my best fishing trip....
a buddy of mine and i took my chrysler 23' to the gulf stream out of hatteras...i think it was 54 miles that day...
this isn't the best boat for that far off, but it was the BEST trolling boat i've ever been on...some boats make just the right wake/or noise or somehting to bring up the fish, and this one never let us down...
any way we got on a mahi mahi school that was huge...at least 50 we could see at any time, and they were running just under 10lbs...
we hooked the first two on ballyhoo, and one of'em was a 40 lb penn, so after i saw it was hooked good i left in the water on the leader, and we got out the jerk jiggers...

these are three inch aluminum, tubes with a lead head and three trebble hooks on them...you drop it straight down and just jerk real hard, they "dance" like a frightened minnow...you use a 15lb line MAX and a stiff-tipped spinning rod to make 'em work right....

anyway we could see the school right under us cuz they won't leave the hooked fish.....

we could watch it all....mahi mahi are fast and colorful....

problem is they are more insane once you get 'em in the boat...

ever have a ten pound fish that could flip five feet straight up from laying on the deck? with two razor sharp trebble hooks to spare?

LOL we were shredded over and over but we got our limit...10 each...

I could go for a good dorado or mahi steak right about now. mmm.

Here's a bluefish story for ya. A buddy and I went out off the coast of Jersey fishin' for blue's with a group of our friends. Well, anyways, we were out there from dawn til dusk. My buddy didn't take any tanning lotion with him and had his shirt off all day. Well let me tell ya, he burns pretty easy. LOL. He looked like a lobster by early afternoon. Well we found a school of blues and we came home with a ton.

Well, it turned out that my buddy had never been on a boat before and sure enough he got seasick. He sure made some great chum!

Go figure, he's now in the Marine's on a boat somewhere.

I'm just waiting for the ice to clear, and weather to warm up a bit before I de-winterize my boat. I'm starting to get the fever.

It was freakin cold on one occasion this year. The temperature was -15 before the start of the Crappie Derby this year. Man that was cold. After the wind chill was figured in, I beleive it was about -25

Once I was swallowed by a whale, was gone from home for 2 days, but my wife wouldn't believe my story.

No one ever believes me.

Can't figure out why?

Oh, and I was once abducted by an alien who looked like a fish. Was gone for 3 days that time.

For fishermen in Florida:

Subject: Beware of Gators

The Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife is advising fishermen, hikers, motorcycle riders, hunters, and golfers to take precautions and keep alert for alligators while in Florida counties of Osceola, Polk, Manatee, Orange and Dade.

They advise people to wear noise-producing devices such as little bells on their clothing, to alert, but not startle the alligators unexpectedly. They also advise carring of pepper spray in case of an encounter with an alligator.

It is also a good idea to watch for fresh signs of alligator activity.

People should recognize the difference between the droppings of small young alligators and large adult alligators.

Young alligator droppings are smaller and contain fish bones and possibly bird feathers.

Adult alligators droppings have little bells in them and smell like pepper spray.

I went fishing for alligators at Fort Stewert GA. Use a kemlite on heavy line like 50 lb spider wire at night. I used to go fishing every night. I took a 7 year old and the game warden stopped buy. He ask the 7 year old what we were doing. He said trying to catch a gator. The sign beside me on a tree said $25,000 fine for catching them. He only said it's amazing how honest kids are. Use the spider wire or a throw net. Let the little ones go when they start squelling. Momma will have your ass.

.. I was working the back deck on a single rigged dragger [ shrimp and incidental bottom fish ] off the Washington coast .The boat was an 82 footer and we could drag one big net.
It was in the early seventies and we did'nt have the kind of bottom sounding electronics we have today. The Skipper did have two ancient paper sonars, that he was very good at operating.
Well anyway, we were picking up gear when all of the sudden the boat gave us one hell of a shudder..The winches behaved in a way I had never seen before. Then the boat began to pick up speed going astern turning to starboard. The rig man hallard clear the back deck, which believe me I did.

..Then he and I went to our winch stations. He grabbed his winch break handle I grabbed the other winch brake handle and we went into free spool. This is not the time to get a birds nest in the cable...There are two winches.

We pulled off the life saving task flawlessly.
We got most of the gear back minus one door [[ spreader ].The net was torn to pieces.

..The skipper told us on the way back to port, that the Navy would never pay us back for the net.

..He also said he did'nt know any place he could sell a submarine. Needless to say my crew share was mighty lousy for the trip...True story

glassman...I had to make a solo dive at night off of my tuna boat,in moderate weather, to cut a cargo net out of my wheel. All kinds of traffic that night in the shipping lane's.. I thought it would better to cut the damn net out than take a chance on getting rammed..Funny thing was how tall the transom looked on my 36 footer as I hauled myself up that knotted stern line.

OK she reminded me of another one...

We were down visiting my grandparents at Ft. Myers beach. My grandad was still pretty active then. He took us across to Sanibel to hunt for shells. I wasn't really into it, but i went along. He brought along these long crab tongs so he wouldn't have to bend over as far. After a while he gives yell for me to come over and catch this sting-ray for him. He was sure he would be too slow to grab it. He hated 'em cuz he got hit by them twice before. (he wouldn't just cut the line, he had to try to get the hook back, and they have these barbs along the tail that are covered with slime and can get you pretty sick.) So i say sure i can catch it no problem. He hands me the tongs and i reach down and grab it. This thing was pretty strong and i never tried to grab a fish with tongs before so i had aholt pretty hard. Just about the time i get it out of the water? my arm starts dancin' on it's own....it ssssssSHOCKED me....and i couldn't let go, it finally slipped out by writhing so hard....i'd never heard of anything like this 'cept for electric eels, and i was darn sure they are freshwater Amazon...not Sanibel island...

so when we got home we looked it up and shonuff...i had got holta one o'these...and it got holta me too...

Torpedo Ray

http://www.marinelife-explorer.com/specieswebpages/atlantictorpedoray.html

i was just glad he hadn't grabbed it... we were wading a good 1/4 mile from the shore and the boat, and i don't know if i coulda got him back quick enough if he had a heart attack....he was in his 70's

i still don't know for sure if he KNEW it would shock me or not...he did laugh pretty hard... [Big Grin]

I was about 15, fishing with a friend at a local State Park. Anyways, it was the beginning of trout season and the place we were fishing was packed with people. There were these two Asian/Chinese guys across the cove from us. The one was fly fishing, while the other was walking around doing who knows what. Well, the guy flyfishing was casting again, and the other fella decided to walk about 15-20 feet behind him.

Guesss what happens next. This oriental that was walking walking around started flipping out, screaming, etc. The guy ended up getting the fly hooked right in his neck. It was one of the funniest things to watch. They both left shortly after that. It was great.

Now, here's my story that hooked me on fishing.

My friend and I decided to go fishing for smallmouths when I as about 22. So we took his jon boat + trolling motor headed off. We were catching some pretty fat bass at the time. Well, he casted out and BAM!, a bass hit his lure as soon as it hit the water. He tried setting the hook, but he yanked so hard that the hook didn't have a chance to set. I had about .0001 seconds to move out of the path of the flying lure coming at my head. All I had time to do was lift my hands about a few inches, and partially turn my head. All of a sudden, Whack!! The dang rapala with excalibur treble hooks slapped me upside the side of the face. The first treble hook only hooked one tip of the barb just above my eyebrow. I was able to pull that out in the boat.

The other treble hook decided to bury two barbs in my cheek. I couldn't help but laugh. My buddy almost crapped his pants because he was scared for his life at that moment. He was also freaked out because he thought I might have lost an eye, he told me that later at the ER.

Well, he settled down and we went back to load up his boat. I tried pulling out the burried treble hook, but it was stuck. We were at a campground and there were some EMS people on the bank. They looked at it and at least were able to cut the lure off of my face at the treble, but I still had two barbs stuck in my cheek.

I asked them to just pop the barbs through my cheek or pull them out, but they were afraid to, so I ended up having to go to the ER where the Doc was able to work the treble hook out. The best part about the whole incident was that my buddy took a picture of me with the lure stuck in my face, the only time I got mad during this ordeal was when he told me that the pictures were underdeveloped when he got them back. Another strange thing was that I didn't feel any pain or any unpleasant feeling during this whole ordeal. I'm not sure if there are any nerves in our cheeks or what?

Another fish story I guess.

I cought 4 fish at the same time on one hook, while deep sea fishing. I call it hitch hiking...The hook was a shrimp fly. I cought a rock bass on the fly, then a Ling Cod grabbed the bass, then another Ling Cod bit down on the tail of the first Ling Cod, and as I was bringing up my line, another Ling Cod was swimming just beneath the last Ling Cod and I netted the whole bunch of um.

While working in Wrangell Alaska, I had a chance to go out with some of the locals to do some halibut fishing. We had a nice one hauled up close and had just given it a lead tranquilizer, with three of us struggling to pull it in, we suddenly fell back as the fish grew 50% lighter. A group of Orcas had been swimming about a quarter mile off, when one decided a free snack was in order. One bite was enough to shear off half of that 100+ lb. fish.
All the fishing I did up there seemed to be a contest weather I got the trout or the bears got it, weather I got the salmon or the eagles/seals got it, or I got the halibut or the orcas got it. Never knew fishing was so competitive till I fished Alaska.
