To Watch These Programs on Cable, You Have to Find Them First

atching a gearhead assemble a motorcycle in 13 one-hour installments might not be most people's idea of riveting television, but to Keith Dressel it is a programming niche that is begging to be exploited.

In the increasingly cluttered world of cable television, Mr. Dressel is convinced that there is still plenty of space for his fledgling network, AMP TV. Under the banner "Life Fully Charged," his network is aiming at 18- to 34-year-old men who like hard-driving music, muscle cars and extreme sports. A kind of MTV-meets-Speedvision-meets-ESPN2, his publicist says.

"There's nothing out there that fashions this stuff in this way," said Mr. Dressel, a former music company executive who likes fast boats, body surfing and riding horses "as fast as they'll go." Mr. Dressel is aiming for that sweet spot of young male viewers, a market that advertisers prize. A few years ago, cable operators would have fallen over themselves to sign AMP TV. But the prime analog channels on cable are long gone, and Mr. Dressel is negotiating to get on cable's digital band, which has been considered less desirable because viewers have to pay extra for access to digital channels.

While Mr. Dressel is confident he can land a digital channel, other new networks may not be so lucky. Instead, they are being cajoled, or pushed, by cable companies to place their programs exclusively onto cable's new frontier - video on demand. Like digital channels, video on demand is available only to digital subscribers, but viewers cannot surf past these networks: they have to seek them out.

"With video on demand, you can put niche programming on air that might not otherwise be available," said Matt Bond, the executive vice president for programming at the Comcast Corporation, the nation's largest cable operator. "There are literally hundreds of programmers out there, like the proliferation of Web sites. There might not be enough content to support a 24-hour-a-day channel, but these programs could exist on V.O.D."

Comcast has three networks on its video-on-demand roster that are shown exclusively in that format: a wellness channel called Wisdom TV and two networks, the Anime Network for Japanese-style cartoons and Atom TV for short films.

Other niche networks that appeal to, say, martial arts athletes, boxing buffs and wine lovers could face the same fate: placement in the on-demand space, where they will have to attract viewers without having a designated channel number.

"Their concerns about 'no one will find us' are well founded," said Stephen Hasker, an analyst at McKinsey & Company. For viewers to seek out on-demand channels, he added, "there is a mind shift that is required."

Cable companies have become a lot more selective about adding networks because of the increasing demands on their cable bandwidth. In addition to the Internet access and telephone services they sell, cable systems are already stocked with scores of little-watched networks and a growing number of high-definition digital programs that use several times as much data transmission capacity as analog programs.

Putting programs from new networks into an on-demand format frees up valuable bandwidth and helps cable operators distinguish themselves from their rivals, the satellite providers, which have fewer on-demand options because they have limited capacity for the two-way communication that is required. The strategy also lets operators add programming that might attract small audiences.

Like pay-per-view movies in hotels, programs from these networks are stored on databases and sent to viewers on request. In most cases, viewers go to a central on-demand channel, where they can choose from a slate of movies, free programs and subscription-only services, like HBO. Only a fraction of a network's programs can be seen at any given time, but the lineups are refreshed every week or month.

For a new network trying to get noticed, agreeing to be shown only in an on-demand format is a leap of faith. Most viewers, unaccustomed to hunting for programs in the on-demand world, may not know the networks exist because the programs often are not publicized in TV Guide magazine or newspapers.

they appear to be selling as many shares as they can for as mutch as possible! ( dilution ), buying at or near the ask is a misteak, this is going down alot! IMO. ask just dropped to .003. B/A now .0025 X .003, going to hit .001 X .002/25 today. again JMO>
