(CNN) -- It's one of the biggest sources of guilt for a dog owner -- not spending enough time with their four-legged friends.

Now, a U.S. company has developed a device in a bid to reduce those feelings of despair, by inventing a cell phone so that dogs and their owners can communicate when they are away from each other.

The PetsCell, measuring 12.5cm (5 inches) by 7.5cm (3 inches), is shaped like a bone and is attached to the dog's collar. It works in much the same way as a conventional mobile phone.

The owner dials their pooch's number and after one ring, it automatically connects to the phone on the dog's collar, allowing the dog to hear its master's voice, transmitted out of a speaker built into the collar-piece.

If the dog barks in response, the owner will hear it through their own telephone, creating a dog-owner telephone "conversation."

PetsCell inventor Canadian Cameron Robb is now director of PetsMobility, the Arizona-based company producing the device.

As well as acting as a catalyst for absentee owners to communicate with their muts, Robb has also had interest in the device from search-and-rescue and hunting groups.

He believes it would also be useful to help find lost dogs.

"The ability to talk to your pet from a distance on the pet's own cellular phone is definitely novel," he said.

"But I envision the PetsCell having search-and-rescue, military, guide dog or even potentially patient and elderly care applications, to name a few."

The device costs about £100 ($188) and is expected to be on sale in the U.S. within the next six months, and in Britain by the end of the year.

Tim Miles, chief veterinary adviser for Britain's RSPCA, said micro-chipping dogs was a better way of keeping track of dogs.

Micro chipping involves a vet inserting a tiny device, about the size of a grain of rice, under the dog's skin.

If the dog is lost or stolen, dog wardens, the RSPCA or a vet can scan it for a microchip, which can immediately provide them with your contact details.

"The mobile phone could be removed by dog thieves, but a microchip is a reliable, permanent form of identification linking the animal to you," Miles said.

Police Dogs Get High-Tech Gadgets

Police dogs working with the Northumbria Police in northeast England are provided with footwear and sophisticated devices. What's more, they might soon be issued bulletproof vests and mobile phones

British police dogs initially received protective footwear 3D Bark'n Boots, made by American company Ruff Wear. These ergonomic "shoes," made of stiff high-tech fabric with antiskid soles, protect the dog's paws against nearly all adverse conditions, such as high temperature and cold, and even against cuts.
Northumbria Police constable Alex McLeod explained that the dogs need footwear particularly to protect themselves against cuts. The reason is that frequently dogs are unable to work because of broken glass and other sharp objects on the floor. If they ignore such dangers, they end up with cut paws. This often happens during investigations on the scene of a theft. By and large, the "shoes" have solved this problem.

Elite dogs are often used when there is reason to believe that law-enforcers might be confronted by an armed criminal. That is why, in addition to dog footwear, the police have spent up on miniature devices that dogs of the "special task force" wear on their heads. These are called Firearms dogs (or FIDOs).

That "headgear" consists of a miniature camera, a microphone and a transmitter, which are fastened with a light belt to the animal's head. The camera can also work in an infrared mode, which means it can "see" even in total darkness. Thus equipped, a FIDO is the first to enter premises to pick out suspects and transmit audio and video signals to the cynologist's receiver.

It is rather strange that dogs which the police themselves call "elite of the elites" are sent on such dangerous reconnaissance missions without making the dogs wear bulletproof vests first.

Perhaps the Northumbria Police just don't know anything about a special bulletproof vest for dogs, but it does exist. The American forces in Iraq dress their dogs in Kevlar vests (known as K-9 body armor) to protect them against knife strikes. Each such vest costs $1,000, which is not much considering that it costs approximately 60 times more to raise and train a police dog.

However, for some reason the U.S. infantry quadrupeds have neither protective foot-wear, nor headgear with cameras. It would be interesting to look at a police dog fully equipped with the latest high-tech gadgets. These would also include a telephone, one like Canadian inventor Cameron Robb, who heads the American company PetsMobility, intends to put up at the end of this year. The device called PetsCell enables dog owners to talk with their four-legged friends by cellphone.

hmmm?

how does the dog dial your number?

it is common for people to talk to their dogs.... yup, sheep dogs even have radios for hearing their owners commands but i'm a little concerned about people whose dogs talk BACK....

I doubt I would ever buy this product unless it was guarenteed to help me find my dog if he ran away. Although, sometimes I do admit that when people call my cell phone I wished it was my dog more and more. At least the conversation would be enjoyable! However, back to the case of him running away, usually my dogs learn pretty quick that they will be beaten senselessly if they try to run away, so the only reason I'd need it is in the case of a dognapping. So the grain of rice in the skin idea is genius except that it needs to have a GPS installed on it so I can just go find the dog myself rather than waiting for the vet to find out about it.

Overall I think it's kind of dumb but so are Americans so this will be a huge seller when it first comes out.

bark bark is definitely the retriever "I wanna go for a walk" But my communication with the retriever is best done by smiles and tail movement... speech is not their primary form of communication. Perhaps we should add in a TV-Phone combination for our pets ?

Where the hell is the human version by the way? It's in every futuristic movie. haha

Very true. We gave the phones to our 6 year old kids. I'd consider dogs much smarter to begin with.

PetsCell is a waterproof, two-way voice enabled GPS cell phone, with it's own private number that clips onto the pets collar. With geo-fence capabilities and an ambient temperature sensor, pet owners can have peace of mind that their
most treasured companions are safe, comfortable and secure.

The idea is simple, if the pet is wandering the street and a person finds the pet, they can press the "call owner" button on the PetsCell and it will auto-dial the owners phone. The owner can then speak with the person and make
arrangements to pick up the pet.

Or, if the owner desires, they may call their pet during the day and "alleviate" the pet's anxiety by "speaking" to their pet and assuring them they will be home right after work.

With geo-fence activated, the owner will be automatically alerted if their pet leaves the designated "yard" either by, e-mail, text message or voice message to their land line or cell phone.

The device, measures approximately 5 inches in length by 1.4 inches wide and 3/4's of an inch thick, is compact, rugged and comes with a detachable faceplate allowing for personalization. The PetsCell also has a USB Port and 3 programmable buttons.
