I am trying to network 2 computers on the net. Both run x/p. I build a crossover cable and plugged it into both computers. No I have no idea have to log the second on onto the net. I put this in the under .10 area because thats what I will pay for help.

double L...are you trying to hook them up in differant rooms??? if so the best way is wireless. you pick the main computer out & hook the router to it. it goes in order...cable modem (DSL or dial up same thing) into router, into main computer. the second computer gets a matching antenea & both can be on at the same time or at anytime. both are always logged in. it also allows both to use 1 printer or transfer files & no wires to run. total cost is about $150 & for about $60 you can add a thrid computer or up to 4 total. 1 can even be an Xbox or playstation but that takes a special plug in hardware at the game consol.

Not sure on the cross over line. You would have had a alot easier time just buying a $19 hub at Wal-mart and 2 network cables, actually one the hub usually has one cable included. XP would have pick it up automatically. All you would have to do is run Home networking and been finished with it.

Bill I think he was just trying to use a crossover line without the hub, wireless or not. Old time stuff there and not sure how XP would handle that.

i believe u can use your internet connection / networking wizard that is built into your control panel.. connect one computer to the internet via dialup and choose the setting "this computer is the host computer for other computers and shares its internet connection" and the second, connected by the crossover patch cable, needs to be set up to use the first computer as its internet connection. also via the wizard.
its not easy because its not efficient, but with a lil work you should be able to get it. maybe that helps, maybe not, i tried

As long as you have the XP CD those are easy to add back in, without the XP CD you will be SOL.
What betting babe is send you to do is basically ICS (internet connection sharing). You will have no problem finding information on this on microsofts site or the help files if you need to tweak it beyond the network wizard. Which seems to be all the time in my world.

If you're gonna go wireless, enabling 128-bit encryption and using MAC filtering also help keep your network safer. I've never set up a wireless network, so I cant help you with that...
