But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.
-- Luke 6:24

Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
-- James 5:1

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Didn't it start with a discussion of "Global Warning", which was caused by martians invading, due to the occupation of the Oreos from a distant galaxy, whom evolved to a higher plane of existence, after the ancients stole their cookies?....or am I missing something??? LOL....

It's a good thing those pools were empty...especially if your oreos were unattended....then again, if you were accompanied by a peachy schnapps or two, you'd be good to go....LOL....

Tex...sounds like you had some good times!

Aragorn,

Do you believe that man-made chemicals (chiefly Chlorofluorocarbons) are responsible for the hole in the ozone layer?

Bigfoot,

Not totally but they do contribute. Atmospheric chemicals can be measured and have been. Trace chemicals known to be produced only by man have been found in the ozone areas.

I am glad you can see that(at least partially). If any other's do NOT believe that man made chemicals are to blame I would like to quote the United States EPA (you can find this information at www. epa.gov/ozone/science/q_a.html#q5)

quote:
How does ozone depletion occur?

It is caused by the release of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other ozone-depleting substances (ODS), which were used widely as refrigerants, insulating foams, and solvents. The discussion below focuses on CFCs, but is relevant to all ODS. Although CFCs are heavier than air, they are eventually carried into the stratosphere in a process that can take as long as 2 to 5 years. Measurements of CFCs in the stratosphere are made from balloons, aircraft, and satellites.

When CFCs reach the stratosphere, the ultraviolet radiation from the sun causes them to break apart and release chlorine atoms which react with ozone, starting chemical cycles of ozone destruction that deplete the ozone layer. One chlorine atom can break apart more than 100,000 ozone molecules.

Other chemicals that damage the ozone layer include methyl bromide (used as a pesticide), halons (used in fire extinguishers), and methyl chloroform (used as a solvent in industrial processes for essential applications). As methyl bromide and halons are broken apart, they release bromine atoms, which are 40 times more destructive to ozone molecules than chlorine atoms.

How do we know that natural sources are not responsible for ozone depletion?

While it is true that volcanoes and oceans release large amounts of chlorine, the chlorine from these sources is easily dissolved in water and washes out of the atmosphere in rain. In contrast, CFCs are not broken down in the lower atmosphere and do not dissolve in water. The chlorine in these human-made molecules does reach the stratosphere. Measurements show that the increase in stratospheric chlorine since 1985 matches the amount released from CFCs and other ozone-depleting substances produced and released by human activities.

If this is true does it not seem logical that we can find similar corrilations between human activities and other forms of environmental disruption?

Aragorn,

You are right that the earth goes through cycles of temperatures and atmospheric compositions. However, I do not believe that is the only reason for our warming weather and many others agree.

Consider your own thought about how plants are capable of creating oxygen out of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide.

Rainforests (which are home to nearly half of all plant and animal species in the world) are in serious decline. I would like to quote for you from the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research. (www. aceer .org)

quote:
How Much Rainforest Remains?

Tropical rainforest is disappearing faster than any other natural community on Earth. If we continue at our current rate of destruction, with population being the dominant factor, 70% of our remaining rainforests will by gone by the year 2050! Ancient forests, some of which have existed intact for seventy million years, since the days of the dinosaurs, will all but vanish.

How Is The Rainforest Being Destroyed?

A few thousand years ago, rainforests covered 14% of the earth’s land surface—5 billion acres. We have already destroyed a great deal of that. According to the United States National Academy of Sciences, more than 50 million acres of rainforest, an area the size of England, Scotland, and Wales, are destroyed or seriously degraded each year. Every day about 90 acres of rainforest land is deforested, creating infertile soil marked, ironically, for farming; for the creation of short-lived dams; for the mining of mineral resources; for cattle ranching to provide a cheaper fast-food hamburger for developed countries; for the importing of hardwood; and, most importantly, for the use of wood as fuel for cooking. The rainforest becomes a third-world commodity destined for transformation into paper bags, cardboard boxes, and hardwood floors. Whether for land or timber, deforestation of the world’s tropical rainforest has an appalling history of short-term benefits in exchange for irreversible loss.

It does not say it here but the commonly excepted percentage of rainforests that currently cover the earth is 6%. That is a LOT of human caused degradation. And with these nitrogen fixing, carbon dioxide breathing ecosystems no longer in place, the amount of nitrogen and carbon dioxide that is released into the atmosphere becomes more and more important. As we lose the natural systems that were in place to counterbalance those gases the effect those gasses have on our atmosphere becomes more pronounced.

I have been to the rainforests and seen the social systems of 2nd and 3rd world countries that push the poverty struck to the edge of the forest as squatters. I have seen them try to make a living by cutting down this precious resource. And I have seen the cattle barren come in and take their newly cleared lands giving them the choice of fleeing farther into the forest or of simply disappearing.

I have snorkled among coral reefs and seen the stark and fragile difference between a healthy living thriving reef and a blanched reef that is struggling to breath and has no resources left to support other life. It is scary.

This is a global problem that isn't going to go away and it is foolish to point at our friends and neighbors and say "Why should I do anything when they aren't?"

We are all capitalists on this board and we all know that, when you know something is right, waiting for someone else to do it first doesn't get you anywhere.

We are the first among equals here in the United States. It is our role to lead, not follow.

Sorry for the extremely long post. I will try to keep myself to shorter ones in the future.

Thanks for letting me rant a little.

The Bigfoot,

I would like to believe that your efforts to provide Aragorn with factual and accepted conclusion of the scientific community will have the results it would with reasonably intellegent people that are open minded. But I must warn you, essentially the exact same information (and much more) has already been provided for him here (since he never has posted at Allstocks except in "Off Topics", one wonders why he is here) and the results were a spew of hateful rightwing religious uttering and name calling. He seems to believe that stuff provided him by the evangelical far right cannot be questioned and if you do so, you are subject to being labeled all manner of things, only beginning with being labeled a non-Christian (whether it is true or not).

He'll claim that he has equally and better qualified "scientist" (don't be surprised to find his experts working for the "National Enquirer"....he seems to believe in space invades and little green men too) that have proved everything he and the evangellicals and the Republican party foster. His own background in and with science (them that can do, them that can't teach, and them that can't do or teach show up and harrass real ones on the internet) is suspect at best and his loose excuse for logic is really childish.

I wish you luck, but expect you to have a bad experience just like so many others.
