try uninstalling all versions of Java and then re-install....if it still throws the error, change this registry key as folows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\Allocat eCDRoms to 0 and then reboot. GL

start-> run and type regedit. Locate this key on the left side
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\Allocat eCDRoms

change the value to 0 close regedit and reboot....

This of course, is assuming your running XP....it's an erroneous security issue or so it would seem from the error "verify that the file exsists and that you can access it"

Also, check your java settings in IE under tools > internet options > advanced and scroll down about half way.

Here's an alternate method if you are not comfortable using regedit:

1) Go into your control panel.
2) Open up "Administrative Tools"
3) From here go to "Local Security Policy"
4) Open up "Local Policies" and from there "Security Options"
5) Now in the right hand side box, find the item that reads, "DEVICES: Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on user only"
6) Right click this item, and select properties
7) Change the bullet point from "Enable" to "Disable"
8) Close it all down, restart your PC

Ktrain I wouldn't fugg with the registry if you're unsure of what your doing. One wrong edit and you may not be able to reboot.

is this a new issue? .. was it working fine yesterday? .. if yes... did you instal any new hard wares or softwares? if no .. just try system restore.. it usually fixes most of these simple software glitches..

start- all programs - accessories - system tools -
system restore .

pick a couple of days back when things were workin fine (?). just follow the prompt

Ktrain,
a 0 (numerical zero) only in this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\Allocat eCDRoms

Or try the manual download of the Java runtime below:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

If you still have problems, PM me or email....I'll give you my phone # and walk you through it...

This is what I would do. If you have high speed it will go fast because you will need to download aroung 10MB. I would go to Microsoft website and download Internet Explorer 6 SP1. Here is the link and click on download on the upper right side. Save it on your desktop. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6

After that go to Control Panel and un-install Internet Explorer re-boot and double click your Internet Explorer file you have on your desktop. But will take around 10 min. If you have Dial-up this could take for ever. Let me know if it work.

Sounds like you already are getting some good advice, so my 2 cents may not help. Question: Did your existing JAVA quit working? Or are you downloading JAVA for the first time?
