I think the only thing they are trying to cover up is Cheney's stupidity and foolishness for shooting his bud in the face.
If they were really trying to kill the guy for some reason, they wouldn't be using a 28 gauge shotgun filled with birdshot -- that's like a glorified pellet gun. They would at least use a 12 gauge.

I don't want to be hit at 30 yards even with a .410 loaded with #12s (a proper laod for bobwhite in a .410 or 28ga.).
Ever look close at what such a load of shot does to a rabbit or squirrel. It ain't pretty and, at 30 yards, is almost guaranteed to instantaneously de-life a tree rat centered in the patern.....just not too much left that isn't too full of lead to be edible. If he was using 7 1/2 or 6 shot, the guy is lucky to be alive.

LOL, funny you mentioned that. I've been shot by a 12 guage from about 100 yrds away. I'm just glad that we were small game hunting. LOL Gotta love the ole Mossberg.
It felt like sleet hitting me. It sounded like raindrops in the leaves behind me.

I wouldn't jump to a conspiracy conclusion either. However, it's a sad commentary that our people in charge automatically, on instinct, by their very nature, opt for the cover up instead of simply coming right out and saying "...it was a hunting accident, sorry about that, guess it's time for Dick to get an eye exam and a new glasses prescription so he doesn't get the birds mixed up with the people anymore."

I agree that it's a bunch of crap to try and cover it up. But, that's the nature of our government... it's been that way probably ever since the early administrations...
Well, at least since the days of Lincoln. That guy was a cover-up artist! His acts of treason and terrorism are rarely spoken of.

Press secretary Scott McClellan said he did not know until Sunday morning that Cheney had shot someone.
Facing a press corps upset that news had been withheld, McClellan said, "I think you can always look back at these issues and look at how to do a better job."
we been hearing alot of this lately...

Armstrong said she saw Cheney's security detail running toward the scene. "The first thing that crossed my mind was he had a heart problem," she told The Associated Press.
so she wasn't an eyewitness afterall.... that would 'splain why the story doesn't really hold water....

Good ol' boy McClellan said that Whittington cause the "accident" because he violated standard "hunting protocol when he didn't yell to announce where he was and make certain the others knew he was there, so "Cheney did nothing wrong".
Hell, I've been hunting for a lot more years then that doofus has been breathing and there is no such "hunting protocol". The first and only rule is "Know where you are pointing your gun and know what is where you are pointing your gun AT ALL TIMES!!!?

I'll have to see that non-resident hunting license before I'm going to believe this bunch. It is supposed to be a matter of public record. If there hasn't been some sort of chicanery to keep it secret, why don't they produce it?
A Bird stamp is required by law, i.e,, it is part of the permit to hunt quail (it's one of the the results of our brave fighter pilot leaders tax lowering scheme for the rich....turn every thing into a users fee...that way those deadbeats on the public dole won't be getting anything free.)
Do you suppose that had one of us been caught red handed hunting without all the legally required permits that we would get off with a warning?

ya know? Mishaps like this happen alla time...
When I was growing up, my dad and uncles stressed that safety was everybody's business; ie, nobody had a particular "role," and you'd be dumb to be in any kind of brush where somebody might be shooting...Whittington may have been partially concealed, he may have fallen, he may have been playing a joke, they may have been drunk...the possibilities are nearly endless, and we'll never know.
But not coming forth with the story quickly is just too dumb for words. With these guys, it's just one stumbling, staggering, overlapping blunder after another. Jeez, Brown and Melchezidick are shooting it out on page one about Katrina, and Cheney can't even handle a hunting accident...
Too bad Hunter Thompson ain't around to get the book contract to document the black comedy of the entire two terms...It's almost slapstick

That's what I mean, though: lottsa guys "think" they're being safe...
slapstick/not funny: can you imagine the reactions of the professional PR people close to all this? Surely some good books will emerge, after the election...

here's the deal: even if that played a role, how much better to take responsibility, announce it quickly and even show up at the hospital...ok, later maybe, after a buncha coffee
but that deal about being "very worried" at dinner? that's lame, too...
What coulda been a quick deal is now gonna have reporters all over it. Remember Gary Hart, daring the press?
