I found out last night that Andrew Jacksons reelection campaign was the origination of the jackass symbol for the democrats, because thats what the other party called him then. There was no republican party as yet. The other party was the wigs.

I sleep well, sir. One reason I don't trade in the true pennies anymore is because of the lack of predictability in their short-term performance. However, I have no qualms about speculating on a play that seems like it has good potential short-term upside. That's how the game works. There's little difference between speculating in the pennies, and playing poker. In the words of the "great" Kenny Rogers:

You have to know when to hold 'em/
Know when to fold 'em/
Know when to walk away/
And know when to run/
You never count your money/
When you're sitting at the table/
There'll be time enough for countin'/
When the dealing's done.

I abide by some simple rules when trading the exchange-traded pennies:

(1) Only buy stocks you have a certain degree of certainty are preparing for a short-term run. I'm wrong once in awhile, but I'm right more often than not. I have several indicators I use to achieve this level of certainty.

(2) Get out before the top. Sell why the run is happening. Trying to gauge the top of a run will cost you more money than it will make you.

(3) Set a certain price-point (mine is between 3% and 7%, depending upon the stock), where you will cut your losses. In the long run, a good trader will make almost as much money from limiting his losses as he does from the stocks he's right on. I've seen far too many traders give back all or most of their gains by becoming emotionally attached to a stock, and trying to ride it back up to break-even. That almost never works, and even when it does, the capital involved could have probably been used far more effectively in other, faster-moving stocks.

(4) Never buy and hold ANY OTCBB, Pink, or Grey stock. While you'll occasionally run across a company that has real potential on these off-the-beaten-path locations, 99% of the stocks are either weak companies, or out and out scams. Is there money to be made "trading paper" as it were on these stocks? Sure. Is there any legitiamte reason to approach these stocks as buy-and-hold opportunities? No.

THESE are the real rules of winners!

 -

1. Buy low, sell high (or for you unsavory characters, sell short high, buy low!)
2. Hogs get fat, pigs get slaughtered. (In other words, don't get greedy!)
3. Buy on the rumor, sell on the news (usually true for stocks the runup into news vs. stocks that run AFTER news).
4. It takes money to make money. (In other words, don't expect to turn $100 into $50K)
5. You win some, you lose some, but you keep on fighting! (In other words, never lose your capital or it's game over)
6. Never fall in love with a stock.
7. The only sure bets in this life are death and taxes.
8. If an analyst rates a stock a "buy", you can be sure he has already bought the stock and is looking to unload at a price just below his target stock. Vice versa on "sell" recommendations.
9. Like surfing, ride the MM's and follow them, and you will sail to victory. Attempt to go against them, and you will wipeout. Remember, MM's do NOT play by the same rules on investors and do NOT lose money ever on Market Making activity. Therefore, you cannot beat them.
10. You don't have to be in the game 100% of the time. The sidelines are nice for a break every once in a while. Remember, its better to NOT make money than to LOSE money.
11. There are no such things as PAID bashers. That dumb article floating around "Confessions of a basher" is BS. People bash because they are short, bored, a-holes, or looking for a better reentry price.
12. As a follow up on 12, even if there were paid bashers, 99% of the time, Bulletin Board postings do NOT influence price fluctutations. There are many more investors who invest without ever reading internet message boards.
13. Always keep dry powder on hand. Never know when an opportunity may arise.
14. Most mutual funds and institutions will not buy stocks unless they are NASDAQ or listed and over $5.. However, this does not apply to hedge funds.
15. Don't go "all-in". This is not the World Series of Poker. Don't invest all of your capital in one stock. If you have a favorite, put 1/3 in. Keep the other 2/3 just in case you need to average down.
16. There's no such thing as "fat finger" trades. When these trades do occur, they are not valid and are broken by the brokerage houses within 3 days. Nobody can filled outside of the inside market (best bid x ask)
17. If you want a sure way of exiting a stock without hitting the bid, split the inside market with decimals. This will prevent your order from being represented on Level II, and the MM's won't step in front of your order (which they do often to get you to keep lowering your sell price). For example, if the best bid x ask is .11 x .12, try putting in .111 or somthing like that.
18. If you plan to play with fire (ie., play the pinks), make sure you have access to your trading platform at all times! Do not buy a stock without having access to exit in short notic

kevin i equate the runs to fireworks - get out before the bang! good strategy. minimize risk by holding for the shortest period possible - not overnight or over the weekends if possible. have an exit point picked and exit. and don't get greedy.

repo - good point except people should have to say why they rated you also. who and why should be part of the ratings if we have them.

President Harris killed himself during his inauguration speech by dressing lightly on a cold march day and giving the longest inaugural speech in history, of 2 hours. He caught a cold and lead to pneumonia, he died shortly after. He wanted to prove to the public that he was a physically fit president at the age of 67.

Nymex to Launch Side-By-Side Electronic Trading of Asian, London Metals

NEW YORK (AP) -- The newly public New York Mercantile Exchange said Tuesday it plans to open up more of its products to side-by-side electronic trading starting in December.
The commodities exchange -- which debuted as Nymex Holdings Inc. in an initial public offering on Friday -- said it plans to offer Comex miNYs, Asian metals and London metals futures contracts through the Chicago Mercantile Exchange's Globex electronic trading platform beginning Dec. 3. Electronic trading will run 24 hours a day.

Nymex energy contracts have been trading around the clock through the Globex electronic trading platform since September.

Financial marketplaces have been moving to take more of their trading electronic, including the New York Stock Exchange.

Nymex -- famous for its open outcry trading floor where energy and metals futures change hands -- struck a deal in April in which the Chicago Merc became the exclusive electronic trader of energy futures and options. The contract that runs through 2016.
