News out on MSFT 10 minutes after closing:::
Might Be good in the morning..

DJ With Azure, Microsoft Makes Big Bet On Cloud Computing

.
By Jessica Hodgson
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)--Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) is staking its place in cloud computing, trying both to grab a share of the fast-growing market for off-premise computing and protect its franchise packaged software products.

Last month, the world's biggest software company unveiled Windows Azure, a platform that allows developers to write Microsoft-compatible software that is stored on and accessed from its servers. Azure also lets users access online versions of Microsoft applications, like databases and email servers.

Azure underscores Microsoft's intention to shake up the world of cloud computing, the growing trend towards hosting applications and data on off-site servers, rather than on individual computers' hard drives. The Redmond, Wash. company is trying to tempt its core customers - the world's biggest companies and most consumers - to stay with familiar products but access them in a new way, rather than switch to alternative services offered by cloud-computing pioneers like Google Inc. (GOOG) and Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN).

Embracing cloud computing marks a change in thinking at Microsoft. Worried that cloud computing would cannibalize sales of its Windows operating system and Office software applications, which account for the bulk of its $60 billion in annual revenue, the software giant has up until now treated cloud computing as a marginal trend. Now, it is clearly more concerned that not offering those products online could mean something worse: losing sales to its cloud competitors.

"What I think Microsoft is trying to do is to freeze the market," said Matt Rosoff, an analyst with Seattle-based research firm Directions on Microsoft. "They want people who may have been thinking about experimenting with on-demand products to hold off and wait to see what their products are like."

Microsoft is a late entrant to cloud-computing, which has allowed Google, Amazon and Salesforce.com Inc. (CRM) to develop the new market. Many smaller companies are adopting cloud-computing because it allows them to cut costs by eliminating outright software purchases and pay for just the software they use.

Though everyone agrees cloud-computing is growing, opinions differ as to whether it will replace on-premise computing or simply develop alongside it. Deutsche Bank analyst Tom Ernst says the market for packaged software has already peaked. Within five years, Ernst estimates cloud-computing services will account for roughly half of the $60 billion application software market. By contrast, Oracle Corp.'s Chief Executive (ORCL) Larry Ellison, has mocked cloud computing as "gibberish", and said few companies will be able to profit from it.

Microsoft's commitment to the business model could boost expectations, prompting big companies that have been reluctant to embrace cloud computing to adopt it. Richard Campbell, co-founder of Vancouver-based Web developer Strangeloop Networks, says many of his customers are asking about cloud computing, though few have switched, largely because they have concerns about security and reliability.

"Microsoft being in this game lends legitimacy to the model," Campbell said. "This will mean cloud computing is no longer an avant-garde thing to do."

How much of the market Microsoft will grab and what sort of revenue cloud-computing will generate remain open questions. Bob Muglia, who runs Microsoft's servers business, said in an interview the company will tap a variety of business models, but declined to be specific.

Cloud computing will likely open multiple revenue streams for Microsoft. The company could simply charge a metered rate for using its computer power and storage. In addition, some developers say Microsoft might be able to offer tiered pricing based on priority access to its computers. It will also charge for subscriptions to its Office suite or database products. Lastly, it might be able to sell advertising on some of the products offered to consumers.

Analysts say figuring out the revenue model - and how much it will contribute to profits - could help support Microsoft's share price, which has fallen 42% so far this year, mirroring the decline in the Nasdaq. On Wednesday, Microsoft shares closed down 4.3% to $20.30.

Microsoft is moving carefully, protecting its packaged software franchise while assessing how the cloud computing market will develop. It has adopted a hybrid approach because it says most customers will continue to want on-premise products, a position supported by many analysts.

"For large enterprises, it's not a foregone conclusion that they will all move to the cloud," said Peter O'Kelly, principal analyst with O'Kelly Consulting. "For those that do, I think there are scenarios where Microsoft's profitability online could be greater than its offline profitability."

Still, if Microsoft moves too slowly, it risks letting innovators, like Google and Amazon, grab market share. Those companies don't face Microsoft's profitability dilemma because they don't have physical software franchises to protect.

That has some observers saying Microsoft will ultimately have to bite the bullet and accept an erosion of their packaged software profits.

"If it becomes a popular way of doing mainstream business, it's hard to see how they can avoid cannibalizing sales of their desktop services," says Nicholas Carr, a former editor of the Harvard Business Review who has written a book about cloud computing. "It's going to be a scale game."

I just called scottrade office about margin calls and stuff , I did not want to use the margin account money but the mistake I had yesterday put me in it but I still have plenty of room for MSFT , more room for it to go down than I would hold it anyway..I cant beleive its even under 20 , thats just craazy..I cant understand this market and with the dollar down and gold being down at the same time has been against all years of history in the market , and I cant figure out how the last few days that my charts are even showing the total opposit of what a stock is doing according to SMA and Bol bands , its freekin driving me nuts,,

msft is most likely tied into the "consumer spending" BS they keep pumping into the news..so most likely projected Xmas sales will be down..

Sounds like a good idea morpheus , I dont have a clue and i am tied up now with all of my money and then some in it hoping it will pop back..I just cant see that with all the positive news about where they are going it is still dropping.. MSN says its tied to Intel and they had a bad 3Q just come out so this might only last a few days I might tough it out and hold at least to a wash position (20.65) And that seems low for MSFT looking at income and history of the company..
