Cyberlux Announces 3 Year Revenue Projections

RESEARCH TRIANGLE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cyberlux Corporation, (OTCBB:CYBL - News), a leading provider of LED lighting solutions, announced today its revenue projection guidance for fiscal years 2007, 2008 and 2009, based on existing and future pipeline opportunities within existing retail relationships, continued penetration within governmental agencies, potential for OEM opportunities through its recent technology acquisitions, and current negotiations with prospective customers and partners. Mark Schmidt, Cyberlux President/COO said, "After a thorough study by our management staff of our present business and future business expectations, we have concluded that it is in the best interest of our shareholders for the Company to make public our estimated consolidated revenue projections for the next three fiscal years."

High-Efficiency, Nitride-Based Solid-State Lighting
Many industry experts are optimistic that solid-state lighting technology, particularly the light-emitting diode (LED), will revolutionize architectural lighting. However, problems with low lumen output and low system efficiency must be resolved before general illumination with LEDs can become a reality. Nearly two-thirds of the photons generated by an LED are trapped within the device where they are absorbed and converted into heat, reducing LED performance. Packaging LEDs into fixtures that are acceptable for architectural lighting is also a challenge. Packaging designs must consider the heat dissipation needs of LEDs while meeting architectural design requirements.

Researchers at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) and the Lighting Research Center (LRC) spent three years developing a high luminous efficacy white solid-state light source, through a U.S. Department of Energy project entitled "High-Efficiency Nitride-Based Solid-State Lighting." The project team explored the fundamental issues associated with nitride-based LEDs, the foundation of solid-state white light. The overall goal of the project was to achieve 200 lumens per watt (lm/W) from this light source, along with good color properties and long life.

Dr. Shuji Nakamura, who developed the world's first gallium nitride (GaN) LED, led the UCSB team, which focused on resonant cavity light-emitting structures. The LRC team, led by Director of Research Dr. N. Narendran, focused on challenges in packaging, testing and evaluation of nitride-based solid-state lighting. The LRC's work included:

developing the subcomponents necessary for packaging UCSB’s semiconductor light emitters
benchmarking the performance of current LED devices
defining specifications for the new light source through human factors studies
developing epoxy materials to encapsulate the semiconductor element (with Rensselaer's Chemistry group)
integrating UCSB's device with optics and electronic controls for general illumination applications
SUMMARY OF UCSB RESEARCH
The UCSB team initially pursued the development of blue gallium nitride (GaN)-based vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, as well as ultraviolet GaN-based LEDs. In Year 2, the emphasis shifted to resonant-cavity light-emitting diodes, also known as micro-cavity LEDs when extremely thin device cavities are fabricated. These devices have very directional emission and higher light extraction efficiency than conventional LEDs. Via the optimization of thin-film growth and refinement of device processing, UCSB decreased the total cavity thickness to less than 1 µm, such that micro-cavity effects were clearly observed and a light extraction efficiency of over 10% was reached. UCSB also began the development of photonic crystals for increased light extraction, in particular for so-called ‘guided modes’ which would otherwise propagate laterally in the device and be re-absorbed. Finally, UCSB pursued the growth of smooth, high-quality nonpolar a-plane and m-plane GaN films, as well as blue light-emitting diodes on these novel films. Initial nonpolar LEDs showed the expected behavior of negligible peak wavelength shift with increasing drive current. M-plane LEDs in particular show promise, as unpackaged devices had unsaturated optical output power of ~ 3 mW at 200 mA drive current.

SUMMARY OF LRC RESEARCH
At the conclusion of this project, the LRC demonstrated a new packaging method, called scattered photon extraction (SPE), that produced an average luminous flux and corresponding average efficacy of 90.7 lm and 36.3 lm/W, respectively, compared with 56.5 lm and 22.6 lm/W for a similar commercial white LED package. At low currents, the SPE package showed over 80 lm/W white light with chromaticity values very close to the blackbody locus. The SPE package showed an overall improvement of 61% for this particular comparison, exceeding the LRC’s third-year goal of 25% improvement. Human factors studies of light source form for general illumination showed that UCSB’s RCLEDs are best suited for downlight fixtures, in terms of comfort and visual clarity. Rensselaer’s Chemistry group developed new die encapsulant materials using silicone-epoxy resins. The devised materials show slower degradation and less yellowing than materials used in commercially available epoxy encapsulants. Finally, three years of life-testing to benchmark the performance of commercially available LEDs indicate that the single-die white LEDs tested will maintain 70% of their initial light output at 45,000 hours with only a small color shift over time. With the collected benchmarking data, the LRC has begun to develop a life prediction metric for white LEDs. Experiments showed that the LED degradation rate changes as a function of junction temperature depending on the source of increasing heat (drive current or ambient heat). The source of increasing heat also affects 5-mm and high-flux LEDs differently. Once a life predictor can be quantified, the LED life of a system can be estimated without long-term life testing — a significant benefit when developing new LED packages.

With all that I have read from the scientific community on where LED research will make its breakthroughs, this is it! Remember what the goal of Cyberlux here is. Not to reinvent the LED but how to make it more efficient.

I would assume that financing would be relatively easy to obtain on favorable terms if a company was going to save the world $25 billion dollasr a year, wouldn't you agree?

High-brightness LED market to grow to US$9 billion in 2011, says Strategies Unlimited

The high-brightness (HB) LED market will change from a slow-growth trend within the next one to three years and grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.7% to US$9 billion in 2011, according to market research firm Strategies Unlimited.

The market will see growth for the next three to five years driven by lighting, display backlights and automotive, while the mobile appliance sector will decline slowly, the firm indicated.

The LED lighting market will grow at around 38% per year, representing the highest of any HB LED application, and reach approximately US$1 billion in 2011, the firm noted. Although many applications for the segment use RGB LEDs today, white LEDs will increase to more than 60% of the lighting market by 2011, the firm added.

For the automotive sector, following the Lexus LS 600h that uses LEDs as the headlamp lighting source (available in spring 2007, using Nichia's LEDs), Audi will launch the Audi R8 later this year using LEDs from Lumileds and Osram Opto Semiconductors, while US-based car makers may launch models with LED headlamps in 2008, Strategies Unlimited said.

Mobile appliances, on the other hand, will gradually become less dominant among all HB LED applications in the next few years, with the value of the sector accounting for 48% of the HB LED applications in 2006, down from 57% in 2004, the firm said.

The HB LED market grew rather slowly with a 6% rise to US$4.2 billion in 2006 and the trend was heavily influenced by ongoing decline of the mobile phone market, Strategies Unlimited indicated.

The market will grow at a 12-15% CAGR in the next three years, the firm said.

Strategies Unlimited made a presentation at the recent Blue 2007 - A Solid State Lighting Suppliers conference in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

How one man showed them the light

How many people does it take to change the light bulb? One: Shuji Nakamura, inventor of so-called solid-state white lights made from light-emitting diodes, commonly known as LEDs.

In 1992, while working in the laboratory of an obscure Japanese chemical company, located on the smallest and least populated of the four main Japanese islands, this lone engineer triumphed where multinational research centers had failed. He created an LED that emitted dazzling blue light, the key step to mimicking sunlight itself.

When combined with a simple yellow phosphor coating, the result is a source of white light needing five times less power than the equivalent light bulb, lasting more than 10 times longer, and it produces any tone of white immediately — unlike today's low-energy fluorescent lights.

Nakamura's breakthrough is at the heart of a technological revolution that looks set literally to light up the world. Within a decade, LED-based lighting is likely to be a familiar feature in homes and offices, cutting fuel bills and greenhouse gas emissions.

Its effect on developing nations will be even more significant by bringing light to the 2 billion people for whom the setting of the sun means either being plunged into darkness or having to rely on oil lamps. High-efficiency LEDs running off stored solar power can keep the lights on until dawn.

Nakamura recently was awarded the second Millennium Technology Prize — the first winner being Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web.

But it could easily have never happened at all, as technology writer Bob Johnstone shows in this compelling account of Nakamura's story, packed with salutary lessons for would-be Edisons.

"Don't follow the pack" is one tip. Nakamura pursued a route no one else thought would work — although his reasons for doing so are instructive.

As Johnstone points out, blue LEDs had first been made in the early 1970s but were hopelessly faint. That prompted researchers to throw their efforts into other approaches.

As a lowly research engineer with Nichia Corp. in Anan, Japan, Nakamura took the view that if those researchers were now on the right track, he didn't have a chance of beating them — so he opted to stay with the material they had abandoned, known as gallium nitride.

It was not an argument that appealed to Nichia's president, who — perhaps understandably — ordered Nakamura to stop wasting the company's money and start work on surefire products.

In the grand tradition of tales of geniuses versus plodders, Nakamura ignored the order from the boss and discovered a means of turning gallium nitride into LEDs emitting blue light 50 times brighter than that achieved by anyone else.

The initial response to Nakamura's claims was skepticism: Few thought so big a breakthrough could come from so small a company.

The first to recover from the shock was Cree Inc., a LED maker in Durham, N.C. Cree quickly sought a collaborative venture with Nichia. The response provides one of the many cultural insights of the story: "They were like, gaijin [foreigner] go home," one Cree executive told Johnstone.

Riled by the dismissive attitude, Cree then became the first of many to try poaching Nakamura. The sources of these offers give another intriguing cultural insight.

Whatever initial doubts there had been about Nakamura's brilliance, they soon evaporated as he followed up the blue LED with the first bright green and white LEDs and the blue laser — now at the heart of the Blu-ray video machines. Ten U.S. institutions tried to poach him, but only two offers came from Europe — and none at all from his home country.

In the end, Nakamura took up a professorship at UC Santa Barbara. Nichia responded by trying to sue him, alleging breach of nondisclosure agreements. The case was kicked out in 2002, by which time Nakamura had launched his own action against his former employer. It emerged that he had received just $200 for each patent granted on his products — whose sales topped $1.4 billion in 2001. Nakamura sought only about $17 million. He was ultimately awarded half that amount, which was swallowed up by legal fees.

In the end, Nakamura has something beyond price: a place alongside the likes of Edison as technologists who have changed our world.

But his story suggests that although it took just one person to change the light bulb, there is no shortage of people who came close to stopping him doing it.

Ontario joins trend to ban incandescent light bulbs.

Canada’s most populous province said this week it will phase out the sale of incandescent bulbs by 2012, part of a growing movement toward energy efficient lighting technologies such as light emitting diodes and compact fluorescent bulbs.


“If all incandescent light bulbs were replaced by compact fluorescents, we expect enough energy to be saved to power 600,000 homes,” said Sylvia Kovesfalvi, a spokesperson for the province of Ontario’s energy ministry, which said it was taking steps to begin drafting the necessary regulations.


While the province draws half its energy from nuclear power plants, phasing in more efficient lighting systems could reduce greenhouse gas emissions from conventional power plants, Ms. Kovesfalvi said.


“The intent is to ban the sale of inefficient lighting only where more efficient options are available and make sense,” said Ms. Kovesfalvi. She didn’t say when the ban would take effect or what milestones, if any, have been set.


Ontario is hardly alone. Australia announced in February that it plans to ban incandescent bulbs, and California is considering similar legislation.


Big corporations are joining the movement. Wal-Mart, for instance, aims to sell 100 million compact fluorescent bulbs -- the most common and more affordable type of energy-efficient bulb -- by the end of the year.


“The takeaway here is the transition has begun, and it’s going to be wide scale,” said Ron Pernick, principal and co-founder of cleantech research and publishing firm, Clean Edge. “There’s going to be opportunities for innovators in LED technologies and for current manufacturers in CFLs [compact fluorescent light bulbs].”


The combination of government bans and industry initiatives could make it possible for makers of efficient lighting technologies to ramp up manufacturing, Mr. Pernick said. LED lighting, the technology used to light the Pudong tower in Shanghai, has until now been too expensive for use in homes and businesses. But increased demand and production of LED lights, which use less electricity and emit light efficiently, could bring their price down, Mr. Pernick said.


It could also open doors for next generation technologies like those of Group IV Semiconductor, an Ottawa, Canada-based startup that’s developing light-emitters from semiconductor chips rather than filaments. These silicon-based light-emitters won’t be available for a few years, but they could be used to make longer-lasting light bulbs more cheaply, said CEO Stephen Naor.


Big light bulb manufacturers like General Electric and Philips, which invented compact fluorescent light bulbs in the 1980s, might also benefit in moving more of their energy-efficient product.

I would like it to drop a little more myself, with the charts this is showing a break through the bottom. A little more on the oversold and then the release of their fins to take the E off could make for a major play. Just my thoughts. Plan the plan and stick to the plan.

That is what I am saying all along.I am extremely surprised it has not been bought out yet.The patents along are worth from 20$M to as much as 500m$ per Engineer 30 year expert analyzethis.Check Cap below.

called TA, my guess is my #'s from the PR rep were off. o/s is 250,738,939 float 48,419,774 still high for real growth potential for long term but with enough volume and a decent revenue expectation this should be a good run... when??? lol

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., April 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Cyberlux Corporation, (OTC Bulletin Board: CYBL - News), a leading provider of LED lighting solutions, announced today that the Company has received orders for two BrightEye Visible and Covert Portable Illumination Systems from the National Guard Bureau. The BrightEye VaC Portable Illumination System is the latest product developed by Cyberlux to address the growing need for portable, battery-powered visible and covert lighting systems within most sectors of the United States Armed Forces.

The National Guard will initially use the two BrightEye systems in field exercises for Night Vision operations and Night Vision Goggle (NVG) training. Beyond these field exercises, the National Guard requires rapidly deployable portable covert and visible lighting systems for disaster response preparedness, border patrol support, homeland defense operations, and global military deployments. The National Guard provides each State with units trained and equipped to protect life and property, and provides the Nation with units trained, equipped and ready to defend the United States and its interests around the world.

The BrightEye VaC Portable Illumination System is designed as a portable visible and night-vision compatible illumination system for general mission lighting, force protection, maintenance lighting, expeditionary base protection, disaster first responders, and other rapidly deployable high- intensity lighting applications. Using advanced optics, advanced solid-state lighting technology, and light-weight battery power, all contained in an easily transportable wheeled case, the BrightEye system is capable of eliminating the space-consuming bulk, noise and energy consumption of the current generator-powered incandescent lighting systems. Unique to the marketplace, the BrightEye provides both visible white lighting and night- vision compatible covert lighting, capability not available in traditional lighting systems.

Cyberlux Receives Six-Figure Order from Major Home Improvement Retailer to Expand EverOn Distribution for Hurricane Season

(OTC Bulletin Board: CYBL - News), a leading provider of LED lighting solutions, announced today that it has received additional orders from its existing major Home Improvement retail customer in preparation for the 2007 Hurricane Season. With initial Hurricane Season orders in excess of $100,000, the retail customer will expand availability of the EverOn Multi-purpose Portable Lighting product to stores that serve the Hurricane Belt states.

EverOn is a portable battery powered lighting device that provides from 30 to 500 hours of light from one battery set, including 500 hours of a low, nightlight level light; 60 hours of a medium, room-filling light; and 30 hours of intensely bright white light.
