I'll probably buy on the 10th, assuming it drops that day when confused people sell.

hey everyone ... I'm relatively new to investing and want to have a better understanding about how long to hold on to the shares to get the dividend and when can i buy the shares ?
1. from what i read in the so far in this thread ... i dont need to buy the shares before the record date ... i can buy the shares after the record date but before the Ex-dividend date and i still get the dividend assuming that i have hold on to the shares till the Ex-dividend date
2. No matter when i buy the shares i.e. before or after the record date i need to hold on to the shares till the Ex-dividend date (this question is just to make sure)
thanks a lot in advance !!

Very good understanding of the material that has been provided Grasshopper.
Yes buy before Ex-Dividend date and sell on Ex-Dividend date to get Divy. Personally, I believe that a few days after the Ex-Divy date the stock PPS will go up but I could be wrong. Time will tell but the company will continue to have value after the Dividend is paid.

Zunicom Announces Clarification on Dividend: Stock Will Trade ''Ex-Dividend'' Beginning March 27, 2007 10:12 AM ET - BusinessWire
Zunicom, Inc. (OTCBB:ZNCM) announced today that, in accordance with NASD rules, its stock will trade "ex-dividend" beginning March 27, 2007. Thus, purchasers of Zunicom common stock on the OTC Bulletin Board on or before the payment date will be entitled to receipt of the dividend and persons who sell Zunicom shares on the OTC Bulletin Board after the record date but on or before the payment date will not be entitled to receipt of the dividend.
Zunicom had previously announced that its Board of Directors had declared a dividend of $0.80 per common share payable on March 26, 2007 to shareholders of record as of March 9, 2007. Since the dividend exceeds 25% of the value of a share of Zunicom common stock, under applicable NASD rules, the first "ex-dividend" date will be the first business day following the payment date.

Up to 1.77 today. Next Tuesday is the ex-date, so there's still time to buy and get he dividend. I expect it to rise steadily until then. then, if recent similar situations are any indicator, it will tend back north once it resets for the dividend. I'm still expecting a decent return from here.

You can sell the stock today if you want... Tomorrow is the ex-dividend date, so you can sell at the open tomorrow and get the dividend.
just so you know though, there's still a play here, in that in every case of a large special dividend that I've seen, the price tends to creep north after the dividend is paid.

My guess is that it won't. In the other "special dividend" cases that I've seen, the price regains a nice chunk of the dividend, it just takes some time.
WTMK went from .14 with a .07 dividend to actually OVER .14 post-dividend.
NEGI was $6.30 with a $3.31 dividend, and then went from $3.00 up to $5.40 or so the otehr day.
HMA when from $20 with a $10 dividend to around $11.25
So HMA was the "worst", and it still went up over 10% after the dividend.

have seen one trader--with Ameritrade--reporting that his has shown up... Call your broker and ask when they expect delivery.
btw, metal: Always go by the ex-date--companies and even brokers screw this up all the time. Occasionally you'll see something trade with no ex (usually goofy restricted shares), in which case the record dates *becomes* the ex-date... Also, some folks have problems with the three-day thing when using unsettled funds...

You shouldn't have to fight, I'd be shocked if it wasn't in there in a couple of days.

My account shows that I'm up the divy amount for the day, but the cash isn't actually in my account yet. Hopefully they square this away soon.

sorry folks ... "fight" was an extreme word ... i didnt really mean to fight !!
i did call them up and they realized that i had bought the shares without the divy value being adjusted ... they told me that they need to get in touch with there back office and will get back to me by the end of the today ...
its just a matter of cpl of days till i get my whole divy ...

well, looks like they just added my cash. Divy paid, now I'd like to see the stock head north a bit so that I can actually make some money on this.
