A new report finds the U.S. gay and lesbian consumer market is both diverse and economically significant, prompting a growing interest from the corporate world.

The fourth edition of "The U.S. Gay and Lesbian Market" report was released this week by the market research firm Packaged Facts and the LGBT-focused marketing firm Witeck-Combs Communications.

According to the report, buying power of the U.S. gay and lesbian population is projected to reach $610 billion in 2005.

Chance Mitchell, from the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, called the report's buying power projections "right on," and said companies are showing "an overwhelming interest."

"I think the (LGBT) consumer is going to start thinking about companies that are buying back from our community, not just marketing to our community," he said. Mitchell told the PlanetOut Network that IBM, Wells Fargo, Motorola, Intel, JPMorganChase, Cendant and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts are some of the companies that are taking steps to purchase goods and services from LGBT-owned businesses.

The report also revealed a high degree of diversity within the gay and lesbian population -- including singles, families, seniors and people of color.

At least 2 million gays are approaching or have already reached retirement age, according to the report. By 2020, some 5.7 million, or 25 percent of the gay community, will be 50 or older.

The report also estimates that there are 1.8 million gay and lesbian households with children, and there are approximately 2.6 million children living with gay parents.

The report examines Census data on same-sex households as well as research on single gay men and lesbians to conclude that race and ethnicity among the LGBT population appears to mirror the general U.S. population.

The complexity of the gay and lesbian population reveals that "day care and taxes and retirement accounts occupy as much a priority role as travel, fashion and home decor once did," according to Don Montuori, an editor for Packaged Facts.

"Gay households should never be over-simplified," said Bob Witeck, CEO of Witeck-Combs Communications. "Growing trends of acceptance and respect throughout society make it possible -- even essential -- for more gays and lesbians to safely self-identify and to vote not only with their ballots but also with their dollars in the market."

Maybe Q can sell the rights to ESPN in the future. Probably sounds crazy, but how many thought the X games were silly and now are on ESPN and ABC. Think about it.

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 1, 2004--Chicago organizers of Gay Games VII today announced a multi-million dollar cash and barter deal assigning television and radio broadcast rights to the Q Television network. Q Television Network and Chicago Games, Inc. (CGI) signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) marking the final negotiation period for an agreement transferring the media rights to the California-based cable network.

The LOI outlines the broad terms of the proposed deal, including broadcast rights, joint development of Gay Games-related programming, broadcast airtime for advanced Gay Games advertising, and live and taped coverage of Gay Games VII events from 15 to 22 July 2006. As part of the proposed agreement, Q Television, a subscriber-based television network affiliated with RCN Cable and other providers, will unscramble its signal during live coverage of the Gay Games in 2006. Q Television would also serve as the agent for the redistribution of television and radio broadcast rights, allowing for access beyond Q Television's cable footprint, especially in international markets. The media rights being sold would not prohibit standard news coverage.

"It has been my dream to get television created specifically for the LGBT audience on the air," said Frank Olsen, CEO and President of Q Television. "With the Gay Games as our landmark network event, we will begin immediately to present the stories of the men and women worldwide that participate in the Games and build anticipation and excitement until the opening ceremonies."

Steven Grunberg, Executive Vice-President of Programming for the Q Television Network, said "Q Television is all about 'community' and showing LGBT life at its best and most uplifting. We are honored to be chosen as the home for the Games and we will work hand-in-hand with Chicago's organizers to deliver one of the great LGBT events of the new millennium."

Chicago Outstripping Fundraising Projections

"In the six short months since Chicago was selected as host of Gay Games VII, we've made dramatic progress toward our financial goals and achieved fundraising benchmarks months, or in some cases, years ahead of schedule," said Tracy Baim, CGI Board Co-Vice Chair and Chair of the Fundraising Committee. "Once broadcast rights are assigned, we will have raised more than US$3 million in cash and in-kind resources."
