable TV, with almost 75 percent of second-quarter 2004 installations coming from its product bundles. In addition, average revenue per customer (ARPC) climbed 30 percent during the last 12 months, and average services per customer (ASPC) grew 25 percent in RCN's upgraded two-way buildings. RCN designed and built the MegaBand (R) network with tomorrow in mind, making future product launches and service enhancements easy and more cost effective, unlike other existing local competitive networks. "RCN's network is second to none. It gives us a competitive advantage,"said PK Ramani, general manager for RCN's New York market. "With this upgrade, we're making an investment in our customers. We're excited to provide them with a robust suite of products and services that will provide choice and give them the best telecommunications value available." Besides RCN's core triple-play bundle of cable television, local- and long-distance phone and high-speed Internet, RCN's lineup of digital products includes: MegaModem Mach7: The fastest two-way residential Internet service in the city at 7 megabits per second downstream and up to 800K bps upstream is more than six times faster than DSL and double the speed of the competition's high- speed Internet service. MegaModem Mach 7 far exceeds any other Internet provider which typically only offers downloads speeds of up to 3Mbps and upload speeds of up to 384Kbps. With the faster speed RCN delivers, customers can enjoy: Impulse On-Demand: RCN's Video-On-Demand (VOD) product provides customers with the latest movies and more to enjoy -- at their leisure-- with full VCR- like control. HDTV: The revolution in television viewing -- providing customers with a state-of-the-art movie theatre-like experience. RCN offers the most channels of HDTV programming in New York (including ESPNHD, DiscoveryHD, HBO and more) with unparalleled sharpness and detail. DVR (Digital Video Recorder): Digitally record favorite shows without a VCR. i know with time warner nyc, i have 2 cable options: my old option was $20/month. it gave me around 20 channels and was called "basic cable". i had no option for pay-per-view, video on demand, etc. it was "basically" the minimum service they offered, and i didn't even need a cable box to get it- i could run the coaxial cable right into the plug on my tv. my current option is called digital cable- and the minimum package is $60/mt. I have access to digital subscriber services like VOD/PPV/and an extra 1000 channels that come with the digital service. and i get a fancy cable box. the only difference in the setups has been the cable box I have. eh, who knows? sounds like RCN has greatly improved NY's cable. the US is 11th in broadband in the world, our cable & internet systems are way behind. if RCN's 7mgs internet connection is true i think thats the fastest in the country IP: Logged |

i used to have RCN when I lived downtown. they rocked. it was approx 5 years ago, and they were the contract provider to my building for all cable/internet broadband services. basically, if you lived in the building, you got their signals. their customer service was excellent. i even remember calling at 11p one nite cuz (i think it was the tyson fight) wasn't coming thru properly. they took care of it over the phone immediately. i just loved them, but had never heard of them before. think they still provide services to a few of the luxury buildings downtown. but i think it's mostly high-end apartment buildings. I reply-emailed Jim Downing @ RCN this morning and just received his response. Here is the email: Mr Downing, I just have a few more questions, if you don't mind. Will the cities that begin to receive Q Television in October be given a 'free preview" also? Is the missing audio part of the "free preview" or is there still a technical issue to resolve? Also, I noticed that Q Television is now listed on the San Francisco channel line up on your website, but they are listed as "Qtv". Shouldn't they be listed as "Q Television", "Q Television Network", or "QTN" since there is already a "Qtv"? Additionally, it is not flagged as a digital channel and I thought that was digital. Am I incorrect or will that happen when the signal is scrambled? Thank you in advance for any information you can provide. I'm sure that you're being bombarded with questions, so your response is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, ******* *******"
"The free preview was just in SF as part of the inaugural launch on RCN, and the technical issues have been resolved. The website now says Q Television Network instead of QTV..." Well, he answered most of the, but we'll just have to keep speculating on the 'digital' issue. [edit spelling] [This message has been edited by pharmdman (edited September 28, 2004).] IP: Logged |

Yes, I think Trump does have RCN. Also it was posted on an earlier thread that some buildings (condos) owned by Time Warner have RCN. Seems that RCN provided more for less wth their best-of-the-best bundled services. First alternative television network broadcast first on the best of the bundled services carriers! .......I need more shares.
