11 Reasons You’re Glad Jim DeMint Is Leaving The Senate [Big Grin]

[Big Grin]
By Scott Keyes on Dec 6, 2012 at 11:29 am

In an unexpected move, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), an arch-conservative and leader of the Tea Party movement, is resigning his seat in order to head up the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank in Washington DC.

DeMint has been among the most extreme members of the Senate since first getting elected in 2004, drawing a hard-right line on issues from unions to LGBT rights to abortion and beyond.

Here’s a look back at some of DeMint’s Senate highlights:

1. Stood with Akin after “legitimate rape” remarks. Following Rep. Todd Akin’s (R-MO) infamous statement that victims of “legitimate rape” can’t become pregnant, DeMint was one of the first major conservatives to stand with the Missouri congressman. DeMint even used his political action committee to donate $90,000 to Akin’s campaign and used its network to raise hundreds of thousands more. “We support Todd Akin and hope freedom-loving Americans in Missouri and around the country will join us,” DeMint’s group said.

2. Led the opposition against Obamacare. In 2009, during the height of the GOP’s opposition to health care reform, DeMint told a conference call of conservative activists that, “If we’re able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him.” Ironically, DeMint once supported Mitt Romney’s health care reform in Massachusetts, the law on which Obamacare is based.

3. Wants to prevent gay or unmarried teachers from teaching in public schools. In 2010, DeMint “said if someone is openly homosexual, they shouldn’t be teaching in the classroom and he holds the same position on an unmarried woman who’s sleeping with her boyfriend — she shouldn’t be in the classroom.” During his first Senate campaign in 2004, DeMint agreed with the state party’s platform barring gay teachers from public schools, claiming that the government shouldn’t endorse certain behaviors.

4. Pushed a bill outlawing the discussion of abortion over the Internet. Last year, DeMint proposed an amendment to an unrelated bill that would have barred a woman and her doctor from discussing abortion over the internet, even if her health was at risk and tele-conferencing was the most feasible option to receive care.

5. Wants to strip all federal employees of collective bargaining rights. Though most federal employees don’t enjoy the rights and benefits of unionization, DeMint wants to take away even the few bargaining rights they currently enjoy. “I don’t believe collective bargaining has any place in government,” DeMint told ThinkProgress last year.

6. Blocked creation of the National Women’s History Museum. Along with fellow arch-conservative Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), DeMint placed a hold on a 2010 bill to sell land near the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC in order to create the National Women’s History Museum. Coburn justified their move to block the museum by noting that there already exist museums for “quilters” and “cowgirls”.

7. Likened striking Chicago teachers to “thugs” in the Middle East. Speaking at the Values Voters Summit in September 2012, DeMint blasted Chicago teachers who were on strike for a brief period earlier this year. “On my way over, I was reading another story about a distant place where thugs had put 400,000 children out in the streets,” DeMint said. “And then I realized that was a story about the Chicago teachers strike.”

8. Threatened to single-handedly shut down the Senate. In September 2010, DeMint warned his colleagues that he would place a unilateral hold on every single piece of legislation in the Senate, bringing the entire lawmaking process to a grinding halt. Despite being in the minority, DeMint threatened to only allow bills to proceed that his office had personally approved.

9. Used a failed terrorist plot to attack unions. Following the failed “underwear bomber” plot in December 2009, DeMint went on Fox News and used the episode as an opportunity to bash unions. “I am concerned, because it’s related to another issue that we’re dealing with now in the Senate,” DeMint said. “The administration is intent on unionizing and submitting our airport security to union bosses’ collective bargaining.”

10. Argued that people with pre-existing conditions got better care before Obamacare. Speaking with ThinkProgress at a Tea Party rally this year, DeMint argued that Obamacare actually hurt people with pre-existing conditions, despite that fact that it bars insurance companies from denying them care. “I can guarantee you people with pre-exisitng conditions are going to get less health care—lower quality health care—under Obamacare,” DeMint said.

11. “Willing” to cause “serious disruptions” in the economy in order to secure draconian cuts. During last year’s debt ceiling showdown, DeMint appeared on Fox Business and said that, despite the fact that not raising the debt ceiling would cause “serious disruptions,” he was “willing to do that” in order to get major cuts to social programs like Medicare and Social Security.

We are 2 percentage points away from collapse.

Oh boy....what are all the handout people gonna do when they stop getting that check from papa smurf....
Better have a few unregistered guns on hand....cause they'll be taking the registered ones with force.

God bless America.

Everything you voted for will slowly erode your right to bear arms. May not happen while your alive but the initiation of regulation by you and yours will have them knocking on your door sooner than you think.

What will you say to them Ray when they ask for your firearms????

LOL I can hear it now...."but wait...I voted for Obama....I worship him, How can you take my guns"?

won't happen like you think. You need a looney bin.

P.S. Obama never took away any gun rights

And Romney lost. By the way catch a wave , it might take you to Romney land.

And another thing you might want to know I have never begged in my life. It sure sounds like you know how to do it.

the Dems are still smarting over losing the Congress in the mid-90's.

they won't be going directly for the guns unless Hillary gets in the white house, then i beleive she will try again.

i watch both Fox and Msnbc reguarly, and there are still quite a few anti-gun dems who will try if they get a chance. Obama knows better.

rember Ray, obama got elected because some of us (ex)GOP's are willing to look around say when things are wrong, but the GOP will have me back the minute the 2nd ammnedmet is under attack again even tho they have gone nuts since 9-11..

there are still people who think the assault weapons ban actually banned real assualt rifles (they didn't) and had any chance of saving one single life... it was one of the dumbest laws i've ever seen... i have never heard of one single person ever being injured in a Bayonnet crime!
LOL idjits!
and unConstitutional to boot.

i began wondering what they were smoking whne they gave out those tax rebate check the year the Iraq war started...

this new found fiscal repsonsibiltiy they claim to have? smoke and mirros IMO. they'll do it agin if they get the power back...

Sounds good but remember Obama has never introduced any anti gun legislation. I feel when the anti gun laws will come from the right. And I truly mean that.

Other wise If I was still working and they asked me to follow an order I would follow it no matter what side of the fence that order was on so remember that.

that's why i left the navy- not that i was ordered to shoot someone, but becuase i was ordered to do things that were totally stupid. As a habitual abuser of adrenaline ( the finest drug ever created) i was willing to do alot of dumb stuff, but some of the orders were more than just unsafe they were ridiculously stupid and unsafe for no need.

i get that, and i also acknowledge Obama has stayed away form gunlaws, becuase IMO he isnot dumb and he understand his limitations. people who don't know their limitations don't last long. he took health care right to the edge, and as it comes into effect? i am sure people will prolly stop beaching about it so much- it does still need a few fixes tho.

when i lived in Va i ran with marine recon folks, active and retired, coast guard interdiction/boarding crews and navy seals- upon re-enlismtent they were being required to sign an affidavit (under Clinton) that they acknowledged that the USN was immune/not ruled to follow the Posse Comitatus- i nver saw a copy of the afffadavit, but quite a few them were very grim about it.
it's true the navy and marines are not covered under the posse comitatus...

to be honest Ray? the "right" and the "left " have all of their defintions crossed up.. CFlinotn is "liberal" because he's OK with colored folks and plays a Sax? I don't consider myself liberal and i am OK with all races, and gays... The Clintons allowed a gay witchhunt in the USN and signed the protection of marriage act whihc i will predict is going to be found uncostittuional on the basis that Corporations have the right to mege withother corporatiosn regardless of their sex.... and any other decisiosn is based inreligion whihc cannot be....

i am still considered to be redneck by liberal on both coasts even tho i hold these views. Here in MS? i dunno what to call myself...

Here is the thing....

This is gonna be a long rant...so if your having trouble sleeping, by all means continue to read:)

Obama is anti-gun...but that hardly matters. I will assume that you are correct in saying that he has not put forth any plans for circumventing the second ammendenment. I don't anticipate that he will. That Sacred Cow is not "ready to go to market yet"...and he knows it. I am quite sure that if he felt like the American people would accept it he would have already tried to do it. The 2nd is the right that if you come for, you better know you can win because you run the very real risk of setting off a "hot" revolution.

Surfer's thinking is correct in my mind...I will try to refrain from maligning a political party because the idiocy of our government owes no allegiance to party. I don't know when...but I guarauntee at some point...following our current societal trajectory; the future will see an attempt at gun confiscation. I would imagine it will begin with regulations...making it difficult to buy, own, maintain, or qualify for ownership. I would expect severe and heavy taxes on Ammo. Couple that with what urban (and actually mean urban...not black) kids are being taught to think about guns and you will have diminshed numbers of gun owners in the future...by their own choice "be it from indoctrination or financial coercion."

At some point in the future,Cetaris Paribus, the amount of people ferociously loyal to the right to bear arms will be substantially less than those that oppose it or those that don't care enough pick a side. At that point they will take that "sacred cow to market" and finally make the grab for REAL gun contol....think of it as a Prize Fight...no good pugilist starts off the fight throwing haymakers....use the jab, keep'em off balance, soften them up, read and react to feedback...you can tell when he is good and tenderized and ready for a nap...then take your shot. Try for the knockout to early and you open yourself up for a counter by a still strong opponent. That is why the "flaming" guncontrol idiots are not the ones to worry about. Those dumbazzes are playing checkers and not even that well....the ones that are content to simply poison the well with veiled rhetoric in order to influence the societal consciousness gradually are the scary ones...they know the fruit ain't ripe yet....they are playing chess.

But I am sick of hearing about how the 2nd needs to be preserved for hunters, collectors, and enthusiasts....that is Horse****e. It was not incuded in the bill'O Rights for those reasons...It was included to ensure that if the people valued their Constitution, they had a means to fight for it against an oppressive government. I also believe that many of the founders knew in their hearts that at some point in the future, one of their succesive generations would have to look at their rifles and answer this question; "I have to do something with this gun...surrender it, or use it now...which of these two courses of action can I take and remain loyal to the idea man's natural state is Freedom."

The 2nd ammendment is the one you can't afford to lose...as long as it is maintained, there is always CHANCE to hit the reset button

I am of the opinion that if they come for my 2nd ammendment right then it is time for me to fully assert my 2nd ammendment right....but it would be a lot nicer if would never get to that point.

Societal change is inevitable...but accepting anything is a first, small, step.....be sure its the direction you really wanna go before you take it....this is a big, powerful, country....its momentum will not be stopped easily once in motion.

i'm sick of hearing that one too [Wink] just remember that a remington 700 BDL is just as good as a deer gun as it is anything else. in fact, ballistics requirements for dropping a deer is about the same as us big apes... as of this year it is estimated that 4 million remington 700's (alone) are in circultion in the states.

comeon ray, can you not see the divide shaping up?

before we even invaded Iraq? I was very uncomfortable with Bush telling sadam he had 24 hours or whatever to get of town... I voted for him and his dad who did the same thing to manuel noriega. That creeped me out too. The thing that creeps me out th most is these same guys went and created a Made in USA soldier of fortune corporation called balckwater. I personally KNOW alot of the people that were originally recruited to build that outfit, i lived on the river that is blackwater, it's actaully named the Northwest River and it was famous for it's sweetwater when ships were still wooden. The place i once owned went from 200K to 750K when blackwater formed. Unfortunately i had already sold out and moved to Cali well before that. I do belive that we have people who would give that order in the system now, and this GOP plan to destroy labor is as good of trigger as any to bring it on.... The contingencies are already all in place in the wargame computers, i can garantee you that. Whateve really happened on 9-11? We know that we do not have the full story. I suspect it was actually a coverup for the largest bank robery ever. The money they lost? That's why the economy really collapsed. They were trying like hell to recover the money they owed to investors that they lost, and they just couldn't because it was so massive. Remebr that money has become nothing more than some data stroed in chips now, and they apparently did not have the backup systmes that anybody with any common sense has.
I tend to beleive that average soldiers sailors and marines will refuse those orders too, but whne you create elite privately funded warriors, give them the best most expensive toys to play with and annual paychecks in the quarter million per year range instead of 90 grand per year (comabt pay) they end up in big debt and can be leveraged.

even in civilian gvot agencies as of today, i clearly see thatthe leaders and administrtors have their oown set of rules and behave as if they are immune from subordinates bringing them to task for violations of law.... they are wrong in their asumptions that they cannot be held accountable, but the price to pay to bring that justice to them is very high, and few are willing to pay it.

National Security Brief: U.S. Counterterror Agency Has New Spy Powers

By ThinkProgress on Dec 13, 2012 at 9:04 am

The Wall Street Journal reports that the National Counterterrorism Center now has the authority to examine government files of U.S. citizens “for possible criminal behavior, even if there is no reason to suspect them.” The Journal notes that the new powers are “a departure from past practice, which barred the agency from storing information about ordinary Americans unless a person was a terror suspect or related to an investigation.” The agency now “can copy entire government databases –flight records, casino-employee lists, the names of Americans hosting foreign-exchange students and many others” and “has new authority to keep data about innocent U.S. citizens for up to five years, and to analyze it for suspicious patterns of behavior. Previously, both were prohibited. Data about Americans ‘reasonably believed to constitute terrorism information’ may be permanently retained.”

Ray...you are avoiding our questions

WHEN your handlers order you to "open fire" on friends and relatives, will you do it or not?

If not, what do you think will happen to you?

I don't have any "handlers"...and I didn't insinuate that I did...why would you make that assumption?

I am asking ray based on his post above...

He worked many years in the prison system according to his posts.

Besides, the only people with "handlers" are celebs and politicians normally. But, I guess your sarcasm overlooked that. And I do get the sarcasm, but your question posed was a bit idiotic. Whether you posed it to Ray, or cowpie. Just a dip**** question from the getgo IMO.

Sorry if my question seemed dipchitty to you, but I can understand how your low level of intelligence can't quite get a grasp of what I was asking...

When I have a free hour or so, I'll try to explain it in "simpler" terms for you...

ray, i've always assumed they do this anyway-

in fact, i'm pretty sure this post is scanned by the NSA and was even before 9-11. they just cannot use it in court as evidence to obtain conviction.

if they use it to catch you? you'll never even know they used it -the prosectuion will work around it.

i did grow up inside the DC beltway, i know how power is gained and kept.

So far all my orders have beento maintain order under impossible conditions if you rae talking about shooting down people that are protesting a civil rights issue look for a police officer or military not me.

Buck you asked me if i would shout my family down I said a very clear no and i would not exspect to get an order like that. Not only that I would not ever exspect any of my officers to do anything like that. As for both sides of the fence meaning left or right if it is a and order it has to be listened to. My orders are not the same as the military or police forces.

And let me say this I have never recieved an unlawful order to date.

Again glass no.

Now Glass if you are talking about disarming some body . The powers that be would not send people out to do that unless they changed your rights to unarm citizens. And you know that people would die on both sides following those orders. But that would be something that would not involve me.

see, buck wasn't the only person who misread your statement there...

i am not sitting around waiting for the pockylypse. i don't have a bring on the doodmsday attitude. you're right, alot of people will die if they try to change those rights- many times more than died in the Civil War in fact.

Do you need me to post my direct answer again or are you satisfied glass? The third time may be a charm.

And by the way Glass are willing to follow the law?

'the law" lost my respect decades ago, remebr ny folks were in politics all th way in the 60's and 70's. What i see "in the law" is that it is there for the benefit of those that are willing to enforce it, and those people ignore it themsleves as is convenient. Show me i'm wrong, i challenge you.

so, my willingness to follow the law goes as far as i figger it benefits me just like the people who make and enforce the law. after that? it's every man/woman/child/ for himself.. Welcome To Aemerica, ain't it great? it has always been this way, i ain't complaining, i'm just not one of those fools who waves the flag and pretends-

if you are asking me would i honor a law that banned guns? not while i'm alive. I'm pretty sure about 5 million other men would be with me on that..

you have what it takes to be a criminal if what you are saying is the truth.

It all starts with a mental attitude and ends in a place and time nobody wants

"what it takes to be a criminal"? sorry ray you lost me there. i can't get thru a week without breaking some stupid law. and neither can you, you just don't know it... if you think this country isn't run by criminals then you are living in disneyland... Obama himself admitted to using illegal drugs before he got elected, Bush Jr? he didn't admit it in so many words, but he admitted it by saying h e would want kids to do what he did.... what IS a criminal? somebody convicted of a crime? or somebody who has committed a crime ever- (caught or not)?

as to the 2nd ammendment, it is quite clear, unless it i srepeale in toto, i would not be criminal for standing up for my rights. and it won't get repealed without something like civil war.

Seriously ray...guys like you scare me more than real criminals...not because you carry a badge, but because of your loyalty to the "powers to be"

P.S. Obama never took away any gun rights

And Romney lost. By the way catch a wave , it might take you to Romney land.

And another thing you might want to know I have never begged in my life. It sure sounds like you know how to do it.

LMAO...Ray I am not a supporter of either primary political party.
I think it's great that Obama won. It would have saved me a few bucks if Romney had but I don't really care for money like most. I view life on a moral level.
I won't judge you based on your political affirmation as you seem to do others.
I will however warn that worshiping your leader is hazardous as history has proven.

As for catching waves....you my friend will never know the feeling of what free falling into a 20 foot peak is like. Or being smashed, rolled and being held under for what feels like eternity.

It's humbling and has kept me in peak physical shape and for that I am grateful.

Your hollywood view of surfing is to be expected....it's what has been fed to you.

The looney bin....LMAO who qualifies??

Sufer I don't know what Hollywood thinks of you and Iam happy that you are in shape. and you are free to dive off all the mountains you want to.

Other than that my picture of you is a tin foil hat drooling in a basement protecting your freeze dried food with a shot gun that nobody cares if you own it or not.

All I can say is please lock the basement door and come out twenty years from now, and look for your Romney land

Anybody that tells me that they will go through this life and obey the laws that they want to and the hell with the rest is already starting to believe that he is above society. And as far as real criminals you have never been around enough of them to to know what they are like and I hope you never have to be.
