Advertisers see opportunities in targeting gays

By ABIGAIL KLINGBEIL
THE JOURNAL NEWS
(Original publication: April 14, 2002)

Miller Brewing Co. began marketing to gays three decades ago, during a time most companies ignored gay and lesbian consumers. Despite 30 years in the arena, Miller ran its first national television commercial featuring a gay couple just last spring.

Miller's "Switcheroo" advertisement shows two women checking out an attractive man across a bar. After they ask a bartender to send a Miller Lite to the object of their attention, another man joins him. The women appear thrilled there are now two good-looking men within their sights. Then the men hold hands, and glance over at their admirers. "Well, at least he's not married," one of the women says.

The story behind the commercial offers a glimpse into the struggles companies face when deciding if and how to depict gays and lesbians in advertising.

Miller did not set out to develop an ad with a gay couple in it, said company spokesman Scott Bussen. The spot fit in well with the company's "Grab a Miller Lite. It's Miller time" campaign, which focuses on sharing good times with friends, Bussen said. And, he added, "In research before developing the campaign, we found out that Miller Lite drinkers in general tend to be more open-minded and more inclusive."

In another version of the "Switcheroo" commercial, which never appeared on television, the two men kissed at the end.

"It basically just came down to which ending we thought paid off better in terms of the humor and making an impact," Bussen said. "What we did not want to happen with that spot was for it to become so blatantly about shock value" that it did not fit in with the campaign, Bussen said. Miller wanted to make sure the ad was relevant to a wide group of consumers, he said.

For years, advertisements did not show gay couples or make any gay references. Companies are now targeting the gay and lesbian market more than ever. But homophobia and anti-gay sentiment still exist in the United States, and there are few companies that show gay couples or make gay references in mainstream advertising. In some cases, even when companies do reach out, their messages are vague.

"Everyone's been trying to figure out how to do this, so it's been a matter of trying different things," says Mike Wilke, founder of Commercial Closet Association, which tracks how gays are depicted in advertising. The Manhattan-based organization awarded Milwaukee, Wis.-based Miller its 2001 Leader of the Year award.

A handful of companies, including Miller, IKEA and Subaru of America Inc., have brought gay themes into their mainstream advertising. They made this decision to attract gay and lesbian consumers, and to attract the all-important 18- to 35-year-old consumer group, which is increasingly open-minded.

In the world of consumerism, loyalty is king. And gays and lesbians make up a fiercely loyal consumer group. They often have more discretionary income and time than the general market, since they are less likely to have children.

Miller has found that as a group adult gay consumers tend to drink light beer at a higher rate than the general public, Bussen said. And Miller Lite, introduced in the mid-1970s, is the company's No. 1 brand.

Yvette Christofilis, an administrative assistant at The Loft, a gay services agency in White Plains, says the gay community's memory runs long when it comes to depictions of gays and lesbians in advertisements.

"How long ago was that IKEA commercial and people still remember that," says Christofilis, referring to a 1994 television advertisement that showed a male couple shopping together at IKEA for furniture. "If you're a stigmatized community and you see people stepping forward with the guts to say, 'I know your money is as green as anybody else's,' then the loyalty is there."

Denmark-based IKEA ran the advertisement as part of its Life Stages campaign, which looked at times in people's lives that might require new furniture, said IKEA spokesman Clive Cashman. The couple in the ad represented the "moving in together" stage.

Asked why IKEA chose to depict a same-sex couple, Cashman said, "Why not?" He said choosing a gay couple reflects the company's inclusive attitude. "I think anybody can identify with the need for buying furniture when moving in together."

But IKEA's decision to run the advertisement was not an easy one. It decided to run the ad only in the evening, and only in selected cities.

Cashman said the company never intends to offend people with its advertisements. "Our position is to neither be an advocate for nor sit in judgment of anyone's sexual orientation. We would hope that others join us in this," he said.

In Europe, a commercial for IKEA's "Redecorate Your Life" campaign in 1999 showed a woman shopping at IKEA after recovering from a sex-change operation. Commercial Closet calls the ad "a remarkably unjudgmental, rather uplifting portrayal of a person who has changed sexes."

But would an ad like that play on U.S. airwaves?

"What we do find is we have to be more sensitive here," Cashman said. "There is a higher sensitivity to a lot of issues, I think, when it comes to sexuality, to race and religion." In fact, the company received many complaints when the 1994 ad first aired.

But some gays and lesbians still choose IKEA because of that ad. Companies that are early-entrants into marketing to gays and lesbians may be remembered more easily.

Christofilis says she is loyal to American Express Co. because of its early sponsorship of the International Gay & Lesbian Business and Entertainment Expo in New York City, which is now in its ninth year. "They really went out of the their way to show diversity. So when I had some financial questions I went to American Express," Christofilis says.

Lou Tharp, who lives in Upper Nyack, says if he were in the market for a four-wheel-drive utility vehicle, he would turn to Subaru in a minute. That's because Subaru, through its gay and lesbian marketing efforts, has reached out to him.

Subaru began its gay-friendly advertising in 1997 after its research showed Subarus are popular with lesbians, according to the Commercial Closet Association, which tracks how gays are depicted in advertising. One ad showed Subarus with license plates such as "P-TOWN," a reference to Provincetown, the Cape Cod tourist spot popular among gays and lesbians. Recently, Subaru hired tennis superstar Martina Navratilova, who is a lesbian, as a pitchwoman.

"I will make a special effort to buy from companies that advertise to gays and lesbians. I'll also make a special effort not to buy from companies that vocally advertise against gays and lesbians," says Tharp, president of Upper Nyack-based Clay Marketing, an advertising, marketing and public relations firm.

Christofilis says gay-friendly advertisements in mainstream media, such as Newsweek or network television, have a bigger impact than ads that appear in gay media, such as The Advocate or OUT magazine.

Howard Buford, president of Prime Access, a Manhattan-based marketing firm that specializes in gay and lesbian, black and Hispanic consumers, says it is not efficient for advertisers only to run gay-specific ads in mainstream media. He said advertisers are more likely to use an inclusive strategy, such as showing a same-sex couple in a montage, for mainstream advertising.

Buford says large, national advertisers first began targeting gays eight to 10 years ago, but a significant number of companies have joined the market in the past three to four years as research has established the high spending power of the gay and lesbian community.

Buford says advertisers have begun using more clear and direct depictions of gays in advertising.

"I think in the earlier days there was more of what was called gay vague advertising," Buford said. "A lot of the ads were something that gay people could see themselves in but it really wasn't clearly gay."

Wilke says it is only recently that companies have started to talk about their gay marketing strategy. Sometimes the company's intent is itself vague.

In 1997, Volkswagen aired a commercial with two young men loading an abandoned chair into their hatchback. Because it was first played during the controversial coming out episode of "Ellen," which many advertisers fled from, many people assumed the two men were supposed to be a couple.

"(Volkswagen) says they never intended for it to be a gay couple, but it's OK if people want to think so," says Wilke, whose Web site (www.commercialcloset.org) has a collection of more than 700 advertisements with gay depictions, which he rates as positive, neutral or negative.

"Some advertisements seem to take on a different message when they appear in a gay magazine," Wilke says. "If in a mainstream magazine, you see a bare-chested man in an advertisement, it may not say anything to you. But if that same bare-chested man appears in a gay magazine, it seems to appear that he is gay."

Wilke says he started the Commercial Closet because it is important for the gay community, which he estimates as at least 6 percent of the U.S. population, to realize that there is a body of work that acknowledges its existence.

"In this country, whether it's a valid perspective or not, many people don't feel validated until they're seen as a consumer group," Wilke says.

Expect depictions of gays in advertising, and gay marketing in general, to continue to evolve. The landscape may change dramatically if a new gay network from MTV Networks and Showtime Networks becomes reality.

Ed Sedarbaum, executive director of The Loft in White Plains, says he would like to see the entire range of diversity in American life portrayed in advertising. "It's not that I want to see gay and lesbian people marketed to. It's that when you are marketing a car to anyone in your market, there should sometimes be gay people and sometimes straight people and sometimes white people and sometimes black people."

Wilke says that in an ideal world, the gay community is integrated in a non-exploitative way into advertising. After advertisers drop the idea of gays as a stereotyped joke, there will be an awareness that lesbians and gays are an important part of society, Wilke says. "And they're going to start showing up in ads as part of a picture of what the diversity of our world looks like today."

i have to say that i am disappointed in this behavior----HOWEVER---i assume this is a political statement----very provocative--and i expect that it will be very expensive..they have probably just violated (IMO) some FEDERAL civil rights laws (IMO) and that SHOULD make for a lot of publicity in the election year, in FLA--a state that will be BITTERLY fought over in NOV----break out the popcorn---reality really is stranger than fiction....
i would rather see these kinds of political fights than one about who can provide better security.....
no doubt the religious fundamentalists on all side are gnashing their teeth and spitting mad....LOL
maybe the hotel(and all of Key West) would be a good place to send e-mails about QBID?????

Who told you that? There is no way you should believe a rumor that says the price is going to go down to .01 next week, then drop to .0015. Who told you this craziness? I am not saying it isn't possible, but nobody could say that for sure.

Well here is my outlook for monday based on the past weeks pattern. I will be selling half of my shares somewhere between 9:30 and 11. I see it opening at around .0207. I expect after the open for it to move to around .024 to .026. Then somewhere after 11 and before 4 I will buy back in at around .0148. If pattern holds I should be able to do this. The close should be around .02. The average daily differance in the low and high of the day was .005575. The ave move from the day befores close and the next days open was a +.00295. Thats where I get my figures from. So you watch and see that the pattern does not happen this time and I get caught out with my you know what hanging out in the wind. I have used this many times and it seems to work very well. So monday we will see. Of course if it opens down all selling is off. But I just can not see that. This is my opinion and please no one follow this as I am totally nuts.

UNKNOWN: I do not think so going back to .0015. I think the lowest we might see it at again is .012 and I do not believe that. Probably somewhere around .015 is more real. But who knows for sure.

Absolutely. There is no way we can go to the levels of 1/2 a penny..THE ONLY way we could see that, is if Q-Television says they can't make it to convention, they postpone the launch or they quit..Then we could see those levels! I personally don't think we'll go higher then .03 the next 2 weeks only because its anticipation time and people are just waiting for those key dates.

So play the swings for the couple weeks as everyone will be buying and selling --- Then once we have a PR or hear good news about their sucess at convention --- Its all buying from there...

But remember - NO ONE KNOWS THE PRICE OF TOMMORROW!

I still hold all of my shares. I'm not planning to sell at this point...or not willing to. I've read about a whole lot of rumors today. Some of the people are reliable, some are not. If even a few of these things are true, I would hate myself if I sold.

Chuck, when you go to the convention in New Orleans, let us all know who is sponsoring the QBID booth. If any of these people know what they are talking about we should have several very positive PR.

GLTA!!!!

I bet I know the price for tomorrow. It will be .0178. HEHE. But you are right no one knows for sure about monday. I use patterns and I love this one. After monday I might hate it. I think the reason the price will steadly go up is because of the ANTICIPATION. No one wants to get caught out when the big news comes. Like the big stocks they run up in front of the earnings #s big time normally. I feel the same will be true here. Only my opinion. Opening for the best for all of us monday. Send money to CASH if you have not already. He is our eyes and hears at the show in NO. Him being their could save or make us a lot of money. So give him whatever you can to get him the best possible chance to do a #1 job. I am depending on him to get us in the millionair club or keeping us out of the broke house. Go OBID.

TRIANGLE TELEVISION NETWORK SCAMS AGAIN

(GLINN, 10-08-01)--- In a previous news story, GLINN reported that Triangle Multi-Media, Inc., the operators of the Triangle Television Network are running a stock scam and that the company is operating in California illegally. We previously exposed their national advertising campaign as a fraud. Triangle claimed a contract with the DISH Network and advertised this in their full page newspaper ads, on the web and in news releases. This was a total fraud. They did not have and never had a contract with DISH.

Later, apparently they did work out a contract but never made the payments required under the contract, thus it never went into effect.

Triangle advertised they were launching on September 5 and claimed they were broadcasting a signal via C-Band satellite. No source could verify they were transmitting. Later reports indicated they transmitted for 3 hours. The host of their "Good Morning Gay America" show removed TTN information from his web site and has posted his resume.

This stock has been the subject of paid manipulation, and has been pumped by paid promoters who have posted numerous lies and misleading statements in various public forums.

Although Triangle has issued numerous press releases, they have not followed through on a single one and have never successfully accomplished any of their claims. We view Triangle as a complete stock fraud and swindle. There are reports that it is being investigated by the California Attorney General which is considering both civil and criminal prosecution.

Providing all technical and programming aspects are met, the network will have a "soft" launch by middle May 2004, running one-hour sampler programming blocks in various dayparts to give cable operators a chance to preview the network. Regular programming will begin transmission via satellite and will be available as a subscription channel on selected cable systems once all transmission issues have been resolved. http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:xrkASfVPo1wJ:rainbowfish.typepad.com/ronandroger/glbt_issues/+California+Attorney+General+%2B+Triangle+Multi-Media&hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=UTF-8

Triangle Multi-Media Limited CEO Sends Letter to Shareholders.
PR Newswire, April 12, 2000

PALM SPRINGS, Calif., April 12 /PRNewswire/ --

Frank Olsen, President and CEO of Triangle Multi-Media Limited, Inc. (NQB Pink Sheet: QBID), today sent the following letter to Triangle Multi-Media Limited, Inc. (NQB Pink Sheet: QBID) and Triangle Broadcasting Company (NQB Pink Sheet: GAAY) shareholders:

LETTER TO THE SHAREHOLDERS

Of Triangle Broadcasting Company and Triangle Multi-Media Limited, Inc.

Dear Shareholder:

As many of you know, the shareholders of record for both Triangle

Multi-Media Ltd and Triangle Broadcasting Company have effectively agreed

through individual proxy statements to merge into a new third entity

under a business combination. The new entity will be formed in the

coming weeks. The new company will begin drafting a preliminary

prospectus in order to raise substantial capital through a public

offering of its securities. The company is exploring the possibility of

listing on a regional or national exchange. Triangle Broadcasting Co.

shares will be converted to Triangle Multi-Media shares at a ratio of

2.375 to 1 and will simultaneously be converted to shares in the new

company. Your shares will be fully registered and free trading under the

registration statement.

The management of Triangle Broadcasting Company and Triangle

Multi-Media Limited, Inc., especially myself, have been publicly

criticized by certain groups who may or may not be shareholders of the

company. They have attempted to use the company for their own personal

vendetta or gain. They are either gay bashers or day traders or a

combination of both. People have tried to manipulate the stock and have

done everything they could to destroy management and the two companies.

I am pleased to say that the companies are stronger than ever before and

have great potential.

When ITHC was acquired it was for a cash infusion to gain control of

Palm Springs Television Studios. More importantly, it was to gain access

to the mainstream television market, which we have done very

successfully. It should be understood that the new company will maintain

the path it has been pursuing for the past six months, that is developing

new TV and radio programming for mainstream audiences and advertisers.

It must be understood, however, that Triangle Broadcasting Co. and

Triangle Multi-Media Limited, Inc. both feel that the gay and lesbian

community needs television and radio programming. We also know that

advertisers are beginning to come to the table. Just recently United

Airlines announced that they are the official gay airline. That is a big

step for a Fortune 500 company to make. The gay community has an

8 billion dollar yearly disposable income. There are a lot of straight

companies advertising in gay print. These companies are looking for

quality gay programming that will not offend straight people and it is

the goal of Triangle Broadcasting Co. and Triangle Multi-Media to produce

such programming. With the success of Triangle Multi-Media
programs that bring us in contact with advertising companies, it is

relatively easy to sell them on gay programming.

I would like to address the fact that several gay companies have

attempted to launch in the past and have failed miserably. Although they

had great intentions, they had no facilities or track record, only an

idea. We have a proven track record producing gay radio programming 19

hours a day, 7 days a week for the past 3 years. We are also producing

two successful national television shows. We have a complete

state-of-the-art television studio, including a recently acquired virtual

reality set which will enable us to do news, AuctionsTelevision,

BingoTelevision and commercials without the expense of building sets. It

will save us millions of dollars in the coming years.

The combination of Triangle Broadcasting Co. and Triangle Multi-Media

is a company doing things. We are producing programming, developing

Internet sites and building assets -- and we are doing it all with the

shareholders' interest in mind. We have two primary goals: to make the

best product possible and to remember at all times that the shareholder

is a primary partner in everything we do.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Frank Olsen

President and CEO

Triangle Multi-Media Limited, Inc.

In a previous news story, GLINN reported that Triangle Multi-Media, Inc., the operators of the Triangle Television Network are running a stock scam and that the company is operating in California illegally. We previously exposed their national advertising campaign as a fraud. Triangle claimed a contract with the DISH Network and advertised this in their full page newspaper ads, on the web and in news releases. This was a total fraud. They did not have and never had a contract with DISH.
Has anyone heard this before...if so have they questioned olsen about this when speaking to him? Please let me know... thanks...

This thread could stay under a million pages, if we quit posting these outdated news items that are now totally worthless. Only post current items. NLT, I would say now 1 April 2004. Only my opinion. GO QBID.

Outdated maybe. relevant yes. if posted before well it will not hurt to post it again. Just posting info I found some of which tells about their being fruadulant.
"We previously exposed their national advertising campaign as a fraud."

Things like that have to worry people, and not everyone on this board, has been reaing every thread for the past weeks, or even days. Trying to sort through it all, in what is about 100 pages of threads is a big task. So if anyone feels they have something worth pointing out...old or new...to me it is important. just my opinion though. despite what i have posted I still will be leaving my money in this stock this week, while trying to find out more about the past fruad allegation. But new or old, NO information is not worth posting!
I am off to dinner night all.
oh let me apologize for my drunken ramblings last night. Its amazing that my iq can drop from 150 to like 115 when I get a few in me...
enjoy the weekend!

No need to apologize Diesel. Everyone needs to know and sometimes be refreshed about all info. concerning QBID...new and old. It's hard to look back through all of the pages in all of the threads for this info. sometimes, especially if you weren't aware or invested at the time the first thread was started. I think I've pretty much read everything, good and bad. Considering the timing of all of this, the past failures, and all that's changed since the last time they failed to launch, I honestly feel they have their ducks in a row this time. They have the backing of a major corporate investor also. Everyone knows that successful corporate investors don't gamble to lose. I could be totally wrong, but no one has proven that to my satisfaction yet....especially the people who once said this stock would never see a penny.

What did you do to U4? Haven't seen him post all day. Did you slip him a valium? Did you nuke his computer? Or did you tell the men in the white coats where to find him? I'm sincerely worried. LOL!!!
Seriously, I do enjoy reading his posts and find that it isn't as entertaining when he's not online posting his commentary.

WAKE UP U4, IT'S MONDAY!!!!

sorry,

I forgot to mention he is attending his cat's GERMAN FUNERAL. They say German Cat's have rituals for there morning. anyhow he should be back after he gets through with all that.

Oh yeah, don't turn him in to the SSCA. He got carried away with rubbing the cat's belly and she died from laughing at U4 while saying $5.

Maybe someone should send U4 $5 so he can rub that now?

Brandw. $50 = 2,857 shares @.0175. Those two thousand eight hundred & fifty seven shares could equal $5000 one day. I see why he doesn't want to touch them. BUT you do make a great point. I just took out $400 worth of profits to pay for my car to be fixed. Some people are smarter though.
I tell you what, for $10 I dont care if he stays home. If QBID is up past 3 cents before May 1st - I guaruntee you I will go there myself!

Plus the fact it was my idea. I appreciate what he's doing for all of us!

If you have read all the post, in ALL THE THREADS you would.

A question was asked, I think by BART. Why don't someone go. Well, considering I live only 6.5 hrs one way, I voluntered. I also am taking off work for this and the cost is ALOT.

For one day it will cost:
$200.00 (me missing work)
$275.00 (me getting in NON-NCTA member)
$70-75.00 (Me paying for the Fuel BOTH ways)
$unknown (Me using my car - wear and tear)
$my P time (ME being there and reporting back)
$ETC ETC ( do you get the drift )

Now, if you have any stock in this and you couldn't go, would you not donate to help someone go, so they can share the news?

Geeesh, I feel like a school teacher.

So you havent made a lot on the stock. Just kidding. Anyhow nice post. Didnt realize the cost would be that much. I live in west tennessee NO is about that far from me also. Maybe a bit farther. If I decide to take a large stake in this stock I may go myself. I have a blackberry and would be more than willing to drop post while I am there. If it will work in NewOrleans I assume it probably would. What is the date and time of the show chuck? Sorry if I am being repetitive with the post.

Brandon
