RFM To Participate in Nanotherapeutics' Potential $2.4 Million SBIR Contract for Improvised Explosive Device Detection; RFM Could Provide Up To $950,000 in Wireless Mesh Networking and Commercialization Technology
BUSINESS WIRE
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)----RF Monolithics, Inc. (Nasdaq:RFMI) (RFM) today announced that its Wireless Systems Group is participating in a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract awarded to Nanotherapeutics, Inc. to develop an improved system to detect improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The contract's potential value is $2.4 million, if all deliverables are elected, and of that amount RFM could provide up to $950,000 in services and products.

Nanotherapeutics has developed a unique and patented method of detecting trace amounts of certain non-nitrogen-based explosives that can be used to safely detect bombs by the military and the Department of Homeland Security. The Nanotherapeutics method uses a unique, portable, rapid gas chromatography system to detect IEDs. The system was successfully demonstrated in a prior project and uses surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices manufactured by RFM as sensors for specific IED materials, such as triacetone-triperoxide (TATP), which was recently implicated in the London bombings. Nanotherapeutics has received this new, second phase SBIR contract from the Office of Naval Research to refine, field test and commercialize the Nanotherapeutics explosives detection system. In addition to commercializing Nanotherapeutics' invention, RFM will be adding wireless mesh network capability to the system to create a field-deployable array of explosive sensing devices.

"Nanotherapeutics' fundamental innovation is an important addition to our country's war on terrorism, and we are proud to have our Wireless Systems Group working closely with them to make this solution available," said David Kirk, President and CEO of RFM. "This relationship uses the full range of our technologies, from SAW device sensors to wireless mesh networking to volume manufacturing."

"We are excited to have RFM in the technology and commercialization end of this project," said James D. Talton, Ph.D., Chief Science Officer of Nanotherapeutics, Inc. "The contributions from a strong public company like RFM add value to the innovative, proprietary inventions that we have made in this important area for the nation's security."

RF Monolithics, Inc. Continues to Leverage Technology Base with Four New Short-Range Radio Products; RFM introduces RXC101, TXC101, TRC101 and TXC102 RFIC Products
BUSINESS WIRE
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)----RF Monolithics, Inc. (Nasdaq:RFMI) (RFM) today announced continued expansion of its wireless product line with the introduction of four single chip Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits (RFICs). CEO David Kirk said, "RFM is a leader in the low-power arena and is the only company in the marketplace that offers base Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) components, single-chip IC and hybrid solutions, as well as completely integrated mesh-enabled wireless solutions for short-range radio applications. The growth of the wireless marketplace and the diversity of applications have created demand for a variety of components and radio technologies, and we believe that RFM offers the broadest, and most effective solutions for the wireless marketplace."

RFM's four new multi-channel, frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) RFIC offerings, RXC101, TXC101, TRC101 and TXC102, are in addition to the single-channel TXC100 transmitter announced recently. These new products will complement current offerings with a varied set of features and allow customers without extensive RF resources or experience to implement effective wireless data communications and control links. They are ideal for short-range wireless data communications applications where a diverse feature set, low power consumption, minimal external components and low cost are desired. These products are being marketed to RFM's existing industrial, consumer and automotive markets, through our longstanding distribution and sales channels. Data sheets on these new products are available on our website http://www.rfm.com/products/rfic.htm and all the products are currently available for shipment in production quantities.

"We are excited about this latest expansion of our RFIC product line. Being able to offer a product breadth of components for discrete solutions, multiple single chip RFIC solutions, and complete Virtual Wire(TM) radios for hybrid solutions, as well as integrated mesh-enabled wireless solutions for short-range radio applications, provides maximum flexibility for our customers and their applications," said Larry Miller, Product Manager for RFM's Low-Power Product Group.

RFM has continued to broaden its product offerings in the short-range radio space for over a decade. RFM introduced the rugged, ultra-low-power radio using SAW technology with the 1st and 2nd generation Virtual Wire(TM) radios based on a patented amplifier-sequenced hybrid (ASH) technology. The new 3rd generation Virtual Wire(TM) products, to be released soon, will build upon the previous generations with improved performance and additional features. ASH technology integrates an RFIC with RFM's SAW filtering and frequency control devices in a single hybrid package.
