Without "volume" purchases, you are going to constantly have difficulty finding "a decent price."
Sorry I can't offer more helpful buying advice. I would say, though, that if you can't compete on price with the large operations (which is probably the case) you have to try to compete in the "service" area.
I'd say "be honest" with your customers--I'm in a primarily service business, but I regularly tell my customers, "Go to XYZ company, they specialize in that and can get the job done for you a whole lot cheaper than I can." Customers really appreciate it, and while I don't make a sale that day, I gain a loyal customer who will call again later.
