quote:Originally posted by Upside: Ace, how old is the earth?
Based on God's word, less than 10,000 years.
Not based on God's word, based on your belief.
Can you explain how it's not based on God's word?
From creation we have the geneology from Adam to Jesus, and their life spans.
If you don't belief the bible that's a different story.
Would you please quit editing your posts before I can respond. There's overwhelming scientific evidence that debunks your 10,000 year (actually it's more like 6,000 year) theory. There is hard, conclusive, evidence that the earth is 4+ billion years old. You on the other hand have a book. My belief in that book, in part or it's entirety, has nothing to do with it.

back to this...cool--as asked earlier, how/where/why do we get "quotes" from Jesus?
Are you playing dumb, or are you serious?
quite serious--as far as I know, "Jesus' words" were finally written down much after Jesus' time. No?
Well obviously the quotes come from the bible.
If you don't trust his deciples, or trust that his quotes made it to the bible unchanged, that's a different story.
"his disciples"
Ace, even biblical scholars and theologians disagree about which disciple wrote what...
for example: was this written by three different authors, or one?
It's not a matter of my trust...it's on the record that different groups at various times argued and voted and slugged it out to decide to what went in and what stayed out...
editorial boards do it all the time--unchanged since those days.

I just want to say I understand respect your view.
There's holes in the evidence about the age of the earth.
I trust the writers of the Bible. And you trust the authors of Science papers and books.
You're just going by what scientists have said. And they are just feeding off of what they were taught in School. They make a living by publishing papers, that's their motivation for their "theories" or "discoveries" money and ego.
Like I said, I trust the writers of the Bible. And you trust the authors of Science papers and books.

Tex, what records? you got links or sources?
They found the original dead sea scrolls. There's more proof and evidence for the bible then you realize. How much time and effort have you spent on this subject. Not saying you haven't.

Ace, easy place to start (on Internet): search on "Straight Dope" (Cecil Adams)---> "who wrote the bible?"

It's not a matter of trust. In your case it's based on blind faith and a complete disregard for anything that contradicts that faith. My belief is based on facts that's been corobborated from many different lines of evidence.

If you experience god in your life, and ask the holy spirit to guide you, Things will appear different to you. I wake up in prayer everyday, and choose GOD's will, and ask GOD to send me the holy spirit, to guide me for the day, and understand his word.
The Bible is a holy book, and you need the holy spirit to read and know it.
It's god's will for everyone to know the truth. If you believe in GOD, and you ask him to, he will show you the truth.
As far as the BIBLE, Science, and some of the topics we discussed tonight...

The bible is a handbook, a manual of sorts. I'm not saying it's all false. There's lessons to be learned from it if understood and applied to the current times. An example, there's a passage (old testament) that states that if a woman rides a horse while she is having her period (I'm paraphrasing), the horse must be destroyed. Now that might have been the belief in those days. If you raise horses for a living today, are you going to abide by that rule?

In other words, in order to believe anything it says, you have to have already made an arbitrary decision to refuse to consider anything else as real, i.e., to start out believing what the bible says and declaring what it doesn't say as false, in spite of evidence to the contrary.
That is an off-hand announcement that any "open midness" and honesty you may claim is a lie.....hypocracy in other words!
That was Kierkegaard's approach to analytical thinking, hidden under reams of minute data announcements and intricate efforts at logic. He would build brilliant arguments about ethics or causality or whatever, then, negating his initial stated claim to not base everything on Church doctrin, declare Church doctrin to be true and everything else to be work of the devil. It is why I discarde him as an intellect when I was about 14 years old.
