Digital Descriptor Systems, Inc., Homeland Security Specialist, Supports Findings Of Tom Kean Wednesday January 11, 1:34 pm ET Cites Serious Need To Secure Inbound Cargo With Tamper-Evident Technology
SEA GIRT, N.J., Jan. 11, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Former members of the 9/11 Commission, including former N. J. Governor Tom Kean, who was the committee's co-chair, recently leveled sharp criticism at the government's level of preparedness related to homeland security threats. Tony Shupin, CEO of Digital Descriptor Systems, Inc. (Other OTC:DDSI.PK - News), and its subsidiary CGM Applied Security Technologies, Inc., expressed agreement with this negative assessment of current security mandates for incoming cargo. Shupin believes more needs to be done to help ensure containers cannot be used to deploy dangerous contraband into the United States.
``Millions of containers enter our country each year and only a small percentage are physically inspected,'' said Shupin. ``In addition to dramatically increasing the sheer number of inspections, we must also make it easier and faster to spot a container that may have been subject to tampering.''
In addition to the need for redefinition and strengthening of governmental shipping security protocols, Shupin says a further effective remedy would be the expanded use of sophisticated, tamper-evident technology, including mandates for locking bars and tape.
Shupin's company is among those marketing a line of tamper-evident products that, in addition to packaging tapes, include label-type seals, pallet covers and steel locking bars, as well as cable and bolt seals and security bags. All, when used in conjunction with a shipping container, cannot be removed without leaving behind clear evidence that tampering has occurred. It is this evidence that can greatly reduce the likelihood of dangerous devices or substances being stowed away in shipping containers without being detected by authorities.
Currently, about five percent of overseas cargo being shipped into the United States is protected by tamper-evident products.
``Unfortunately, it's relatively easy for a trained individual to access an unguarded container, plant something we don't want entering this country, and then close it up again -- with no one noticing,'' Shupin added. ``But when tamper-evident technology enters the equation, if someone breaks in, they leave behind that vital, clearly visible tip-off that authorities and owners need.''
In the case of tamper-evident packaging tape, once it is applied to an item, it cannot be peeled off without easily discernable markings appearing on both the tape surface and the item being shipped. Tamper-evident technology, including packaging tape, is a mainstay of shippers dealing with electronics, clothing and pharmaceuticals.
Shupin is available to speak with journalists about a broad range of homeland security-related topics. To schedule an interview, contact Kurt Praschak at 973.992-7800, ext.289 or email kpraschak*cherenson.com.

Well, no. But obviously they are selling b/c they have increased sales revenue by 500%.
That tells me the product was always good. But now, they have fixed their sales and marketing dept.
Sometimes, the product is great, but internal politics, or the stupidity of people totally mess up the org chart and the success of the company's revenue centers.
They've obviously fixed something. I hope to see a slow steady progressive (trend) increase in sales and a reduction in cost of sales over the next two years.
Also, it's not a fluff pr b/c they got the brand recognition and association to someone of authority in Washington. That's huge- nobody else was mentioned there.
