Q gets into a little bit of drama: http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2004/10/08/BAG4M9613V1.DTL BATTLE OVER SAME-SEX MARRIAGE Denver -- The nearly four dozen riders on the National Marriage Equality Express -- a caravan of activists traveling cross-country to fight for marriage rights for same-sex couples -- were on edge. They'd encountered little hostility and a lot of warmth in the places they'd visited in Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. On Wednesday, they had visited Laramie -- the town where Matthew Shepard, a gay student at the University of Wyoming, had been brutally murdered six years ago. Most considered the stop a highlight of the trip, but that horrible tragedy and the personal memories of violence the visit triggered were on their minds Thursday morning when one of the caravan passengers inexplicably disappeared. Sometime after midnight Wednesday, Anthony Perez, a documentary filmmaker following the journey for the new gay and lesbian channel, the Q Television Network, walked out of his Denver hotel room without his cell phone or card key. He did not show up when the riders met in the hotel lobby the next morning. He didn't make it to the breakfast meeting with local gay and lesbian supporters or to the rally in Denver's Civic Center Plaza. When Perez still hadn't shown up by 11 a.m., the scheduled departure time, the bus left without him. Bewildered, Roland Torres, the other half of the documentary team, stayed behind and notified police. The group's leaders, concerned that the riders might encounter anti-gay violence in the American heartland, had been lecturing from the start about safety. "I'm very, very angry," organizer Molly McKay said of Perez's disappearance. Her eyes were red-rimmed. "If you can't commit to the buddy system, take the next bus home." At a memorial gathering the previous day in the Laramie bar where Matthew Shepard had stopped the night he was attacked, several of the riders had told personal stories about violence they had experienced. Kelly Rivera Hart had nearly been shot -- he didn't know if it was a BB gun or a real gun -- while he waited at a bus stop in San Francisco. Joe Alfano had been beaten up on the Lower East Side in New York. Davina Kotulski, who came out when she was 15, was harassed all through high school in the small Oregon town where she grew up. When she was 18, someone at a party threw a table on her and threatened to gang rape her. The stories they'd been sharing hung heavily as the riders formed a circle and silently held hands, before filing soberly back onto the bus in Denver and resuming their journey -- which was starting to feel like a strange psychology experiment. As the mountains of Colorado melted into the flat plains of Kansas, the mood on the bus was tense. After traveling at a relentless pace for three days, the riders were exhausted. They were drained from the emotional intensity of their encounters -- one woman said she cried so much it was like watching the movie "Terms of Endearment" over and over. And now one of their number was missing. A couple of hours later at a rest stop, McKay picked up the microphone. "Good news," she said. She had gotten a cell phone call from the filmmakers. Though the reception was poor, this much she confirmed: "Anthony's fine ... They'll meet us in St. Louis." Claps, sighs. Three days earlier -- before the exhaustion, the giddiness, the emotional circus, the hours curled up in small bus seats -- organizers announced that any latecomers on the bus would be charged with cleaning the bathroom. Now the cry started from the back. "Latrine duty! Latrine duty! Latrine duty!" Speaking again by phone later in the afternoon, Perez explained what had happened. He had gone to the hotel lounge for a late-night drink and had been stopped by a security guard. Perez, a 26-year-old Latino man, apparently didn't have the right answers for the guard: He had accidentally left his key behind, he didn't know his room number. The guard called the police, who took him to a detoxification center. Without his cell phone or contact numbers or even quarters for a pay phone, he hadn't been able to reach anyone until he was released in the afternoon -- to the enormous relief of Torres, the other filmmaker. "I was petrified" that Perez had been attacked, Torres said. "It's so sad that that's a knee-jerk reaction for gay people." The Chronicle is covering the National Marriage Equality Express as it crosses the country. To see all the stories, go to www.sfgate.com. The caravan riders are also posting Web logs and photographs of their adventures at the Web site www.marriageequalityca.org. IP: Logged |

Well I just did a search with key word paid bashing stock and I got so many hits it was silly. How can you say you did a search and found nothing. READ THIS from the Wall Street Journal: A little preview, click link to read all; Message Boards There's no question that message boards can be a great resource. But they can be dangerous places, and investors have lost fortunes by trading on information they read on the boards. Securities regulators say they are troubled by the fact that so many investors seem to believe the message boards are full of hot "sure-thing" stock tips. Message boards shouldn't be viewed as any different from a crowded room full of strangers. Trading on advice there is akin to trading on stock tips you receive from a stranger's conversation you overhear at a party. Still, people do it all the time. In fairness, message-board users have at times come up with quality "scoops" about companies -- catching wind of a merger before it happens, or learning that the company has secured a patent on a new technology. But often the information on the boards is pure speculation. It's important to understand that just about everyone who posts messages has a motive, and it may be different from yours. When money is at stake -- as it is with any investment -- there's really no such thing as a completely objective discussion. People don't want to hear bad news about companies they invest in, and even the best-intentioned debates often end up in mudslinging. Likewise, it's important to remember that short sellers -- those who bet that the price of a stock will decline -- can profit by stirring up panic on a message board. People also can profit by stirring up excitement on the boards about stocks they own. All these things point to the importance of not relying on information you read on the boards. "You should assume everything you read online is false until you can confirm it somewhere else," said John Stark, chief of the SEC's Office of Internet Enforcement. "People know not to believe everything they read, but think that somehow the Internet makes things more legitimate, and it certainly does not." Here are some things to watch out for, and ignore, on the boards: Bashers. Just as stock promoters and other hypesters profit by pumping a stock, bashers, or those critical of a company, can profit by getting a stock's price to fall. Message-board participants who are positive on a stock are always quick to suggest that anyone who bashes the stock must be a short seller -- someone betting the stock's price will fall. Most of the time, that's just plain wrong. But the SEC says it is becoming more and more concerned that some people on the boards who appear to be critical observers are actually slamming a company so that they can profit from a short sale. It's irresponsible to dismiss anyone with a negative comment as a short seller, but it would also be a mistake to think that anyone bashing a stock is just trying to save you from a bad investment. Do your own research. Ric IP: Logged |

Since it's a sloooow day today, I though some might enjoy this interesting article I stumbled across this morning... Beware of the Basher! Whether you are fairly new to online investing or a seasoned veteran, you've probably seen the message boards and chat rooms that focus on stocks. Many of these boards make tabloids look tame, churning out rumor after rumor 24 hours a day. Some of the more popular boards are getting upwards of 10,000 posts daily. Here we look at how the practice of bashing takes place on these boards, and how you can handle bashers when you encounter them. The Advent of the Internet What Is a Basher? This practice may seem fairly simple, but there is a science behind it. Supposedly, reputable companies and investment firms sometimes hire bashers to help make the conditions for a takeover more favorable. You see, when one company wants to buy another, stock price is king. If the stock of a multi-billion dollar target company changes even by one dollar, the difference in the price of the takeover can be millions of dollars. A basher who successfully pushes down the price of a stock may receive a very lucrative compensation. How Bashers Get Paid Here are some basher tactics that online chatters should be aware of: Bashers lie! – Bashers have no ethical code that prevents them from lying. They will lie blatantly and often. Bashers usually bash stocks that are more volatile – Bashers usually only go after stocks that could show a large increase or decrease in price. There's a low probability that a basher would ever be able to influence a company with a huge float like General Electric, for example. Bashers will use any news – Bashers will not favor recent news over old news, or vice versa. They'll take information out of context if it will help depress a stock. Bashers exploit investors' lack of knowledge – Most bashers rely on the notion that most investors don't check their facts and, as such, will use false information to sway people. Bashers post frequently – Bashers are a persistent bunch. Through the use of repetition, they attempt to wear down those on the long side of stocks. Bashers can travel in packs – It is common for a group of bashers to enter a chat room quietly and carefully and feed off each other's posts to dominate subtly the sentiment of the room. Who Are Bashers' Prey? Anyone in a chat room who claims to be your friend and have your best interests in mind is likely a basher--after all, why would anyone give good advice for free in a chat room ? It's doubtful that experts such as Warren Buffett and Peter Lynch frequent these rooms. (Read more on Peter Lynch here.) Levels of Bashers' Skills The purpose is to get a reaction from other posters: the more reaction, the more the room will be disrupted. To throw yet another wrench into the works, bashers often send in another person to side with the longs of a stock. Again, the idea behind this is to distract people, and to spread rumors and confusion throughout the room. Not all bashers display such proficiency and dedication. Like any profession or sport, the bashing world has participants at different skill levels. It helps to know how the experts operate differently from the novices, so here is a list of the skills displayed in the different "leagues" (to use a baseball analogy) of bashers: Major League – The major league bashers are excellent at what they do. The better the bashers are at their game, the tougher they are to spot. They are online constantly, always attacking and attempting to make positive postings look unreasonable. Those in the major leagues are masters at manipulation, knowing how to convince other chatters that a particular stock should be sold immediately. AAA – These bashers are able to twist the meanings of words, phrases, quotes, and press releases quite compellingly; however, they do not have the same influence over others as those in the major leagues. AA - These bashers are still learning the subtleties of the art of appearing like a trustworthy, sophisticated fellow investor. For example, a AA basher may react overzealously to comments that question his or her perpetually bearish attitude. Bat Boy – Although this level of basher knows the profession and has known some major leaguers, he or she is utterly useless in the ways of bashing. The bat boy bashers make themselves obvious, using profanity, name calling and irrational arguments. These bashers are easily identified. How to Handle Bashers Do your due diligence. The phrase, "knowledge is power" is no more true than in this instance. Try to post a number of well-researched messages that confound the premise of a basher's arguments. Do not engage bashers directly, but instead post general and open-ended messages disputing bashers' posts. Remind those in the chat room that the mere fact that something is in writing does not make it the truth. Conclusion Cheers, Investopedia Staff IP: Logged |

1BigTip that reminded me of some info I meant to post for the board members. Off topic but an unoffical Public Service Announcement: I called my doctor about getting my flu shot--not available this year--have to be high risk--even though I attend to eldery relatives! If I do get the flu or a cold, I will enroll in GMED's trial programs. Their protocol works on viruses--sounds unbelieveable, but this even worked on the West Nile Virus. They can be found on their website. Hopefully, we will all be healthy and will not need their services, but should you need them--act fast. The sooner you start, the quicker you recover. Be back in a few hours. [This message has been edited by suzainiee (edited October 08, 2004).] IP: Logged |

Hey Suz...this morning all four of my boys received the flu shot...have two little ones under 2 and a half, and my 5 yr old has SEVERE allergies, which puts him at risk for EVERY germ known to man, and then the last, 7 yrs, was able to get it because of general risk. So, you might want to phone around about your flu shot. I know when I was caring for my dying mother, I was able to get the flu shot because I was at risk because she was in an Alzheimer's unit in the end (I was ALWAYS there with her)...this was 2 years ago when supply shortage also existed...just FYI...Call around and maybe you can find someone who will give you the shot....Because if you're caring for ailing relatives, you certainly need to be healthy! What I'm talking about is the morons on here who actually believe that there are companies that have employees sitting around bashing stocks all day and getting paid per reply or whatever. If you skim around the board, you'll find that just about every thread has someone making comments about this. One post in particular that I read last week in another thread had some people speculating on how much the basher gets paid per post. And no I don't think they're all being sarcastic about it. Regardless, the issue is that people actually attribute the sinking pps to a handful of idiots like U4. It's never the company's fault... -R IP: Logged |

These articles say short sellers can profit from the bashing of a stock. Well anyone here ever shorted a BB stock? Cause I sure can't. And I don't believe for a second that ppl are being paid to bash a stock to drive the price down so they can buy in at a cheap price. Thats just not true. I believe paid bashing goes on but deals with Nasdaq and NYSE stocks, since they can be shorted. Notice the articles posted here don't say BB stocks do they... ???? I don't think its "paid bashing" people here need to worry about..its "paid pumping" which for sure goes on with BB and pink stocks.. I was long on this stock until I have LOST 75% of my investing Capital. I can no longer endure the Damage PPs has done to my Portfolio. I am not bashing this stock or Frank I am telling the truth. I still like the chances in the future but only if We get everything that we need to be a successful NEWTWORK. Like I said I must bow-out for now. But I will be back after I can recooperate some of my LOSSES. With my LUCK this QBID will probably skyocket in price NOW. THAT I AM OUT. Good Luck everyone. Just for curiousity sake I AM Going to recoop my money in: ARES and ENUI. DarDaDog is in ENUI too. He is a very talented Stock Picker. Earth_Man IP: Logged |
