I'd love a retrace myself... sold last week at .05 due to higher than expected car (EDIT: removed extra 'a' from 'cara') inspection requirements Anyone know if I can sue the state for lost profits? LOL

True, but the buyer is not paying double they are only paying a small fraction. I realize it does affect their odds though. But generally they are hoping for a long shot either way.

Any long term prizewize buyers WILL pay double (or whatever %age everything is overpriced by) in the long run for whatever they win. In any case, this is for those who want to gamble, because the odds or not on the buyers' side.

thats why its a sweepstakes, actually 175% of value is pretty good odds. when the local shriners raffle off a car or something you can bet they are making over 500% of value.

I understand how this works. I'm sure there will be enough willing people to pay $1 for a chance to win something worth a lot more. Just not me.

also most state lotteries pay prizes 45-60% of revenue generated
lol, i like raffles and sweepstakes, ive been in publisher clearing house sweepstakes for years and im still waiting for them to come to knock on my door with that big check. I will probably look a mess and half asleep or drunk like all the other winners ive seen on tv lol

The fact that lotteries (for the most part, until the size of the jackpot actually outgrows your odds against winning it, at which point it becomes a good bet) and other sweepstakes are a bad bet doesn't make purchasing prizewize tickets a good bet.
Free sweepstakes are an exception because it doesn't cost you anything to have a chance to win.

Some of you bring up a very interesting point. What are the tax ramifications of winning something big? Let's say you win a house for a dollar. Is that it? How do Federal and State taxes come into play? Anyone?

Tgrant - I KNOW how you feel. I tried to swing ONEV last week and lost. Sold when I thought it was going down (with the thought I would buy lower) and BAM - the alarm goes off all over the world "Breezer has sold! NOW is the time to BUY!!!"
Thanks for being willing to let us know up front about when you are selling. LOL Appreciate your sense of humor.

You bet they do!... Uncle Sam will be looking for you. You can be sure of that... it's just like winning the lottery, you're responsible for the taxes on the "income" you received.

That could be a big nut, or pickle as it were, to swallow. Win a 300,000 house for a buck and guess what? You owe every taxing authority in the land a load of green. Any idea if its based on the actual value of the "prize" or is it based on the price the seller received from his/her listing?

Well, you'll try to claim it on the purchase price of $1, but you'll be sharing a jail cell with your new husband Bubba.... You actually pay it on the fair market value of the house (or whatever the prize is)... However, can you imagine a bank that would not give you a mortgage for only 30% of the value of the house? (or whatever tax bracket you fall into). Posts: 1885 | From: Tampa, FL, US | Registered: Mar 2004

I'll have to talk to the accountant after I win the house, Porsche or maybe even that Harley FatBoy. Hmmmm, Bubba might like the FatBoy!
