Queer Lounge 2005 Achieves Unprecedented Success Queer Lounge diverse parties, programming and concerts draw a stellar crowd 02.03.05
(West Hollywood, CA) - Queer Lounge's return to Park City, Utah to support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) films and filmmakers during Sundance and other surrounding festivals was more successful than ever.
Thousands of festival-goers took advantage of the networking hub’s open-environment to mingle at the unprecedented 12 parties, 8 panels and 5 concerts held by the Lounge during its 9 days of operation. The diversity of events hosted by the venue provided a common ground for visiting film fans and locals—both gay and straight.
“We have something for everyone. What's great about the Lounge is it goes from an informational environment and then at night, it transforms into a helluva party place”, explains executive director, Ellen Huang. “being a fun place is a way to bring people together."
The hub expanded its line-up of events this year to include a music series and after-parties that featured the bands Cake and Scissor Sisters.
Queer Lounge was the venue that hosted celebrity photographer David LaChapelle's "Rize" party with A-list guests Alan Cummings, Jared Leto, Pamela Anderson, Naomi Watts, Paris and Nicky Hilton, Stephen Dorf, Jessica Simpson, Tom Arnold, Taryn Manning and Jenny McCarthy. Other Queer Lounge parties saw visitors such as Carmen Electra, Steve Buscemi, Thora Birch and Neve Campbell.
Kicking off with a TLA Releasing party, Queer Lounge then hosted its Official Opening party sponsored by Absolut Vodka, here!, PlanetOut and the Advocate and featuring Warner recording artists, The Ditty Bops. Queer Lounge diverse nighttime parties included a performance by erotic punk rock group Jinx Titanic to PBS' party for Sundance documentary The Education of Shelby Knox and to wrap up the week, Queer Lounge hosted the infamous Homos Away From Home party with guests singing "Happy Birthday" to Alan Cummings and John Cameron Mitchell spinning music until 3am.
"The Queer Lounge is the most fun space at the Festival. It's old-school Sundance: the relaxed, welcoming, guest list-free Sundance that I remember from the early days,” expresses Queer Lounge regular John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch). "I love the Queer Lounge!"
In addition, Queer Lounge held several discussion panels on films showcased in surrounding festivals. Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato sat down with the Queer Lounge to discuss the ground-breaking Sundance documentary Inside Deep Throat, director Don Roos came by for a conversation about his film Happy Endings that opened the Sundance Film Festival, writer/director Craig Lucas discussed the political undertones of his film The Dying Gaul (Sundance Dramatic Competition), and first-time feature filmmaker Alice Wu, along with Joan Chen and other cast members of Saving Face (Sundance’s American Spectrum) discussed the personal inspirations behind the film.
here! covered all events by the Queer Lounge, interviewed LGBT filmmakers supported by the Lounge. Q Television Network based in Palm Springs utilized the Lounge for interviews and created a studio to accommodate its live shows. Both networks, along with a representative of France's Pink TV, participated in a panel exploring the rise and future of gay networks.
A bit of history: Queer Lounge is the first film-festival hospitality space devoted to queer films. It is an independent project not associated with Sundance, Slamdance and other films festivals that comprise the Park City “dance” festival frenzy. Last year, its inaugural year, over 4,000 people visited the hub to relax, attend panel discussions or celebrate at one of parties held at the venue, including a Showtime party for the premiere of The L Word, a party for Sundance entry, Harry and Max, and a revival of the legendary Homos Away From Home party co-hosted by John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch).
