I am fortunate enough to have quite a few places nearby to go see live music...
Thought I would start a thread for peeps to share their reviews of musicians/bands that they have seen live...
One of my favorite places to go is a small (15000 seats) outdoor theater/ski resort/golf course called DTE Energy Music Theater a.k.a. Pine Knob. I can go there and sit on the lawn for $5.00 to $10.00 a show which includes parking. I saw my first rock concert there in 1974. The James Gang with Joe Walsh as the front man.
So far this year I have seen...
The Doobie Brothers...Good solid working band
Phish...Modern day Grateful Dead band. Excellent music...many followers...theater was filled
Huey Lewis and the News...Another good solid band

Well I remember when I used to go see Janis Joplin as well as Peter, Paul, and Mary. I cant remember how much the tickets were back then though.

Yeah you know...back then I bet there was so much more we could do without fear of the PC police. Back then the big rebels were pot smokers (big deal). These days we have crack, meth, etc.

tonight i'm going to see a very young band- 20 to 23 yr olds ,i expect at least one of the members to become great/well knwon for what they do. they aren't a bules band at all, they can do just about anything. I jokingly demand Led Zep and Floyd from them all the time and they play great modern interpretations of the old stuff... Their original stuff is good but they refuse to "go commercail" for now... they don't have a lead singer cuz they feel like that would be "going commercial"..
i expect at some point tehy will decide money ain't bad to have tho
They just had a shakeup and lost thier drummer cuz he fell in love with a girl who took him outa town... so they are in transition, but at their age that's a good thing IMO....

Saw Steve Earle last night at Billy Bob's: great effin band, terrible sound system from the self-proclaimed "World's Largest Honky-Tonk." If the name doesn't ring a bell, Earle's big hit so far is "Copperhead Road," which rocks the roots. However, he's much more layered than the "big hit"--you should see all the instrument changes among guitars, bouzouki, mandolins, pedal steel, fiddle, keyboards--shoot, everybody except the drummer plays at least three instruments. But (and this is part of their impressive professionalism) no time is lost between tunes; they have a roadie/tech on stage, dressed in black to divert attention, who brings each instrument to each player as needed, so nobody misses a beat. Very cool.
By way of contrast, we went last month to hear Willis Alan Ramsey at the Kessler in Dallas (an old, converted neighborhood theater), where the sound system is excellent. Alan plays guitar and sings, no accompaniment, no frills--except his gorgeous playing and unbelievable voice...contact high for like two, three days.
even more contrst,, i played at a dive bar in Hager city wisc sat nit,,...no one there, horrible sound, ok lead guitar, great harp, great 2nd guitar, small drinks, hot, humid, long drive, adequate pay...

Saw Sublime with their new singer Rome Ramirez at Stage AE last night...Was a sold out show and I think everybody in the crowd knew the lyrics to every song...Great show and great venue...Brought back a ton of high school and college memories...

One of the nice parts about living where i do is there is plenty of music to hear.
We have so many places where big names play and local concerts many days of the week during the summer months where smaller names play, pretty much any type of music.
Go down to the pier on any given night and many street singers are out, on Tuesdays the street market usually draws several groups.
The best setup i have seen lately is a group with and old pickup truck pulls up to the Seal Beach pier area with and old piano mounted on the truck then several indivuals with electric guitars and one drummer start doing their thing.
