Hello,

I have just started to do stocks. I joined scottrade the last week and have just now sent them some money to get started with the stocks. I'm still reading and learning everything.

Scottrade seems good to me, I like the web they have.

I also purchased a few books from Amazon that was recommended here.

What does dd mean? and if anyone has any other good forums to visit I would love to know about them, I also am trying to read more about how to read a stock and learn to know when it is going to take off.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

ToppDogg

Just getting started.

Hi ToppDogg, welcome to the rest of your life. I dug up a couple post that will answer many questions you may have, I know some general things but I am still a novice. "Ric" is real knowledgable on tips on trading. Good luck and ask any questions you may have.

As I've said for months, almost since joining, WHY don't we have a "newbies thread/forum"? It is crazy to me that we--as a board--answer so many of the same questions over and over...

Another question for all of you. Does anyone use or recommend stock scanning software?

Thanks!

K-train and (from what I understand his mentor) da Dog are the masters at scanning for runners. You can prolly search and find a post re the main filters...if not, re-post, and I'll look it up...

for Candlestick charting you should read Steve Nison's books.. he is the guru of Candlesticks... all others are followers and just repeating what he already has written about...

The Candlestick Course by Steve Nison
www.candlecharts.com

As for stock scanning.. use the free technical search on www.smallcapcenter.com or if you can afford it or want to pay it get Metastock or use www.quotetracker.com .... another word of advice.. use Choicetrade over Scottrade

lol, just call me Tex, T-dog...I typed in that nick when i was thinking--as a newb-that I'd focus on Texas companies....ooops, my bad. Bigger world. btw? candles are cool, but your query re scanning? You aint got time to check the candles on a runner in pennyland...if you're interested in scanners? jmho...forget TA/FA, develop a quick trigger-finger. Entry AND exit.

Boom, in. Blast, out...

lol, Tex that is good information again. It sure seems like alot of people here do not like scottrade. Again I am new so I take that as good information, I was recommeded to scottrade from a local person and so far I have just used it for information as they will not have my check until Monday. I am looking into choicetrade and like the fact I can start with a e-check with them.

Thanks again everyone!

I've heard some good things about choicetrade.

btw, in case there is time? I keep a window (or another machine) open to Bigcharts.com, with these indicators ready to roll: BB, RSI, MACD and Moneyflow. Lottsa times folks post a tip, but then you look and MACD is heading down or money is leaving--or both. These, imo, are reasons to wait and see. You can click an option to keep your indicators loaded. Stockcharts.com seems to be a favorite, too.

Also, since you're brand new (I'm learning myself), I'd say don't play active runners for a while, unless you're willing to drop some dough like going out on the town. Once they're ticking up ya gotta buy quick and then babysit it--if your order doesn't fill, let it go and don't chase it...They can rise fast and drop fast--and there'll be another one. Then, as soon as you're in, set your sell price and be ready to hit "enter." iow, set a target exit BEFORE you buy.

My opinion? For quick orientation, read Machiavelli's posts to new traders and then follow a few of the vets who swing trade. I learned a lot watching Diana (realityinc) play TNOG...Lottsa good traders here, take your time to follow a few...

good luck, T-Dogg
