Just in case anyone here has kids or you yourself access the web on your cell. There is a scam that we found on our cell bill. My son was sent a text message he didn't open. if you don't open the message and reply that your not interested then they charge you $9.99. I don't see how any of this is legal. We got the credit on our acount and a block on their phones that is supposed to filter these out but not 100%.

Legal or not, if they hit 10,000 (they probably hit that many times ten or twenty each day) people a day and only 98% of them open and check it out, then stop it, that's about $2000 a day they collect, unless the credit card companies do something about it.

I had a bogus charge hit my credit card recently. it took months and lots of effort and dozens of letters and forms filled out to get back my $39.95. It was finally traced to a Swiss bank acting on behalf of some third world African bank and getting any information out of a Swiss bank is darned near impossible. I spent more value in time than that the $39.95 and I suspect that is what a lot of people wouldn't do.

was this scam perpetrated by the cell phone company?

(thats' a rhetorical question)

call your cell phone company and tell them they are either being used by scammmers, or participating actively in a scam...

suggest that the State Attorney General should be notified...

then call your state attorney general's office anyway..

No it's a third party that in turn bills the cell company, I'm sure they mark it up though. I will do the attornet general thing....... maybe I can find an email address for that. Thanks for the idea.

If you live where your local newspaper has an advocate for the public, you might want to alert that person, so it could be made public in the paper.

you might say this directly to them, it is true for me:

i used to be along-term ATT shareholder and customer..

one day i had a billing problem.

not the first time by a longshot, only this time? they refused to resolve it.

i became an ex-customer and ex-shareholder within two months.

they collapsed about two years later. the ATT today is not the ATT then.

Yes, what goes by the name of AT&T now is really Southwestern Bell, which acquired the name when they bought the failed AT&T.

I've had a few of these over the past month.
I was even charged for a couple I never opened.
One call to my carrier took care of it.
They traced the calls to a number in New Jersey
(why doesn't that surprise me!) and they put a
block on it for same.
No Mas.
