U.S. Army Awards General Dynamics $2.7 Million to Develop 'Mounted Warrior' Soldier System
Wednesday April 27, 4:26 pm ET
- Designed for Combat Vehicle Crew Members, Initial Phase to Include Dismounted Voice Communications and Tethered Video/Data Capability

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Army has awarded General Dynamics C4 Systems two contracts with a combined value of $2.7 million to develop and equip an advanced combat helmet system with integrated wireless voice communication capabilities for combat vehicle crewmen. Named "Mounted Warrior," the system will provide additional capabilities when tethered to a combat vehicle, such as the ability to see operational data and video on a helmet-mounted display. Initially, Mounted Warrior will be integrated with the Stryker eight-wheeled armored combat vehicle. General Dynamics C4 Systems is a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD - News).

The first contract, valued at $500,000, funds the initial planning effort for Mounted Warrior that will provide equipment to a Stryker battalion for operational evaluation. The second contract, for $2.2 million, provides the Army with 165 helmet-mounted displays for installation into an in-theater Stryker battalion for operational feedback.

"Along with the two-way cordless voice communication, the Mounted Warrior system will enable crew members to get several views of the operational situation," said Mark Showah, director of Intelligent Network Systems for General Dynamics C4 Systems. "For example, the crew member can pop out of a vehicle's hatch and switch the helmet-mounted display to show real-time data and video from multiple sources."

Mounted Warrior is being developed and delivered using a spiral approach, which enables faster deployment of capabilities. Spiral 1, designed for use in a Stryker combat vehicle, includes integrating the advanced combat helmet; cordless voice communications; improved sun, wind and dust goggles; and a rechargeable battery that is powered through a connection to the vehicle power supply. Future spirals will be configured for use in a wide variety of Army vehicles and will enable integrated wireless voice, data and video communications.

The General Dynamics Mounted Warrior team includes Microvision (Bothell, Wash.), a leader in light-scanning technologies for display and imaging. Microvision (Nasdaq: MVIS - News) will provide the helmet-mounted display systems for the Army's Mounted Warrior program.

General Dynamics C4 Systems leads the Mounted Warrior, Land Warrior and Air Warrior programs, which are managed by the U.S. Army Program Executive Office -- Soldier. All three systems are designed to provide significant improvements in soldier lethality, survivability, mobility and sustainability.

General Dynamics C4 Systems is a leading integrator of secure communication and information systems and technology. With more than 9,000 employees worldwide, the company specializes in command and control, communications networking, space systems, computing and information assurance for defense, government and select commercial customers in the United States and abroad.

General Dynamics, headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, employs approximately 70,100 people worldwide and had 2004 revenue of $19.2 billion. The company is a market leader in mission-critical information systems and technologies; land and expeditionary combat systems, armaments and munitions; shipbuilding and marine systems; and business aviation. From the 10k:

Microvision earns product revenue from the sale of Nomad and Flic. Microvision recognizes revenue on product sales upon customer acceptance or when the right to return has expired. Product revenue increased $1.5 million or 129% to $2.6 million from $1.1 million in 2003. The increase resulted from increased sales of both Flic and Nomad in 2004.

This does not include contract revenue...

Contract revenue decreased by $4.7 million, or 35%, to $8.8 million from $13.5 million in 2003. The decrease resulted from a lower level of development contract business performed in 2004 than that performed in 2003 on contracts entered into in both 2004 and 2003.

Contract revenue is earned from the Company's work on development contracts with the United States government and commercial enterprises. In 2004, 55% of contract revenue was derived from performance on development contracts with the United States government and 45% from performance on development contracts with commercial customers. In comparison to 53% of revenue was derived from performance on development contracts with the United States government and 47% from performance on development contracts with commercial customers in 2003. In 2003, 29% of consolidated contract revenue was earned from development contracts with a single commercial customer. The Company expects contract revenue to fluctuate significantly from year to year.

In May 2004, Microvision entered into a $3.9 million contract modification with the U.S. Army's Aviation Applied Technology Directorate to continue work on an advanced helmet mounted display and imaging system to be used in the Virtual Cockpit Optimization Program.

In December 2004, Microvision entered into a $6.2 million contract with Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, to integrate Microvision's technology into certain medical products. The contract includes an exclusive license for Microvision's technology for certain human medical applications during the term of the development agreement.

The Company had a contract revenue backlog of $7.0 million at December 31, 2004. The backlog is composed of development contracts, including amendments, entered through December 31, 2004. The Company plans to complete all of the contract backlog during 2005.

Microvision Awarded $1.2 Million Contract to Supply 165 Nomad Systems for the U.S. Army's 'Mounted Warrior' Soldier System
Business Wire - May 05, 2005 11:17

BOTHELL, Wash., May 05, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Microvision (NASDAQ:MVIS), the leader in light scanning technologies for display and imaging, announced today that it has been awarded a $1.2 million subcontract by General Dynamics C4 Systems to supply 165 Nomad ND 2500 Systems as part of the initial phase of the U.S. Army's 'Mounted Warrior' soldier system. General Dynamics was recently awarded a prime contract by the U.S. Army to develop and equip combat vehicle crewmen with an advanced situational awareness capability including combat helmet and wireless voice communications.

The Nomad Systems provides an early capability for a 'Mounted Warrior' to see operational data and video on his or her helmet-mounted display when tethered to an armored combat vehicle. The Company expects to ship the units for operational feedback during the next several months in an initial integration into a Stryker battalion.

"The U.S. Army needs display solutions that provide mission critical information in demanding environments and rapidly changing situations," said Rick Rutkowski, Microvision CEO. "The Nomad Systems we expect to deliver will enable a crew member to see real-time data and video from multiple sources, a capability they currently do not have. We are excited to be under contract with General Dynamics C4 Systems, which leads the Mounted Warrior, Land Warrior and Air Warrior programs. Each of these programs is designed to provide significant improvements in soldier lethality, survivability, mobility and sustainability and we believe improved display solutions can be an integral part of these efforts."

Mounted Warrior is being developed and delivered using a spiral approach that enables faster deployment of capabilities. Spiral 1, designed for use in a Stryker combat vehicle, includes everything worn by the combat vehicle crewman such as advanced combat helmet; cordless voice communications; improved sun, wind and dust goggles; and a rechargeable battery that is powered through a connection to the vehicle power supply. Future spirals will be configured for use in a wide variety of Army vehicles and will enable integrated wireless voice, data and video communications.

Microvision to Unveil Breakthrough Display System at Society for Information Display Annual Conference; Spectrum Color, Daylight Readable, See-Through Helmet-Mounted Display is Intended for Military Helicopters and Armored Vehicles
Business Wire - May 18, 2005 06:30

BOTHELL, Wash., May 18, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Microvision, Inc. (Nasdaq:MVIS) of Bothell, WA, the world leader in the development of scanned beam displays and imaging products, announced today that it will reveal its latest version of the Spectrum(R) helmet-mounted, full-color Display System at the Society for Information Display (SID) International Symposium, in Boston, May 24 - 26. The revolutionary scanned beam display is the culmination of a Phase 3, $3.85 million development contract with the U.S. Army Product Manager -- Air Warrior, part of Program Executive Office -- Soldier.

The helmet-mounted display system uses Microvision's proprietary scanned beam technology to give pilots and mounted soldiers unprecedented access to high fidelity imagery and information. Whether airborne or in ground vehicles, soldiers will be able to access computers, sensors and remote data, with the information overlaid on their vision by the Spectrum Display. Such a breakthrough in what the military terms "situational awareness" could be the key to more knowledgeable decision making on the battlefield, resulting in increased operational effectiveness and enhanced safety.

The new Spectrum Display System combines improved laser technology with low profile, light weight optics and Microvision's MEMS-based scanned beam display technology to achieve a level of performance previously unavailable, including full sunlight readability and color fidelity superior to existing display technologies such as AMLCD, OLED and CRT. Competing display technologies have been unable to achieve either the brightness or color gamut that the military has long sought. Additionally, the Spectrum Helmet-Mounted Display attaches to the standard military helmet with no modifications and can be viewed with the glare shield visor in either up or down position. Further, the system control module size and power have been dramatically reduced to fit within the requirements of the Army's onboard electronics transportation rack.

Developed in collaboration with the Army's Aviation & Missile Research, Development, & Engineering Center (AMRDEC), the full-color display system could be ready for military production following the next phase of flight qualification and testing, within the next 18 months. "We believe that the Spectrum System is a natural fit for helicopters and armored vehicles," said Tom Sanko, Microvision Vice President, Marketing. "Our technology in the form of the Nomad(R) Helmet-Mounted Display System has been deployed in Iraq over the past 18 months with the Stryker Brigade Combat Team. Adding color to the Nomad architecture is a natural evolution in the ongoing development of the technology. We are pleased and honored to be teamed with Program Executive Office -- Soldier in an effort to extend our breakthrough display technology to military rotorcraft and ground vehicles to enhance situational awareness and to give our troops an operational advantage on the battlefield."

In addition to the Spectrum Display System, Microvision plans to showcase the following products and prototypes at the SID exhibition: the MicroHUD(TM) automotive head-up display system, a high contrast, high resolution windshield projection display with a display engine a fraction of the size of LCD-based displays, and the Nomad Expert Technician System; the world's only hands-free wearable computer with a head-worn, head-up display, enabling technicians and other mobile workers to overlay relevant information on their tasks, thereby reducing task time and guesswork by eliminating footsteps. The Nomad System was recognized as one of the "Top Twenty Tools" by Motor Magazine and won a 2004 Technology Innovation Award from The Wall Street Journal. Microvision will also exhibit the imagic(R) microdisplay, the award winning full-color, scanned-beam display intended for low cost, high-volume consumer electronics applications as well as the latest version of the Nomad Helmet-Mounted Display System slated for deployment to Iraq later this year.

Forward-Looking Statement
