Hi all, just wondering who's using wireless laptops on occasion, what brand, how the security/firewall does, and how it does for trading. Looking to get one so I can trade during the lecture hours at college! Thanks for any info (tax auditor said I could claim the thing next year too!)

if you already have a state of the art desktop--get an iPAQ--the memory is awesome now---and they are very versatile--even with a HP keyboard they are only half the price of a cheap laptop-- you can get them on E-bay for a great price

Hey cheesehead, I have a Dell Inspiron 1100 and it came with a wireless G card. The 1100 is one of the lower models of laptops but it seems Dells do pretty well.
As for a firewall, you'll probably have to install something of your own, like ZoneAlarm or something to keep people out.
But one thing is for sure, it comes in handy like MAD! Lol I do the same thing you do, take my laptop in and watch my streamer and trade while taking notes...haha . Nobody but us traders would understand such a thing.
If you have the money though, I would look at Toshiba's...IMO Toshiba Laptops are king of the hill.
Good luck finding a good one, let us know what you get when you get it!

Would you guys suggest going with the built in (centrino) wireless with the slower processor speed, or with a faster processor and a wireless card? Anyone using the centrino powered laptop? You guys suprised me with the quick responces---thanks all!!!

Heynow, I use a HPz5000 with bluetooth and 802.11g wireless. I use a Dlink wireless G router also. Router acts as a firewall, but I do use ZoneAlarm. i also use a program called AirSnare that watches and notifies me of activity on my wireless network. This is a must have program for banning freeloaders trying to surf on your bandwidth. It is a little bit hefty about 9lbs but kicks ass with any application I use. Using during trading hours to view while watching TV or otherwise away from my main computer. Battery time is decent, however I do have a spare battery. Nice size screen 17in with wide screen format. Check out the HPz3000 it is lighter and more compact but with less horsepower. Don't forget the bluetooth, works awesome with a wireless keyboard and mouse, up to 3ft away and automatic setup. OK good luck. Have any questions I would love to answer them. - Marty

Yeah for my apartment I use a Belkin Wireless G router, need to get that application you are talking about Marty...will come in handy. Thanks!
Nothin like sitting out in front of the big screen with a laptop on your lap, streamer streaming away, and a DVD playin over the surround sound....hehe

Marty, thanks for the links. Actually went and downloaded WinPCap libraries a few minutes ago already cause I got the error message in the beginning.
So I installed the libraries, installed the application again and now it's performing an illegal operation and crashes. I tried reinstalling the libraries and also reinstalling AirSnare...dunno what is going on..

Nice Marcidius, When I went to get the link for AirSnare I saw there was an update. Downloaded it and bam now I am getting illegal errors. Great just my luck. I guess the saying stands, "if it is not broken don't try to fix it". -

i would not suggest one that has Centrino. Centrino is over priced. let me tell u what centrino is actually Centrino = Pentium 4 Mobile Processor + Wireless capabilities.
Now if you find a laptop that has a regular Pentium 4M processor and its own built in wireless card, its just the same..except $200-$300 cheaper.
I have the Sony V505DX and really happy with it. Its FAST and only 4 pounds !

Correct me if I am wrong but Centrino systems do conserve considerable on power, which is Intels purpose for pushing the Centrino brand wireless - Longer battery time. - Marty

i currently am using a toshiba p-25-607. it has 802.11b and bluetooth, but what i like it for is the 17" monitor, the great graphics card, 2.8 ghz p-4, 512 memory, cd and dvd burner, 60 gig hd. tv tuner too.
the screen allows me to get lots of windows up at the same time. i now have it hooked up to a 17" lcd monitor so i have t screens running. also have a 160 gig external hd hooked to it. i also don't know all that much about computers, but i really like this. i had a stray current problem and toasted the memory and the mother board. toshiba fixed it under warranty and even paid the shipping both ways.
i also have a sony laptop i like as well with a usb wireless antenna. it is in my studio in case i want to keep an eye on my streamer on days when nothing requires close attention. my little ipaq pda is also wireless and good for travel, but i can't say i enjoy the tiny screen and the stylus input. an ibzt keyboard will help.

How do you see all that on the 60", the quality of the Toshiba video must be awesome? Is it clear? Toshiba is a fine notebook, but lacks any nail protection. -

I have an IBM Thinkpad T-23 (old 1.2 GHz machine) and just threw in a wireless network card. Laptop cost me 400 bucks, card cost me 65 bucks. That's all you need. I can be out in the yard or in any room and it works great.
In my opinion, if you just need a laptop/wireless to check stocks remotely, or to be comfortable in front of your TV, just pick up a used one for 400-600 bucks and buy your wireless equipment seperate. You really don't need to spend the 1 grand or more on a new laptop if that's all you want to do with it. You don't need the fancy CPU, enhanced graphics, fancy this and fancy that... Unless your laptop is or becomes your primary PC, then yes that would be a good idea, but for just a secondary machine to be mobile, save some cash and just pick up something used.

If your looking to bring it to class then you want something small - not one of those big dells. I have a 12 inch sharp actius AV18p ....Awesome high tech laptop the size of a textbook. It is faster than most desktops at my school. I use it as my primary computer and it works great. it has everything the desktops have and more.

I too have a dell inspiron 1100. i skimped out because i have a real nice dekstop, but am moving to hawaii so my laptop will be the sole computer soon... after getting it and making the move decision I upgraded to 786mb ram (from 384) and a pentium 4 2.6 (fastest that can work in the 1100)from a celeron 2.0... also have the wireless G router and network card for lounging around the dorm...
i would highly reccomend a dell notebook. The 1100 series is the typical budget notebook. the 5100 is the same but comes from the factory with higher speed processors and a few small things... dells are very good i love it!!!
