MTV to Launch Nation's First Gay TV Network

May 26--Cable programming powerhouse MTV Networks said it's launching the country's first gay network -- called LOGO -- and conservative groups are already vowing to erase it.

Following yesterday's big announcement of LOGO's launch, scheduled for Feb. 17 of next year, conservative groups promptly threatened to identify and boycott advertisers who buy time on the gay channel.

"We will have to put together a master plan that will pull together tens of millions of pro-family people," Traditional Values Coalition chairman Rev. Louis Sheldon told the Daily News.

Sheldon's group opposes gay marriage and has led earlier boycotts of companies like retail chain 7-Eleven for carrying racy magazines on its shelves.

Concerned Women for America -- which has boycotted Disney for its pro-gay policies -- said it would publicize LOGO advertisers. "They should not promote homosexuality," said Robert Knight, a leader of the right-leaning group.

Knight added that the net's launch offers "a powerful new argument" to groups fighting on Capitol Hill to give consumers the right to choose what cable nets they want.

For now, though, MTV Networks chairman Tom Freston is shrugging off any protests from conservative groups, though MTV's parent company Viacom, is being trashed for backing shock jock Howard Stern.

"We don't anticipate a huge backlash," Freston told reporters yesterday on a conference call.

"This isn't going to have sex and sexuality," Freston added, explaining that LOGO would meet the standards of any basic cable channel.

MTV Networks, the red-hot cable programming giant whose other nets include MTV, VH1, and Nickelodeon, sees mega-bucks in the big-spending gay population, which it claims is now underserved on the TV screen.

Freston's boss, Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone, has told investors the net would cost $30 million to launch -- but could be worth $1 billion.

LOGO, which will likely be carried by cable systems on their higher-priced digital tier, is expected to be carried in 10 million to 14 million homes by the end of next year and turn a profit within three years, execs said yesterday.

Talks are under way with a range of cable systems. Time Warner Cable has already agreed to carry it in New York.

And advertisers like online travel agency Orbitz, which aggressively targets gay customers and was one of the early advertisers on Bravo hit "Queer Eye," have already signed on.

MTV execs declined to be specific about programming yesterday but said the network would appeal to a wide range of gay and lesbian viewers with entertainment, news, talk shows, and movies like "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" and "Gods and Monsters."

LOGO will also partner with Viacom's other units, like CBS News, and VH1 to create programming, execs said.

Get real, I don't care about any conspiracy, I care about Qbid and the impact that statements like this have on this stock. This can tank this stock just as quickly as anything else. Awareness is the key to making good decisions on stock. If someone is misrepresenting a stock and their relationship with the CEO of a corp, in a public forum, this can damage a stock as easily as any negative info can. Again the problem becomes CREDIBILITY. Diana at this point has a problem with that, and by association, re: her relationship with Frank, now qbid has the same problem.

This is why I have been cautioning Watch What You Say and How You Say It.

I have a vested interest in Qbid. Frank Olson is the CEO and the one who says who, what, when, and where, anything that regards qbid happens. Not Diana. I do not want Qbid to have problems because of wrong information.

And no I don't think there is a conspiracy going.

So again I say, If you can refute the evidence presented, do so, other wise leave the childish comments alone. I am truly sorry that you do not agree or are not wanting to see, but you see, that is not my problem. I can give you the information on what is going on, and the possible impact it can have on Qbid, it is up to you if you want to use it or not. I am not bashing, just concerned that others will see what I am seeing and make the very wrong connections and effectively stop Qbid in its tracks.

This Dragon guy makes a lot of sense to ma. he is showing concern for the company and i admire him for that. You don't have to accept his explanation of what has happened and you can turn a blind eye to what has happened but i cant. this is concerning me to no end and at this point in the game we don't need any loose cannons.

I don't know what is actually happening as we have 2 different stories from Dianne at this point. What i do see is that she is there at Q and she is throwing around dates that have not been released and now she has deleted her threads. something is being covers up and it does not look good.

You see how fast this can get out of hand.
the above is how quickly this can happen and opens everything up for insider trading.

Again, think it through before you post, at this point it would be easy for misinterpatation to happen and people to start screaming insider trading.

NO I DON'T THINK THIS IS HAPPENING, AT ALL. But this thread gets over 1 million hits a day, and nowhere near that many posts. So there are a lot of lurkers out there that read it. Think before you blindly post or just react to a post.

However, remember, Frank runs Qbid, we do not, we cannot issue PR, we cannot issue statements on the company beyond what is public knowledge or contained in Pr releases from the company, and as long as Frank pays the bills for the Q then he has the say on what happens with this company. We do not have that power.

By the same token, I am sure he appreciates the efforts of all who are actively promoting his network, using the available public information, to the various news media, and cable operators.

I'm here, reading post. Just a little confused and somewhat disappointed. Too much so to say very much right now. Thank God we live in a country that says we're innocent until proven guilty. I haven't even mentioned advertisers yet! We will see more revenue from advertising than we see from subscriptions.
