South Korean navy ship sinking, North suspected: report

Reuters
Friday, March 26, 2010; 12:27 PM

Cho Mee-young and Kim Miyoung

SEOUL (Reuters) - A South Korean naval ship was sinking on Friday after possibly being hit by a North Korean torpedo and several sailors were killed, South Korean media reported.

A South Korean warship later fired at an unidentified vessel toward the north, indicating a possible attack, and the South's presidential Blue House was holding an emergency security meeting, the Yonhap news agency said.

"The ship appears to have begun sinking after an explosion at the rear of the ship," Yonhap quoted the South Korean Navy saying in a statement. "We have been unable to find the exact cause of the incident as of this moment."

The incident comes as destitute North Korea is facing pressure to end its year-long boycott of international nuclear disarmament talks, where it can win aid to prop up its broken economy in exchange for reducing the security threat it poses.

The North often rattles sabers ahead of major diplomatic meetings as a way to alarm its dialogue partners in the hope that they would be more willing to make concessions.

South Korea's YTN TV network said the government was investigating whether the sinking was due to a torpedo attack.

But the network also quoted a government source saying it was unclear yet whether the incident was related to North Korea.

"We are currently focusing on rescuing people," the source said.

The incident took place near a disputed Yellow Sea maritime border off the west coast of the peninsula that was the scene of two deadly naval fights between the rival Koreas in the past decade.

Yonhap said the 1,500-ton ship with 104 crew aboard began sinking around 9:45 p.m. (0845 EDT)

Local media reports said at least 59 South Korean sailors survived the attack and an unknown number appeared to have been killed or were missing. A rescue operation was under way.

Navies from the rival Koreas exchanged gunfire for the first time in seven years in Yellow Sea waters in November, damaging vessels on both sides.

North Korea in recent weeks has said it was bolstering its defenses in response to joint South Korean-U.S. military drills that were held this month.

NKorea accuses US, SKorea of disturbing border

North Korea warned the U.S. and South Korea of "unpredictable incidents" Monday after it says the allied nations have been disturbing security at a buffer zone bisecting the peninsula.

If the U.S. and the South Korean authorities persist in their wrong acts to misuse the DMZ for the inter-Korean confrontation despite our warnings, these will entail unpredictable incidents including the loss of human lives in this area for which the U.S. side will be wholly to blame," the statement said.

Thank you President Obama for continuing on the trend to make the dollar worthless. We're getting there, if we get into another war.

Thank You President Obama for showing your weakness to the world as commander-in-chief.

i don't see the weakness you are speaking of. This incident is typical Kim Jong Il BS.

the weakness of the dollar is relative to the weakness of other currencies which are in the same trouble we are. Even the ruskkies have been doing worse than US.

except China. and China is unique problem unto themselves.
The China problem has been building for twenty years.

i thought the traditioanl mantra is that war is good for business.

South Korean ship sunk by crack squad of 'human torpedoes'
A South Korean warship was destroyed by an elite North Korean suicide squad of 'human torpedoes' on the express orders of the regime's leader, Kim Jong-il, according to military intelligence reports.

Officials in military intelligence say they warned the government earlier this year that North Korea was preparing a suicide-squad submarine attack on a South Korean ship.

"Military intelligence made the report to the Blue House [the presidential office] and to the Defence Ministry immediately after the sinking of the Cheonan that it was clearly the work of North Korea's military," a military source said.

"North Korean submarines are all armed with heavy torpedoes with 200kg warheads," the source said.

Experts who examined the ship, which sank in the Yellow Sea, say that the blast happened outside the vessel's hull, ruling out the possibility of an accident.

North Korean officials who have defected to South Korea but still have contact with North Korean military sources say they have been told that the attack was carried out on the orders of Mr Kim and involved a unit of 13 specially trained commandos and modified midget submarines.

The submarines were manoeuvred close to their target before being detonated, probably along with their crews. Alternatively, the attackers may have used timed charges.

Strange sentence grouping, were they specially trained midget commandos? TLC's new fall program, Little People, Explosive World.

Why is nobody talking about this in the news. I know there are big stories going on, but if NK really did do this .....that is an act of war. Its always ok for NK to behave like this for some reason. Everyone is getting weak.

South Korea doesn't want it Cow. It was their ship and they are the ones who will have to face the NK artillery if war does break out.

Not saying that makes it ok but shouldn't they be the deciding vote on this?

I never said they shouldnt be the deciding vote, but we seem to live in this society where we brush off things like this....very passive. The UN is worthless as well. Iran is telling us they are going to wipe israel off the map, building up their navy, threatening our ally, I mean cmon.

South Korean defense chief confirms explosive chemical found in sunken ship's wreckage

Associated Press
SEOUL, South Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea's defense minister confirmed Monday that traces of an explosive chemical substance used to make torpedoes were found in the wreckage of a naval ship that sank near the border with North Korea.

The 1,200-ton Cheonan went down in the Yellow Sea on March 26 after an explosion tore through the frigate. Fifty-eight sailors were rescued, but 46 were killed. Seoul has not directly blamed North Korea for the sinking, and Pyongyang has denied involvement. However, suspicion has focused on the North, given its history of provocations and attacks.

South Korean Defense Minister Kim Tae-young said earlier that an initial investigation indicated that a torpedo was likely to blame for the disaster. On Monday, he confirmed media reports that traces of a high explosive were found on the ship's wreckage.

"It's true that RDX, a chemical substance used in making torpedoes, has been detected," he told reporters. "The possibility of a torpedo (attack) has increased, but it's too early to say anything."

The explosive material was detected on the ship's smokestack and in samples of sand from the site, said joint investigation team spokesman Rear Adm. Moon Byung-ok.

"Mines use RDX as well as torpedoes so we need to investigate further to determine which was responsible," he said.

RDX, or research department explosive, is a powerful high explosive often mixed with other explosives such as TNT or TORPEX, and has been widely used since World War II by all countries for military and industrial purposes, Kim said.

The multinational investigation team is analyzing aluminum pieces salvaged from the wreckage to determine whether they are a part of the ship or a torpedo, Kim said.

"It is not easy to tie the debris to weapons like torpedoes because information on other countries' weapons systems is not readily available," he said.

Reports say investigation results are expected within weeks, but officials have said there is no deadline.

The two Koreas remain locked in a state of war because their three-year conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty, in 1953.

North Korean artillery sank a South Korean ship in 1967, killing 39 sailors, and their navies have fought three more bloody skirmishes off the west coast since 1999.

Pyongyang also is suspected in a 1983 bombing in Burma that narrowly missed killing then-South Korean President Chun Doo-hwan but left 21 others dead, as well as for the 1987 bombing of a South Korean airliner that killed 115 people on board.

I have been to South Korea and I saw just 20' feet away from the North border, that is serious sheet down there. The north gaurds have their guns up if anyone comes close, the south gaurds do the same automatically. That border is one big Mexican stand off with out the Mexicans. something will give at some point.

For anyone that has an issue with that "mexican" referance, F.U. I am in Chile right now, don't speak a lick of Spanish, and I have no problem with them in our country, granted I would like legally. Even here the wage is not like ours but they are happy, the people I have been able to talk to. 12K a year buys a house 2 cars a motorcycle... life is good. USA, 75K a year buys you more debt, makes you think, me anyways.

(UPDATE)

Looks like things might be heating up soon. I know there is always rhetoric, but this is kind of an extreme situation. I cant even imagine how upset the South Korean families are over this who lost loved ones on that ship that was sunk.

The stock market would take a real hit if we have to get involved again anywhere in the world.

Would be a tough time for this to happen as fragile as the stock market is right now.

I just haven't seen this much activity at the military bases around here since the peaks of Iraq.

Hopefully summer manuvers early, but i doubt it.

Kim Jong il is crazy as a loon. but he's not stupid enough to not see that he can take advantage of our militarial global position which is spread thin...

i hope that we can take him out once and for all real qucik, but it needs to be based on a response that is easily verifiable. I don't care if we invent it or not as long as it looks good, but keep in mind that Iran wants us spread thinner, and China is just waiting to buy all the rest of our infrastructure that isn't bolted down, and even some that is...

the war drums are beating louder now:

S Korea takes punitive measures against DPRK over warship sinking
English.news.cn 2010-05-24 17:06:22by Kim Junghyun

SEOUL, May 24 (Xinhua) -- South Korea unveiled Monday a series of punitive measures against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) over the sinking of a South Korean naval warship.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak warned in a nationally televised speech that the country will resort to measures of self- defense if the DPRK further wages aggression, saying Pyongyang's alleged sinking of its 1,200-ton corvette Cheonan in late March resulted from a surprise torpedo attack.

"North Korea (DPRK) will pay a price corresponding to its provocative acts. I will continue to take stern measures to hold the North accountable," Lee said.

"From now on, the Republic of Korea (South Korea) will not tolerate any provocative act by the North and will maintain the principle of proactive deterrence. If our territorial waters, airspace or territory are violated, we will immediately exercise our right of self-defense," a grim-faced Lee said.

His strongly worded speech came after an international team of investigators announced their findings last week and blamed DPRK for sinking the warship which killed 46 sailors

South Korea lost track of four subs that they have been tracking. Wonder where the subs went?

http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/australian-news/7299302/south-korea-loses-track-of- norths-subs/

South Korea's military is trying to find four North Korean submarines that have disappeared from tracking screens in the East Sea.

Tensions are running high on the Korean peninsula after Pyongyang was blamed for sinking a South Korean warship.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency has quoted an unnamed military official as saying that four North Korean submarines have vanished from their screens.

The 300-tonne Sang-O class submarines are part of Pyongyang's 40-strong fleet.

They disappeared after leaving their base in the country's north-east two days ago.

The South Korean and United States militaries are preparing to hold anti-submarine drills near the site of the sinking of the Cheonan.

Opening a new front there would be a bitter pill for America to take. However if you think SK will start a war you might as say we go to war. They could not win the last time they fought the north and I don't see much of a change now.

So North Korea SINKS a South Korean ship and we just ignore it like it never happened.

Israel boards a hostile ship and we got protests in cities all over the world crying over Hezbollah.
