What does everyone think about this? Tuna is a good healthy lunch, but there are a lot of alarmists out there saying how bad it is. They say there is more mercury in Albacore. Anyone else watch this? Thoughts?

I mean if I eat three cans of Tuna a week am I harming long term health in any way? I wouldnt think so, but there is a lot of controversy out there on this it seems.

three cans a week is alot.

i got a few fillings when i was in boot camp. (never had any more before or since, which makes me wonder about those effers). A few years back i discovered that there's enough mercury in each of my fillings to poison good size lake. They say getting 'em removed (without pulling the teeth) is more dangerous than leaving 'em in. I also discovered that raw onions and garlic re supposed to help your body eliminate mercury and lead from your blood.

when i was kid my dad always had a house remodeling project in his off-time so i got dosed with alot of lead too. All paint had lead in it before the late 70's and we scraped and sanded and chipped heckofalot of old paint when i was growing up.

my readings have taught me that some people can tolerate high levels of lead and mercury and others are very sensitive to them.

if you think it's affecting you then you should consider cutting back- 1 can a week is cosnidered safe, i bet two cans a week would be just as safe.

i would not want my wife eating that much if we wanted kids, and esp. when she was pregnant. [Wink]

mercury has been know for along time to be a problem

Mad as a hatter
Although the name "Mad Hatter" was undoubtedly inspired by the phrase "as mad as a hatter", there is some uncertainty as to the origins of this phrase. As mercury was used in the process of curing pelts used in some hats, it was impossible for hatters to avoid inhaling the mercury fumes given off during the hatmaking process. Hatters and mill workers often suffered mercury poisoning as residual mercury vapor caused neurological damage including confused speech and distorted vision; hatmaking was the main trade in Stockport, near where Carroll grew up. It was not unusual then for hatters to appear disturbed or mentally confused; many died early as a result of mercury poisoning. However, the Mad Hatter does not exhibit the symptoms of mercury poisoning, which include "excessive timidity, diffidence, increasing shyness, loss of self-confidence, anxiety, and a desire to remain unobserved and unobtrusive.

Well I love cooking garlic and onions so that should help. I chop up onions, and cut up some garlic cloves and lightly saute them and add them to things like my scrambled eggs, chicken breast on the skillet, and with other mixed veggies.

Is any of that colon cleanse stuff worth much? It seems like a lot of them are just making money off people. It is an interesting thought, and the pictures of the crap that comes out of people after consuming the cleanse drink is filthy. However, I wonder if it is the drink itself that makes that stuff look the way it does.

It's the bio accumulation factor mate. Not only are we eating the mercury that the tuna itself has received from the waters it swims in but Tuna is also a carnivorous fish so we are eating all the mercury that it has ingested that was in all the smaller fish it consumed as well.

This is what the FDA suggests.

Mercury Contamination in Fish

PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY
Eating Tuna Safely

This table provides guidelines on how much canned tuna it is safe to eat, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. While mercury poses the most serious health threat to children and women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, others may also wish to use this list as a guide.

Don't eat more than one can every:
If you weigh: White Albacore Chunk Light
20 lbs 10 weeks 3 weeks
30 lbs 6 weeks 2 weeks
40 lbs 5 weeks 11 days
50 lbs 4 weeks 9 days
60 lbs 3 weeks 7 days
70 lbs 3 weeks 6 days
80 lbs 2 weeks 6 days
90 lbs 2 weeks 5 days
100 lbs 2 weeks 5 days
110 lbs 12 days 4 days
120 lbs 11 days 4 days
130 lbs 10 days 4 days
140 lbs 10 days 3 days
150+ lbs 9 days 3 days
