Nearly Two-Thirds of Americans Have Tried Organic Foods and Beverages

November 18, 2005 07:00:33 (ET)

AUSTIN, Texas, Nov 18, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Just after the third anniversary in late October of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) implementation of the National Organic Program, which mandates a national standard for the production of organic foods, an annual survey* released today reveals nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of Americans have tried organic foods and beverages, jumping from just over half (54 percent) in both 2003 and 2004. The market for organic foods continues to grow, with 27 percent of respondents indicating they consume more organic foods and beverages than they did one year ago. Ten percent consume organic foods several times per week, up from just seven percent last year.

According to the 2005 Whole Foods Market (WFMI, Trade) Organic Trend Tracker, Americans are buying organic foods and beverages for a variety of reasons. The top three are: avoidance of pesticides (70.3 percent), freshness (68.3 percent), and health and nutrition (67.1 percent). More than half (55 percent) buy organic to avoid genetically modified foods. Also, more than half of all respondents agree that organic foods and beverages are "better for my health" (52.8 percent) and better for the environment (52.4 percent).

"Organic foods continue to move into the mainstream, and more Americans are choosing organic foods as part of a lifestyle aimed at wellness. It's long been acknowledged that organic food is a better choice for the environment, and we applaud organizations like The Organic Center who are working to more clearly define how organics are better and more nutritious for our bodies through long-term and meaningful scientific studies," said Margaret Wittenberg, vice president of communications and quality standards at Whole Foods Market and a former member of the USDA's National Organic Standards Board.

The survey shows significantly higher taste and quality ratings from Americans who regularly consume organic foods and beverages, suggesting these consumers hold strong beliefs about the value and benefits of organics as a lifestyle choice. Of those who regularly consume organic foods and beverages:

So I dropped the ball big time QUEST, what is your target? What is your AMEP target as well? By the way, this companies industry was a big deal on good morning america or one of the network morning news. The Dupont lawsuit has brought this to the spotlight and I do not think we are going to see this issue go away for some time. Free PR

Feels good to earn some green. I feel very confident about next week. Tonights news on television talking about the dupont whistleblower, WFMI cracking down on toxic plastics; this thing is ready to boom on the right news. Also just being put on the SHO list seems to have helped as well. There are too many factors playing in our favor for me to sell even after today 70% day. Turkey day may be better than Xmas; or it may make for a more giving Xmas. Either or is fine by me. Hehe. Adios. Matt

Diamant stretch film is an excellent alternative to PVC film as it does not allow for the migration of harmful agents between the film and the food. Currently, PVC stretch film food wrap products contain Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC), a compound found to be harmful for human consumption and to the environment. In North America, legislation is being considered to limit the use of PVC products. The State of New York has already introduced restrictions on the use of PVC in the food wrap industry.
DiamantTM film has received the ECO logo certified by the Environmental Choice(M) Program. The Environmental Choice(M) Program is North America's leading benchmark of environmentally responsible products and services. Diamant has successfully met the criteria for both the environmental and performance standards.
BIO-PLASTICS INC. a wholly owned subsidiary of Diamant Art Corporation was formed to develop and acquire new products and technologies for the manufacturing of totally BIO-Degradable products.
Plastic food wrappers are poisonous under certain conditions. When people use electric heaters to process food wrapped in either PVC, or PVCD and PE films, contaminated elements detrimental to human health leak out. For further information please go to the following link http://english.people.com.cn/200510/23/eng20051023_216231.html.
The Company believes they possess the only economically viable polystyrene alternative to PVC stretch film for the North American food wrap industry.
Diamant Art Corporation, through its wholly owned subsidiary Diamant Film Inc., has secured a ten-year agreement with Diamant Plastics Corporation for the exclusive marketing and distribution rights in the United States, Territory of the People's Republic of China, Canada, Mexico and the Bahamas to Diamant(TM) film, a non-PVC food stretch film.
Board of directors have approved the immediate formation of a wholly owned subsidiary at Presidential Holdings, Inc offices located in the state of Florida, U.S.A, in anticipation of working with the U.S military for the introduction of DIAMANT FILM.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/usatoday/20051117/bs_usatoday/engineerduponthidf actsaboutpapercoating

DIAAF has just begun imo!

former engineer for the DuPont company has accused his ex-employer of concealing test results almost two decades ago that showed toxic chemicals leaching out of a paper coating used to give grease resistance to microwave popcorn bags, fast food and candy wrappers, and pizza box liners.
The statements Wednesday by chemical engineer Glenn Evers come a week before the Environmental Protection Agency is expected to announce what fines it will levy against DuPont for withholding information about tests involving a similar chemical used in making non-stick coatings.

When ingested, these chemicals break down into perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a chemical that an EPA expert panel this year found to be a likely human carcinogen. PFOA has been found in the blood of more than 95% of Americans, several studies have shows.

At a briefing arranged by the watchdog Environmental Working Group, Evers said that in 1987, DuPont scientists were testing two potential products to see how much perfluorinated chemical leaches out when they are exposed to water and heat, as they are when used to wrap hot foods.

The scientists used the company's widely used Zonyl RP grease-resistant coating as a benchmark because it was supposed to leach out the chemicals at a rate of 0.2 parts per million or less. But when the tests results came back, Evers said, they showed that the popular product leached out at 0.62 parts per million, three times the amount allowed by the Food and Drug Administration.

The two products tested were never put on the market for unrelated reasons, but Zonyl RP is still in use.

"People were shocked," Evers said, calling it an "Oh, my God" finding. But when he tried to tell company executives that they had to notify the FDA, he was told they were working on it, he says.

Neither customers nor the FDA were ever alerted, he says.

Evers lost his job at DuPont in 2002 due to a restructuring. He has since worked as a consultant to the paper industry. He says he came forward because "my personal convictions do not allow me to not tell what I know. I've thought and prayed hard about this."

Evers' appearance and internal company documents sent to government agencies by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) comes days before the EPA is expected to announce the amount of fines it will levy against Delaware-based DuPont for failing to report the results of tests that found PFOA in umbilical cord blood taken from the children of employees. The maximum possible fine is $313 million.

In a statement, DuPont said "Allegations that food-contact paper made with DuPont materials contain unsafe levels of PFOA (C are false."

EWG staff toxicologist Tim Kropp agrees that there is no PFOA in the treated paper. It's only after the perfluorinated chemical is ingested that it breaks down into PFOA in the body, he said.

DuPont said its products are safe and that it "has always complied with all FDA regulations and standards regarding these products."

Papers: DuPont Hid Chemical Risk Studies

Email this story

Printer friendly format

By JOHN HEILPRIN
Associated Press Writer

November 16, 2005, 10:38 PM EST

WASHINGTON -- DuPont Co. hid studies showing the risks of a Teflon-related chemical used to line candy wrappers, pizza boxes, microwave popcorn bags and hundreds of other food containers, according to internal company documents and a former employee.

The chemical Zonyl can rub off the liner and get into food. Once in a person's body, it can break down into perfluorooctanoic acid and its salts, known as PFOA, a related chemical used in the making of Teflon-coated cookware.
The Environmental Protection Agency has been trying to decide whether to classify PFOA as a "likely" human carcinogen. The Food and Drug Administration, in a letter released Wednesday evening by DuPont, said it was continuing to monitor the safety of PFOA chemicals in food.

The DuPont documents were made public Wednesday by the Environmental Working Group, a research and advocacy organization.

At the same time, a former DuPont chemical engineer, Glenn Evers, told reporters at a news conference at EWG's office that the company long suppressed its studies on the chemical.

"They are toxic," Evers said of the PFOA chemicals. "They get into human blood. And they are also in every one of you. Your loved ones, your fellow citizens."

From 1981 to 2002, Evers helped DuPont develop new products. He lost his job in 2002 in what DuPont described as a company restructuring.

Evers had a different view: "It is my belief DuPont pushed me out of the company" because he started raising concerns about the chemicals' safety.

Evers said he decided to talk publicly about the PFOA problem after filing a civil suit against DuPont this month in a Delaware court. Evers' aim is mainly to "set the record straight" about the chemical and his own career, said Herb Feuerhake, Evers' lawyer.

But Evers said he also hoped to influence the outcome of an EPA hearing later this month on whether DuPont had withheld from EPA the study on PFOA and possible birth defects. The company could be fined millions of dollars.

After EWG tracked down Evers -- who had provided expert, unpaid testimony in two lawsuits against DuPont -- the 47-year-old Delaware resident said he talked it over with his priest, who told him, "`You can't dance with the devil.'"

DuPont denied allegations that PFOA posed a health risk, saying the Food and Drug Administration had approved the products for consumers.

"These products are safe for consumer use," the company said in a statement. "FDA has approved these materials for consumer use since the late 1960s, and DuPont has always complied with all FDA regulations and standards regarding these products."

The company said Evers "had little if any direct involvement in PFOA issues while employed at DuPont. ... Evers expressed a wide range of personal opinions that are inaccurate, counter to FDA's findings, and which DuPont strongly disputes."

The environmental group on Wednesday gave the FDA and the EPA copies of DuPont-sponsored internal studies indicating higher dangers from Zonyl than the government knew, including its ability to migrate into the food.

One of the documents, a 1987 memo, cites laboratory tests showing the chemical came off paper coating and leached into foods at levels three times higher than the FDA limit set in 1967. Another document, a 1973 Dupont study in which rats and dogs were fed Zonyl for 90 days, said both types of animals had anemia and damage to their kidneys and livers; the dogs had higher cholesterol levels.

"What makes this worse is that DuPont knew at that time that Zonyl breakdown-products, such as PFOA, in food were very persistent in the environment and were contaminating human blood, including the fetal cord blood of babies born to DuPont female employees," EWG Senior Vice President Richard Wiles wrote to FDA and EPA officials.

Wiles asked the agencies to determine whether DuPont should be penalized for withholding the studies. Last year, based on another DuPont document that the environmental group obtained, EPA alleged the company had repeatedly failed over a 20-year period to submit required data about PFOA. The document referred to a study that suggested possible links between PFOA and birth defects in infants.

EPA spokeswoman Eryn Witcher said Wednesday the agency "has an extensive effort under way to determine the sources of PFOA, how the public is being exposed, and whether these exposures pose a potential health risk."

Evers' decision to go public with his concerns may have already had an impact.

In August, he told a Mississippi court that all three of DuPont's U.S. plants were releasing "massive amounts" of dioxin -- a class of organic chemicals that EPA studies have shown pose a possible cancer risk in humans. In that case, an oyster fisherman who claimed dioxin from a DuPont plant caused his rare blood cancer was awarded $14 million in actual damages and his wife received $1.5 million.

He also testified last year in a West Virginia case in which DuPont agreed to a $107.6 million settlement of a class-action suit. Residents around a plant near Parkersburg, W.Va., had said that PFOA contaminated their drinking water supplies. DuPont also remains the target of another class-action suit over PFOA seeking $5 billion.

Ex-Employee Calls DuPont Negligent

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/11/16/AR2005111602066.html?nav=rss_business

By Juliet Eilperin
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, November 17, 2005; Page A10

A former DuPont Co. engineer charged yesterday that the chemical giant deliberately ignored evidence that its grease-resistant coating on paper products may have been entering consumers' blood at levels that exceeded the federal health standard.

Glenn Evers, who worked at DuPont for 22 years before being laid off in 2002, told reporters that he became concerned about the health effects of a perfluorinated chemical used for food packaging in 1987 after company tests showed it was dissolving into wet paper at much higher levels than the Food and Drug Administration approved in the 1960s.

When the paper coating is dissolved and absorbed into the human body, it breaks down into perfluorooctanoic acid, the same chemical compound used to make Teflon. The Environmental Protection Agency's independent science advisory board will soon decide whether this compound, also known as PFOA or C-8, should be identified as a "likely human carcinogen."

The agency is also slated to decide later this month how much to fine DuPont for failing to report for more than 20 years' possible health effects associated with PFOA, a charge the company denies. The government could impose a fine as high as $313 million.

Evers said that in 1987 he told his boss, " 'We've got a real problem.' He said, 'Don't worry about it, we're working on it.' " Evers added: "We have a chemical that is bioaccumulating in every man, woman and child in America. DuPont stayed in the market strictly to make a buck."

DuPont has denied Evers's allegations, noting he recently filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the company, which it is contesting.

"These products are safe for consumer use," said DuPont spokesman R. Clifton Webb. "The Food and Drug Administration has researched this very question using state-of-the-art methodology and the most sensitive measurements scientifically possible, and the agency continues to approve these products as safe for consumer use."

Webb said that even though Evers is not an authority on PFOA, he testified in a West Virginia class-action suit that charged DuPont failed to inform residents near a company plant that PFOA had entered local drinking water supplies. The company has since settled the suit.

Evers said he was disturbed his company was selling the paper coating but had no ability to influence his superiors' decisions. He also said he was laid off because "I became a troublemaker."

EPA spokeswoman Eryn Witcher said she could not comment on Evers's allegations or the upcoming decisions on fines but said the agency is assessing whether the coating could harm consumers' health.

"EPA has an extensive effort underway to determine the sources of PFOA, how the public is being exposed, and whether these exposures pose a potential health risk," Witcher said.
