I wanted to get some advice on improving my recording sound quality. I am using a shure sm58 into my sound card. I want to switch to a pro recording mic and some voice mixer to improve vocals, get a softer studio sound quality. Please advice!

(for those that think this is the wrong board for this, 25% of posts lately have been about gay rights, jokes and what you snack on during trading. 1% is real dd, not that I have a problem with that, lol)
I have made my own cd (all mixed on the computer) and the vocals were flat. We upgraded to a yamaha Psr for better keyboard sound and now I want to fix the vocals. I need a thicker and softer silky sound. I am using shure sm58 into my 128 Pentium 4 soundcard. Doing my homework, I see I can use a Digitec vocal 300 to play with my mic sound but it doesn't have a tube (maybe there is another brand with a tube) if I am correct so maybe its better I go with a pre-amp with tube and then mess with the reverbs in software. Or, should I just buy a used recording condenser mic, no pre-amp (can I go direct into sound card?) and that will be enough. What do you guys think? I want to do this very cheepy.

You can use a condenser mic into a sound card if it is has its own phantom power. And you have to convert from XLR to mini-plug or if your so lucky down to 1/4 plug. See if your software has a plug-in for a mic emulator. Use the compression in your software on the mic..2:1 @ a fast attack and moderate release. Sorry for the Off Topic.....but at least its clean and your children can read it!!

I use a M Delta Audiophile sound card with ASIO to a 4 channel mixer. I use Cubasis VST 4.0 for my editing.... It is a SWEET set up 100% satisfied with mine bro I use a "SHURE" mic, play guitar (RainSong) and I'm lovin' it. System has 768M Ram For video editing I've got my my CPU set up to dual boot into either Linux or Windows Have 200 Gigs on the Linux side and 90 on the windows side. I use "FilmGimp" in Linux for big editing jobs. Using a NVIDIA GEFORCE graphics card with 256M RAM. getting ready to add another one Also use a TDK DVD burner to burn.
Gotta love it man!

I play around with a SAMSON CO1 condenser mic pluged (go IBZT) into my Pre-Sonus blueTube pre-amp. All runnin threw a lovely M-Audio Delta 44 sound card. Oh yeah, ya gotta love Cool Edit! IMHO you shouldnt even be attempting to record vocals without a pre-amp or decent soundcard. In this day and age (go IBZT) you can afford damn good recording equipment for 2grand! Invest, thats what were HERE for anyway... (go IBZT)

For audio I use the MM(midiman) Delta 1010 audio interface, Mackie 1402. I use Sonar and Acid Pro 4. I use AudioTechnica mics and really dig some of the CAD's. I think mic pre's are the way to go if you can use them but you should do fine with a decent condenser. Automation in software and digital mixers is amazing these days. When I want good pre's or ProTools I go to a friend.
For video I edit DV with Vegas 4 DVD+. Dual AMD, 1 gig ram, 500GB storage, ADS Pyro firewire. Oh yeah, Matrox G550 - dual head video which is great for watching stocks and looking up charts at the same time.

I used the delta Omni studio which has the phantom power (a must to pwoer any condensor mic).
A preamp isnt neccesary to record but it makes a dramatic difference in over all sound quality.

By the way, I also love Cool Edit.. Never really like anything else excxept for Pro Tools and I can't afford that set up yet.

I should upgrade mics, not try to soften my SM-58 with the pre-amp? So mics, AKG or shure condenser?
Vocal processors, sounds like it would be fine to just use software but is there an all in one processor with pre-amp?
I will have to check out the software recommendations. I like using internet audio mix and Goldwave. I tried cool edit and cakewalk but that was a long time ago. Maybe I will have another look.

I am downloading some demos on all your recommended softwares. I also researched and the shure ksm-27 has 'phantom power' so if I go with that, I do not need the extra pre-amp. Since I am not in a sound room, is this going to be too powerfull and pick up too much? Have you heard the KSM line?

Phantom power is used just to pwer a condenser up...usually around 48v. Most sound boards provide built-in phantom power, but since you're using a sound card, the condenser will have to be self-powered....at least I dont know of any PCI sound cards that have phantom power. Mic pre-amps alter the sound of a mic..to the good side.
check out sweetwater.com they have everything or B&H also. Kinda glad market's closed mon...catch up on yard work!

The best type of preamp to buy is a basic preamp without any extra features(such as tube emulation, voice optimzer, etc). All these can be purchased seperatly and a preamp should be just that, a preamp.
About your current sound quality, I was also getting a slight echo to my vocals. I learned a messy room is the best to record it. I would flip my bed matress against the wall and other crazy things. By doing this the voice wave's had a harder time reflecting. I suggest trying something like this.
