It means it's gonna open higher then it closed.

If the closing price was $10 at 4:00 PM eastern Monday...and it opens at $12 at 9:30 AM eastern on Tusday, it would be considerd gapping up $2.

Same thing if it opended $2 lower...it would be called gapping down $2.

If a stock is up Pre-Market before the opening bell, you can tell it's gonna gap up.

a "gap" occurs when there is a notable difference between the closing price of one day, and the opening price of the day that follows.

to be more strict, the high of previous day is lower than the low of the following day (gap up), or the low of the previous day is higher than the high of the following day (gap down).
