Fresh Water for folks traveling out of the affected areas.
Simple things like Anti-Bacterial soap. Alcohol [ isopropyl ].
Hydrogen Peroxide..
Large Band-Aids
Anti-infection ointments
Cortaid for rashes..
Gasoline, for that special situation.
Paper Towels and TP...Remember what happened last time..Even something as simple as first-aid and a shower, can save a life.

Building supplys in very limited supply.. Contractors to do the work very limited.
Many roofs not fixed properly from last year. A donation of plywood could really help folks out.

I live in west central Florida. Home Depot, Lowes, Cox...you name it...are replete with building supplies and "hurricane necessities": generators, plywood, batteries, tarps, rope, bottled water, wind-up radios, lanterns, flashlights, etc...all the above were flowing like milk and honey in the Promised Land.
If people have a scintilla of initiative, a little common sense and are in decent health then "Hurricane Season" is a no-brainer.
Alberto is nothing but a blessing for the State of Florida - we needed some serious rain.
I am hoping Alberto takes an immediate turn to the East and increases to a Cat 2 - my trees could use some pruning from Mother Nature.

Goes back to my above post. If you're dumb enough to live in Hurricane alley, and your house gets smashed, welcome to Lord of Flies.
No lumber? No water? MOVE INLAND.
All profits for me.
You live in Pennsylvania. What natural disasters hit there? Hmmm, none that I can think of. Ok, how about this. What if all the Quakers and Amish folks decided to ban together and rape, pillage, and plunder your state, and your home was one that some half crazed Amish woman decided to torch? You'd be looking for all the charitable donations you could get your hands on, wouldn't you?

Now that you've brought the Amish into this... you should know that the Amish refuse any and all government assistance, no matter what. We can all take a valuable lesson from the Amish. When any kind of disaster or tragedy strikes, they get the job done themselves. They take care of things themselves... they don't need or rely on the blue suits in D.C.
The Amish don't suck off the government's teet like the ghettophiles in New Orleans do. I believe the government has limited responsibility in these matters. It doesn't make sense that Americans complain when the government listens to their phone calls and then they complain when the government doesn't come and clean up their messes. It's time to grow up...

Right. But I'm making the assumption that repoman is not Amish. He is using a computer after all.

our economy is so dependant on the Fed Govt handouts we would have a depression if they stopped.... and YES, the Amish would probably never skip a beat... i do admire that aspect of their culture...
every penny given to the poor goes into some business persons bottom line... that's why we call them poor people

After this hurricane season we may have a whole new group of poor. Guess the ones hollering the loudest about being self sufficiant and able to handle the situation will refuse government water, food, shelter and medical care, if their homes, money, livelyhood, and transportation are gone in a nights fury.

First of all, if the Amish attempt to storm my homestead, I've got my Florida Non resident concealed weapon permit, and my 12 guage shotgun ready to take those quakers out from the back deck... BLAM!
Secondly, can we have conversations in reality here? Why don't you use aliens as your example?
Third, now I no longer wonder why we are a nation of VICTIMS, and probably will be conquered by Mexico in the next 100 years. Dusty - the gov't should help in your time of need??? Ok, maybe. But not private companies. No insurance for either the morons who live by the sea, or the rich who think they can beat Mother Nature. F 'em. If you build in a hurricane zone, tornado alley, earthquake area just so you can have a great view or float your yacht, I say DROWN m'ther f'cker when Mother Nature unleashes her PMS on yo azz.
Florida should be left to the gators.
