Army Succeeds In First Rocket Launch From Rotary Wing UAV
Feb 08, 2005 (Defense Daily/Access Intelligence via COMTEX) -- In the first known successful rocket launch from a rotary wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), the Army's Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD) successfully fired four 2.75-inch rockets from the test bed Vigilante UAV, the directorate said. The Vigilante, designed by Advanced Technologies Inc. with a flight control system developed by Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC), used an L-3 Communications [LLL] 12DS electro-optical-infrared sensor and an Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center Structures Directorate-developed four-tube Hydra Universal Rail Launcher (HURL) 2.75-inch rocket launcher and a stores management system and launcher electronics assembly developed by Naval Sea Systems Command.
AATD announced the feat yesterday, which took place Dec. 13-14 at Yuma Proving Ground, Ariz. Data from Vigilante indicated the UAV remained stable and the flight control system made the corrections to accommodate the weapon recoil and blast effects.
The events represented other major milestones for Army aviation, including the fact that Vigilante was controlled by an airborne craft; the control station was installed aboard a UH-1 manned helicopter. Also, this was the first airborne launch from the HURL--a four-tube smart rocket launcher that attaches to the Hellfire rail and connects with the platform through Mil=Std 1760 and 1553 interfaces.
Initial HURL development was sponsored by the RAH-66 Comanche program, the Boeing [BA] Sikorsky [UTX] future helicopter program the Army cancelled a year ago.
