I am a college student looking to make some money or maybe even a career. I have been following this message board for some time now and have even started a fake portfolio. I am really interested in starting to invest some real money and would like some advice. If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated. I am looking for the best books, websites, and even an online broker.
Thanks,
The New Guy

Tony Turner wrote 2 good books on trading, Daytrading online, and also one for short term trading. There is also Master Swing Trader by Alan Farley. The front page of Allstocks is a good place to find tons of info and the books for sale. As for brokers, for no min. amount you may have to use Scottrade. If you have more for the account you would be better of IMO to use Choicetrade. Choicetrade has a demo trading platform you can use to check it out. They also offer trailing stops...which are great if you can't be there to watch them all the itme.

Most terrible thing about this is, I haven't even touched the surface. I didn't put down all of them either. And I don't peruse these sites as often as I should. Especially the ones that deal with "how to..."
Enjoy

Penny stocks are high risk which should only be done with venture capital. If you want to work with volatile stocks and reduce risk work in the Nasdaq first since they have more stringent filing rules. Penny stocks tend to be hear today or gone tomorrow with one over umpteenth being a gem that will hit payday.

from the scott trade site;5. Just $500 to Open an Account That’s right! Open an account with $500 in cash or equities ($2,000 for a margin account).

Go with Ameritrade if you plan on trading penny stocks. Scottrade will kill you in broker fees. Otherwise, you might try one of those unknown names like choicetrade or freetrade (of which I know nothing about). Sometimes it is worth paying a little when you are learning, though.

Scottrade's fees are more reasonable now. Thet charge $7.00 plus 1/2 of 1% for stocks under$1.00. This is for limit orders. They also let you trade pinks online now.

Interesting. Still, that 1/2% (1% for the buy and sell together) is much more than other fixed price brokers (unless you are trading small numbers).
