If this is going to halt, and its going to halt quickly post 10k, and 10k is going to be out today, then what is there to gain by trading today? Who's interest would that serve? What are the chance we don't open today?

The 1.3 days doesn't represent how many days they HAVE to cover. That represents the the number of days, based on average volume, that it would take the shorts to cover once they did.... it's not a trigger or anything.
