You know, it really *is* about the song, the tune, the piece being played. Who wrote it, who first played it, etc...that's all cool for what it's worth and those interested. But the real deal is the tune itself.
By way of contrast, think of Tony Bennet and Frank Sinatra...
Following are links to "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)," the first by Hendrix, the second by Stevie. Notice the raw power of Hendrix, vs the smooth, blues-inflected highlights of Stevie...and the differences in pick attack.
