Cable delays local launch of new lgbt network, LOGO By Brad Smith
“I want my Gay TV!” That’s what Viacom MTV Networks would like us to say about its new channel, LOGO. LOGO debuted in about 10 million homes in parts of the United States at the end of June. Time Warner Cable added LOGO to its digital lineup in other cities, but so far, refuses to do that in Rochester.
“The company is in negotiations to carry LOGO in Rochester and our other markets, says Time Warner Rochester spokesperson Brian Wirth. “We may have an announcement by the end of the year or early in 2006.” Wirth adds that Time Warner may also add the premium gay channel Here! (about $10 per month) and Q television , a pay per view service (pricing similar to mainstream movie services) available in a few big cities. Here! and Q could gain more viewers and eventually benefit from LOGO’s addition to cable systems around the country .
Money is delaying the rollout. Both sides need to agree on how much MTV should pay Time Warner (if anything) to add LOGO in more than two dozen cities. As an example, Viacom might insist that cable companies carry LOGO if they want to continue to offer Viacom channels such as MTV, VH1, CMT and as many as 10 others.
The delay may help Time Warner avoid confrontations with conservatives who oppose anything gay. Organizations affiliated with the hate group Focus on the Family have launched campaigns to pressure cable companies to refuse the channel. Time Warner in Rochester won’t confirm that, blaming the delay on corporate negotiations that are “out of local control.”
Should negotiations result in the addition of LOGO to the local cable lineup at the end of the year (six months after its launch), customers may find the announcement in the end of the year mailing that details the annual cable price hike. Cable is a business with at least three revenue streams, but the money doesn’t go as far as it used to: channels pay to be carried, customers pay for the service, and cable also makes money selling advertisements.
Even in a 500-channel universe, a spot on the dial is not cheap. For example, Time Warner and the owners of WUHF-TV 31 Fox Rochester couldn’t agree on the charge to add the high definition (HD) Fox signal to the cable lineup, frustrating cable customers who invested in expensive TV sets to watch American Idol in HD. Some stations dare to suggest that cable should pay them for what can be expensive local broadcasting efforts.
What is LOGO? LOGO is a 24/7 digital cable channel whose president is Brian Graden, a gay man in his 40s from the Illinois countryside who attended Oral Roberts University. He gave us shows such as South Park, The Week That Was, I Love the 80s, Jackass and Punk’d.
Don’t expect to see such extreme programming on LOGO. LOGO bills itself as a mix of original and acquired entertainment that is smart, inclusive and authentic. LOGO features a library of 200 major film titles, documentaries and news coverage, plus original series and specials. It’s not just for men or just for women. Future issues of The Empty Closet will add more details on programming if the service is added.
Viacom promised that LOGO would be on the air two years ago (then called Outlet). America, which had no LGBTQ niche channels, now has several. Advertisers want to reach the biggest groups of consumers as cheaply as possible, and to them, the gay market is more attractive. Won’t the rest of America be surprised to see commercials on gay TV are as mundane – or the same - as the ones they are used to seeing?
As the major networks sanitize their lineups, LOGO and the other new channels may offer the opportunity to come home, flop on the couch and find someone on TV to identify with.

Hey guys and gals with all this talk about Time Warner we seem to have forgotten about Verizon. Go to page 5 on the link and check out Verizon's approach to Video Markets. It seems they know that theres enough money and viewing audience in the Gay/Lesbian community that it should be put on the national scale.

Yes I believe that the "Q" is the company in question. Richard has made several references to the studio in Burbank over the past couple of weeks Of course JMHO again. Lets try to get Richard to confirm or deny.

The REAL answer here is: YOU CANNOT GET A PERSONS IP FROM ANOTHER HOSTED WEBSITE UNLESS THE PERSON HITS YOUR SERVER SO YOU CAN RETRIEVE IT, or, you're attemting to embed an IMG tag, or you have access to there server logs. Then you further want to install an applet. "It's really a cool little applet". That is executing a program on a persons computer....you could do anything that a java applet's security allows you to...Clear enough for 'ya.....now.....just to be REALLY clear about who I am and what I do....I've worked on Internet2...I train PC Techs, field techs and network engineers....I design pops, nocs and large NAPS....Do you even know what GEAC is? Can this be ended? Or are you on some kinda' HIGH pretending to be a really knowledgable IT guy/gal/person? If your nice to me, I may even give you some pointers....now....how is Q going to do tomorrow g-invest? Let's get back on topic here....

Not only do I have the technicals figured out, I also know the psychologicals. You think using GRAVITO as a way of naming me helps you exert power over me, like you feel that I'm *hiding* behind the name, despite the fact that I proudly use it in my name, g-invest.
Additionally, you have a fixxation with ratings, which I can only imagine comes from less than 2 years experience with computers and forums. Indeed, this might be one of the first forums with a rating system you've ever participated on. You're doing all the classic newbie mistakes, like pining for stars by announcing whenever you rate someone 5 stars and overusing emoticons (which you say you aren't loading, hah).
Your posts also fit the typical one to two-line responses that almost always indicate someone wanting to run their post count up.
No offense, but that's kind of sad. Especially for a pumper who probably already sold out of his position in this stock and will disappear tomorrow.

He actually does at times post well-though posisiotns and ideas. But unfortunaely there are some people in thie world for whom the idea of winning an argument overshadows the underlying issue itself. It's an ego thinkg. I have met people like that in my lifetime, and while intelligent to be sure, they tend to be people you would really rather stay on the other side of the room from in a party.
So this boasting of power with the IP thing -- totally true you can get someone's IP from linking a picture here to your server and then checking your logs. I just wanted to show that they guy was spouting off about something totally innocuous.
Notice he didn't even bother to respond to me when I made a bona fide offer to toss him up to $750 in cash.
Seems as though there is a nice guy and a wanker inside him fighting for attentaion. I am trying to extracate the wanker side of him by publicy issuing a challenge he cannot win and his ego cannot accept.
This is an argument he can't win, so he will either ignore it or explain it away and move on to soemthing else. I am just hoping it makes an impression that he should try to dicuss issues without the deity complex.
But, it's not midnight yet, so he still has until then to prove his skills and make up to $750.
Unlike his claims, mine are geniune. He would have a money order waiting for him at a Western Union office in his town by Saturday noon.
I know this is off-topic, but I am hoping that by injecting a little reality into his statements, we can calm things down on other, more on-topic fronts, as well. I don't want the thread to become pur pumper -- but the mood here is so nice it has become one of my two favorite threads.
