Don't know...waited 10 minutes to talk to someone but gave up! Maybe they got hit by the new virus out there and it crashed a few of their servers?

I wonder how many people were just ready to pull the trigger on a buy or sell when they went down. I think life's going to be miserable at Ameritrade for awhile!

For anyone with an Ameritrade account that had problems placing a trade prior to the close today, call them to be reimbursed with an alotted # of free trades.
This really was a PITA, and free trades does not really erase the fact that I am SOL if any of my stocks or stocks I were going to buy have news tomorrow go up. Or if any of my stocks that I was planning on selling GAP Down... Ahhhh.... Anyways, go call them and get your free trades.

Does it apply to sells as well as buys? When I saw the system was all screwed up I tried to put sells on all of my pennys for 5.00 limits good through the day.

Just call and state the problem. And see what they can do. I wasn't able to sell as well.
Here's an article:
5:34PM Ameritrade system failure prevents trading (AMTD) by Luisa Beltran NEW YORK (CBS.MW)-- Customers of Ameritrade were unable to buy or sell stocks online for nearly the last hour of trading Wednesday, spokeswoman Donna Kush confirmed. Beginning at 3:15 ET, Ameritrade (AMTD) systems broke down and the failure lasted nearly an hour. The online brokerage said only that the problem was "quote-related" and not caused by a power outage. Customers were able to place trades by phone but volumes were so high many could not get through, Kush said. "We are still investigating what it was," she said. "We expect trading to resume with no issues tomorrow."
