The feds cracked down yesterday on 35 little-known companies whose stocks have been pumped up by spam e-mails, suspending trading.
The Securities and Exchange Commission's Operation Spamalot targeted the companies – including one profiled in a recent investigation by the Daily News' Your Money section – because of potentially fraudulent spam campaigns touting their stock.
"By suspending trading ... we are eliminating the market for these spammers and promoters whose Internet boiler rooms deceive and defraud the public," said Bruce Karpati, regional director for the SEC's New York office.
An estimated 100 million e-mails per week are sent out regarding the stocks, which don't trade on exchanges. Messages such as "Ready to Explode," "Ride the Bull" and "Fast Money" can spark dramatic spikes in trading and stock prices before the spamming stops and investors lose their money, the SEC said.
The suspensions will remain in effect through March 21.
Karpati said it was unclear what role, if any, the companies had in the spam campaigns.
One of the companies whose trading was suspended, Goldmark Industries, saw its share price quadruple to 38 cents just after Christmas on the strength of a spam campaign. But, as Your Money reported in January, the price quickly fell back to its previous range.

Rb, I wouldn't be so sure. I am pretty sure that all of the companies will default to the grey sheets unless they have their fiancials in order and are able to get a market maker to stick their neck out for them to get quoted back on the pinks.

I hope they follow the paper trail and lock these guys up. They somehow got their hands on the email addresses of all TD Ameritrade customers and spam them endlessly with these pink sheet pumps.
