so much for the profit motive in business there huh?
there are rumors that it has changed hands recently, but none are verifiable...

It seems so bigfoot, I was thinking that same thought today. It seems like people have moved on from the spill, those that dont live near it at least. I still see it as our number one disaster right now.

New totals for new flow rate of 35,000bpd to 60,000 bpd
Making three estimations for low (35), middle (47.5), high(60)
Criteria on totals: *Uninterrupted flow for 44 days before riser was cut. *Suction tube only successful mitigation measure during this time which captured 22,000 barrels while it was in place. *4% increase in flow rate after riser cut on June 4th (day 45). *Top Hat placed on day 45. *Daily Oil containment results reported by BP since June 4th when top hat was placed... June 4th-6,100 5th 10,500 6th 11,100 7th 14,800 8th 15,000 9th 15,800 10th 15,400 11th 15,550 12th 15,000 13th 15,200 14th 15,420 15th 10,440 (lightning fire) 16th 18,600 (Q4000 starts burning oil) 17th 25,000 18th 24,500 19th 21,050 (Partial shutdown to fix flame arrestor) 20th 23,290 21st 25,830 22nd 27,100 23rd 16,830 (Underwater robot hits cap causes 10 hour shutdown) 24th 23,725 25th 24,550 26th 22,750 27th 23,400 28th 23,400
High spill estimate: 3,717,665 barrels spilled into the gulf 6/28/10
The low estimate alone puts us at 5th worst oil spill on record now. Mid estimate puts us at 4th worst under Ixtoc 1(3.3-3.5Mil Barrels). High estimate puts us above Ixtoc 1 and only below Saddam's burning of the oil fields of Kuwait (5.5-11Mil Barrels) and the 1910 Lakeview Gusher, USA (9Mil Barrels).

That hurricane is a paintbrush....just painting the coast with oil. This is just a weak one that went south of the spill.....we get a CAT 3, 4, or 5 and the eye goes over the spill site...its going to be horrible on so many levels.
They said this hurricane so early and that size is an indicator of their prediction being right....2010 hurricane season is going to be very active. I can almost guarantee you there will be at least one hurricane that goes over this.

Think about if another major hurricane came in, just think of all the dead animals that would be dropped on the coast. I saw video of Dolphins in groups belly up dead today. Its sad to see the turtles too. Im not a tree hugger, but I do care about the environment in a common sense way....man, this spill is just sucking the life out of the gulf in so many ways.

This spill is still really hard to fathom, the sad thing is that a majority of Americans are somewhat immune to the shock of it now and it "old news".
oh btw, Jimmy Buffet came out and blamed Bush for the spill. Im really tired of the Blame Bush crying. They act as if this disaster could only happen to a Republican President, and that oil spills are done by politics.

Yeah heard that too... It's not even an American corporation? Any way you look at it this is BP's fault. There were some monstrously idiotic decisions made that led to the blowout.

Yeah when those internal memos came out that showed the discussions within BP about the well...it was a straight up guilty verdict in my opinion. Even Anadarko is saying in the public that BP was reckless.

WASHINGTON/BOSTON (Reuters) – U.S. securities regulators are investigating whether people may have illegally profited from trading on nonpublic information at BP Plc (BP.L) (BP.N) in the weeks and months following the disastrous Gulf of Mexico oil spill, two sources familiar with the investigation said on Monday.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is also investigating whether BP properly disclosed information on risks related to its deepwater oil operations in the Gulf of Mexico, one of the sources said.
For roughly two months after an explosion sank the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform, BP's stock price dropped steadily and the company's value fell by half.
The SEC probe is one of a number of investigations of the company and others tied to the spill. Congressional committees and a presidentially appointed panel are probing various aspects of the spill. The Justice Department is looking at potential civil and criminal violations of federal environmental laws.
The sources cautioned that the investigation is preliminary and requested anonymity because they have not been authorized to speak publicly about the matter.
Last week, BP said the SEC and the Justice Department were conducting "informal inquiries into securities matters arising in relation" to the explosion at the offshore drilling rig that ruptured BP's well.
The SEC declined comment.
BP in its annual report for 2009 spelled out some operational risks, including potential oil spills.
"Failure to manage these risks could result in injury or loss of life, environmental damage, or loss of production and could result in regulatory action, legal liability and damage to our reputation," the report said.
BP also said in that filing that drilling and production was subject to "natural hazards and other uncertainties, including those relating to the physical characteristics of an oil or natural gas field."
BP did not immediately return calls for comment. The energy giant faces more than 300 private civil lawsuits. The government investigations are expected to help the private lawsuits, which cover everything from personal injury to economic loss as a result of fewer people eating at Gulf Coast seafood restaurants and seafood caught in those waters.
After coming under harsh criticism for having missed major investment scandals in the last years, the SEC is acting significantly more aggressively.
Last week, the regulator accused septuagenarian brothers Samuel and Charles Wyly of earning millions by trading on nonpublic information.
The SEC also took a bold move against Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) and earlier this year charged the bank with civil fraud in connection with a subprime mortgage product. Goldman subsequently settled with the SEC.
"Clearly this means that the current crew (at the SEC) is taking a more aggressive stance," said Richard Sauer, a former administrator in the Securities and Exchange Commission's enforcement division.

Did anyone see the all the dead fish floating around yesterday they took photos of in the gulf? Thousands of them just out of nowhere floating at the top. They went back the next day and they were all gone. They said sharks got them mostly. Wonder where all the oil went.

I was just thinking the same thing Moo Moo. How can shark fin be mistaken for squid? Meat texture wise I guess but visual appearance?.. Not sure about that.

Shark fin tastes almost exactly like calamari, especially after it is deep fried. When fishermen take in too big a catch of shark fin and can't sell it to the Asian market they cut it into rings and repackage it as calamari.
I don't know how much this happens in America anymore after the protections placed over sharks in 1998 and 2003 due to overfishing but I know it still happens frequently in Japan and China. It is a very easy bait and switch so I doubt it is gone completely.
If your calamari has tentacles pieces mixed in with the rings then it is really squid. However squid is a carnivore so I would think twice about bio-accumulation there as well.
But then....I am the guy who has resolved not to eat anything taken out of the gulf or Floridian waters for the next decade anyway so take my opinions as you will.

I really dont understand how they can go around saying how safe the food is from the gulf. I mean, they could test it for 6 months rigorously, stop, and then the next month all of a sudden it finally hits the food chain.
Not the oil I am worried about it is the dispersants. How can all this crap dumped on the water surface and subsurface NOT be a hazard to human consumption.
But hey what can you do. I am sure a lot of food IS safe. Who wants to risk it though? Does anyone really think with the job losses and just complete depression they are going to go around saying: "hey, you know what, this stuff sooner or later is going to have chemicals and contaminants in it"

It a calculated stance. They can't very well be honest about the possibility that all seafood from the gulf could be tainted. That would be the final blow to fishermen all throughout the region. So they lie and play the odds that either it won't be that bad.. or they find a way to blame illnesses on something else. Time will tell.

I think what you said is what they will do. It is no different than BP or the government saying how much oil was spilling into the gulf. You know its there, but how much is what people want to know.
We know dispersants and oil are still in the water and fish are being exposed to it, but nobody knows how much. I am pissed BP has been trying to keep tight lipped and evasive about inside opinions on how much oil per day was coming out. I bet their strategy was to cover up as much as possible, spend some money on cleanup, etc
then the well gets capped, halt the commercials so exposure goes down...you know to keep the public thoughts of BP on something else like politics. Then just let it go away and act like it wasnt a big issue.
What a sick company. They give other companies with good records in the business a black eye.

I have better analysis, but this board brings out the ugliest in people. I would say you bring the only challenging perspectives. It takes a positive environment to bring out the best. There is never any business discussions here, or any strategy. Just demonization of a certain news network, and anything that has to do with former Presidents that havent made decisions since January 20th. No wonder there are only a few of us left on the off topic discussion page.
