Oh well, I guess we'll have to wait until tomorrow for some nice gains. We held pretty steady today which is comforting. Tomorrow's the big day, after the market closes, for the viewing. The end of day run should be the best one we've seen yet!!

Read a couple pages back about the battery problem with the Stratellite and it appears there is some new, promising battery tech coming. Do a search for Altair Nanotechnologies for more info.

It seems various technolgies are finally coming together to make this thing work, and it can get better from here.

Finally....NATIONAL PRESS COVERAGE

Company to unveil prototype airship for communications relay

By John Antczak
ASSOCIATED PRESS
3:14 p.m. April 11, 2005

LOS ANGELES – A communications company this week will unveil a prototype of an unmanned airship that would function as a relay platform while floating in the stratosphere some 65,000 feet above service areas.

The lighter-than-air "stratellite" has been under construction by the GlobeTel Communications Corp. subsidiary Sanswire Networks LLC at an airport in San Bernardino County.

The company hopes to begin flight testing of its Sanswire One later this year over the California desert and is in discussions with NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base.

The prototype is 188 feet long, 42 feet high and 60 feet wide – about a third the size of the operational airships being planned, said Leigh Coleman, president of Pembroke Pines, Fla.-based GlobeTel.

By comparison, the Carson, Calif.-based Goodyear blimp Spirit of America is 192 feet long, 50 feet wide and 59½ feet high.

Sanswire One, however, resembles a shark or whale, with a broad tapered nose rather than the cylindrical shape of a traditional blimp. It also has a rigid structure, like the Zeppelins of the early 20th century, but is very lightweight.

"It's a rebirth of an era in our minds," Coleman said. "... We see it as a link to the past."

The developers hope to fly it to an altitude of 45,000 feet in July, but first must deal with regulatory and flight safety issues, Coleman said.

"The actual airship is functional but it does need approvals, it needs certification," he said.

The developers planned to show off the airship during a press conference Tuesday.

GlobeTel foresees a fleet of helium-filled "stratellites," each able to stay aloft for months at a time and automatically held on station by electric motors powered by batteries charged by solar cells.

They would relay communications services including voice, broadband, high-definition TV, interactive high-definition TV and satellite radio at a cost far lower than traditional satellites in orbit, the company contends, and could also have military and government uses for surveillance and remote sensing.

"When we prove what we can do the military will use this immediately," Coleman said.

By positioning "stratellites" at an altitude more than a dozen miles high, the developers hope to minimize the effects of winds. There are still winds at 65,000 feet but the lower density of the atmosphere, combined with the shape of the "stratellite," should allow the motors to hold it in position, the developers believe.

"I would call that being in calm waters," he said.

Coleman would not release the development costs but offered a general comparison with satellite technology.

"It's hugely and significantly lower cost than a satellite – we're a satellite replacement technology – and you could talk in the order of this being $20 (million), $30 million as opposed to $250 million," he said. "Operationally, costs are very low compared to a satellite that might be $30 (million) or $40 million a year."

I like this part.."The developers planned to show off the airship during a press conference Tuesday"...sounds like we will most likely get some TV time and national coverage. And since this has hit the AP Newswire....tomorrow should be a very interesting day indeed.

Not sure....think I'd wait to hear back from the people attending the unveiling...see what they learned at the event. What impressions they got from Management. Tim Huff quote "At the unveiling, we will answer questions concerning the airship construction and performance. We will also give an updated timeline to the future events of Sanswire One."
And the OFFICIAL PR comes out Wednesday...I'm sure that will have much more detail as to current and future events. Launch could be much sooner..Leigh Coleman could have allowed alot of cushion in that statement. Because he said they hope to fly it to 45,000 feet in July....that does not necessarily rule out lower altitude flight tests way before then. Just my opinion FWIW

The Business Press, San Bernardino, Calif., technology column
11:20 p.m. 04/11/2005 Provided By Knight-Ridder Open

Apr 11, 2005 (The Business Press - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News via COMTEX) -- Local firm to unveil 'wireless' airship

Sanswire Networks LLC in San Bernardino is unveiling a prototype April 12 of its high-altitude airship that will launch later this year to rain cellular, voice, data and video signals over 126,000 square miles. Sanswire, a wholly-owned subsidiary of GlobeTel Communications Corp. in Pembroke Pines, Fla. (GTEL), ultimately wants to launch "thousands" of the 300 to 400 foot-long airships to function as high-altitude telecommunications platforms, Leigh Coleman, GlobeTel's president, said April 7.

"They're a lot cheaper than satellites. They are satellite replacement vehicles," he said.

The company hopes to launch the ship from Edwards Air Force Base in July or August, contingent on approvals from regulating agencies, he said.

Sanswire will transport attendees of the April 12 unveiling from the San Bernardino Hilton to its hangar at San Bernardino International Airport, where 50 to 60 employees have constructed the prototype ship called Sanswire One.

The prototype ship is 50 feet high, 60 feet wide and just under 200 feet long, Coleman said.

Sanswire plans to build the Sanswire Two full-size ship in Palmdale and launch the craft from Edwards. The ship, at 400 feet long, will be constructed of aluminum and will blast to 65,000 feet above the earth.

The ships will float for approximately 18 months before being returned for upgrades with the latest technology.

The company is looking to hire individuals with aerospace and lightweight construction experience.

Sanswire plans to build "very large" manufacturing facilities for the ships, Coleman said.

"Our plans are to launch at Edwards Air Force Base under the direction of NASA and the Air Force. Each agency will have to approve the flight plan before the launch date. By launching it from Edwards, we will be using non-FAA regulated air space which should expedite the flight safety approval process," Timothy M. Huff, GlobeTel's chief executive officer, said in a release.

Coleman declined to reveal the costs associated with Sanswire One or its funding sources.

Sanwire parent company GlobeTel is an international telecommunications firm specializing in voice-over-IP, international telecommunications services and wireless bank account access via mobile phones.

GlobeTel has 30,000 shareholders.

Federal nabs servers

Federal Edge Inc., a Riverside company that provides computers, electronic data storage, three-dimensional computer graphics and other technology to federal, state and local governments, has agreed to re-sell a Carlsbad firm's network and computer server backup products.

Arkeia Corp. in Carlsbad announced the deal April 4. Arkeia provides computer file backup and recovery products for offices that use Linux systems.

"Being able to provide our government and military customers with complete data protection for their Linux and UNIX servers is an important differentiator for us," Cindra Stolk, Federal Edge's president, said in a release.

The deal will broaden Arkeia's market share, particularly among federal agencies, Rick DiViesti, Arkeia's director of sales, said in the release.

The Arkeia Network Backup features 64-bit Linux support for Intel, Itanium and support of Kernel 2.6 Linux distributions. Arkeia Server Backup works with tape autoloaders.
