NEW YORK (CNN) -- The Republican Party is becoming a cartoon.

Where to start?

Bobby Jindal: "I'm certainly not nearly as good of a speaker as Obama." Good OF a speaker? How about not as good at eighth-grade grammar either. It's embarrassing.

Sarah Palin? Billing the taxpayers for her kids to travel to official events the children weren't even invited to? She finally agreed to pay back the state for that money she took.

Her per diem charges to the state in the amount of $17,000 while she was living at home instead of in the governor's mansion? She has now agreed to pay the taxes owed on that money. Another tawdry grab at a few dollars that didn't belong to her.

Michael Steele, the newly elected chairman of the Republican National Committee, down on his knees apologizing to the helium-filled poster boy of the conservative right? Pathetic.

If the Republicans are ever to emerge from the long dark night they have created for themselves it will have to be without pandering to the right wing nuts that comprise Rush Limbaugh's radio audience. Didn't they learn anything in the last election?

All of which is to say the GOP is blowing it big time. They were handed a golden opportunity to redeem themselves with the election of Barack Obama -- a chance to line up and in unison condemn the evil their party put in the White House the previous eight years.

The country had had a bellyful of George Bush, Dick Cheney, and the rest of the messengers of darkness in Washington who had sold out the principles of the Republican Party in favor of huge deficits, a doubling of the national debt, and a growing intrusion of the federal government into people's private lives.

But instead of getting on board the change train and recognizing the incredible amount of damage their people had done to the country, Republicans go blithely along as though nothing has happened. They're busy obstructing Obama's programs and criticizing the Democrats' spending plans that are aimed at trying to bring the country out of a horrible recession.

I hate to break it to them, but a lot has happened. And they're not going to like any of it.

The latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll shows the Republican Party's favorability rating at an all-time low. President Obama's is at an all-time high. The same poll shows that Republicans are getting most of the blame for the partisanship that hinders governmental progress. And perhaps most telling, when asked which party is best equipped to lead the country out of recession, the Republicans trail the Democrats by a stunning 30 points.

And while all this is going on, the GOP ran a straw poll on who the party's nominee should be for president in 2012. Ready?

Mitt Romney finished first followed by Bobby Jindal, Ron Paul and Sarah Palin.

The Republican Party is marching double-time down the road to irrelevance and they don't even know it.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Jack Cafferty.

Jack Cafferty is clueless. The Republicans pandered to the left in nominating John McCain and lost in a landslide. If the Republicans ever want to gain any credibility, they must become true conservatives. They're no where near that point now.

Obama WILL destroy the economy with his insane spending and wacko socialist agenda (that makes Bush look like a conservative). Once the economy totally collapses, then there will be a great demand for conservative principles. The question is whether conservatives can gain control of the Republican party or whether the party will simply disintegrate as a clone of the socialists.

Now that is truly funny! Don't look now but Obama is exploding the budget deficit and the national debt! He is a direct threat to every freedom loving American and he will commit the ultimate intrusion of the federal government into our lives.

"The country had had a bellyful of George Bush, Dick Cheney, and the rest of the messengers of darkness in Washington who had sold out the principles of the Republican Party in favor of huge deficits, a doubling of the national debt, and a growing intrusion of the federal government into people's private lives."

Cafferty, like so many that have been constantly bombarded with the propaganda crap from the right-wing makes the mistake they have conditioned him to make and offers as a claim of fact that the republican party, within the lifetime of anyone living, acts as a principled conservator of fiscal restraint and social responsibility.

Demonstrate what republican administration after the hopelessly failed Hoover fiasco has so much as honestly or even honorably suggested not saddling the Nation with huge financial burdens that staggered the imagination. Republicans talk the talk, then do exactly the opposite. (I do not wish to imply that all of their efforts have been bad ones. Take for example the massive amounts of future monies required in Ike's sneaking the interstate highway system into the budget as a part of "defense" funding, after the Congressional republicans had stiffled all attempts to sufficiently fund interstate transportation, claiming "fiscal responsibility" was their reasoning, when in fact, they only were interested in disenfranchising labor. That camouflaging of a highway as necessary for transporting ICBMs was a stroke of genius that the man realized must be done in order to allow the nations transportation system to not be a bottleneck that restricted commerce and prevented the Nation from competing internationally.)

As for social restraint, the republicans since Hoover have either succeeded or attempted to so weigh down our laws with so massive a collection of religious, racial, and class dependent legislation that our prisons are now nearly full of what they call social misfits and failures instead of criminals (sort of what the Nazis did to start off the concentration camp system they later used to punish Jews and Gypsies and mentally deprived folks for living). In truth, the republicans have laid the keel of so many ships designed solely to float in a sea of intolerance that it boggles the mind.

LESS GOVERNMENT, BY HIND END! No, indeed, more and more all intended as modifications of the Constitution or modification to the social fabric of the culture, so as to eventually destroy it and cast the Nation to the whims of fascism and bigotry.

bdgee,

Did you read the article? I am curious, I don't understand this part of what you posted. "Cafferty, like so many that have been constantly bombarded with the propaganda crap from the right-wing makes the mistake they have conditioned him to make and offers as a claim of fact that the republican party, within the lifetime of anyone living, acts as a principled conservator of fiscal restraint and social responsibility."

I didn't get that impression from the article. He was being very critical of the GOP, which all should be for the mess they put us in. Please clarify, or maybe I misread what your point was.

Pagan,

I did read the article. I also quite frequently listen to him on CNN.

I point to his general use of the language of the claims of this recent edition of the republican party, that it is a party of fiscal restrain and social responsibility. He makes that mistake on the TV too, even when, as he was trying to do in that article, speak of the reality rather than the propaganda image planted by the Party rhetoric. He, like you and me and everyone else that has been saturated with the mantra keep repeating the mantra as we salivate to the ringing of the republican Party Pavlovian bell.

What I wish is that it was THE Republican Party and not this usurper of the good name that has so trained us. I fear I wish in vain for some restrain and honor in republican rhetoric and Limbaugh will remain the voice of the Party.

No, mine aren't worthy in the face of yours, but then, particularly where absoluter bitterness and hateful deprecation are measured, you are a true genius of the art....

I will emerge sober and much sooner than three years (like daily), as drinking and doping are not habits I have. Perhaps you might consider some sort of counseling to ease up that bitterness and hate, because those are habits you have in more than great abundance. (And some devotion to fact wouldn't hurt.)
