T.D. Ernesto dumping heavy rains

10:47 a.m. ET 9/1/06
Meteorologist, The Weather Channel

Severe Weather Outlook Hurricane Tracker: Ernesto
Ernesto made landfall last night at 11:30 p.m. near Long Beach, North Carolina. Wind gusts of 55 to 65 mph were common over parts of the Carolinas, with some areas reporting winds over 70 mph. There were also numerous reports of flash flooding, with some areas measuring between 8 and 12 inches of rain.

Ernesto is heading into southeast Virginia. Morning rainfall rates in the Tidewater region have been as high as 1 to 2 inches per hour and northeast winds at Langley gusted as high as 62 mph. With the system now over land, weakening will continue today. Moderate to heavy rain extends from northeast North Carolina to the Maryland-Pennsylvania line and will continue its march northward through the Middle Atlantic and New York tonight and Saturday. Rainfall amounts on the order of 3 to 8 inches with isolated higher amounts will result in flash flooding and even possible river flooding as we head into the weekend. Flood watches are in effect for portions of the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast.

In addition to the rain, the low pressure center that is T.D. Ernesto along with building high pressure in eastern Canada will create a tight pressure gradient resulting in strong easterly winds (generally 20 to 40 mph) along the beaches during this holiday weekend. Although tropical storm advisories have been dropped, gale warnings have been posted up and down the New England and Mid-Atlantic coasts. This strong onshore flow will also create a high risk for rip currents.

Meanwhile, in the eastern Pacific, Hurricane John has intensified back to a category three hurricane with winds now of 115 mph. John is moving away from the coast of mainland Mexico, but closer to the southern tip of the southern Baja Peninsula. John is forecast to track very close to this area, bringing heavy rain, high wind, and high waves later today (Eastern Time). Some further strengthening is possible, but once the system passes west of the Baja Peninsula, cooler waters and more stable conditions will result in a slow weakening.

Also, nearby Kristy has been downgraded to a tropical storm with winds of 70 mph. Kristy has pulled in dry air, and will actually be influenced by the outflow from hurricane John in the coming days. This will result in a general weakening of the system.

Finally, in the western Pacific, category four Typhoon Ioke continues to move away from Wake Island. There have not yet been any reports of what impact Ioke had when it passed Wake Island, but it likely produced significant damage. Ioke has been a powerful cyclone for the past 7 days and if it is able to maintain such a level of intensity through the end of the day today (Eastern Time), it will make history for its intensity for such a long period.

Time to buy PHBT--.0001. Can't get better than that. Historically, this thing runs hard in September. Keep an eye on it...I'll be buying this AM.
