Utah is definetly a state that needs to have separation of Church and State... getting detained for this is ridiculous... and I thought Seeking Freedom says they have a very tolerant attitude towards gays... yeah right... Mormons are the biggest hyprocrites of all religions probably... they watch the most porn it was found out in a study yet they condemn it... they are against gay rights but I am sure they are probably more gay Mormons behind closed doors more then they would like people to believe who are prominent members...

Protesters Kiss Near Mormon TempleGay Couple

Arrested for Kiss on Cheek Days Before

Protesters engaged in very public displays of affection in front of the Mormon church headquarters in Salt Lake City after two men were detained for sharing a kiss on the cheek in a plaza owned by the church.
Matt Aune said he and his partner, Derek Jones, were walking home from a concert on the night of July 9 when they cut through the Main Street Plaza near the Salt Lake City Mormon temple.

Aune, 28, said he gave Jones, 25, a hug and kiss and that the two were then approached by a security guard, who asked them to leave, telling them they were being inappropriate and that public displays of affection aren't allowed on the property. He said other guards arrived and the men were handcuffed.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said that the men became argumentative and refused to leave after being asked to stop their "inappropriate behavior." The men say they were targeted because they are gay.
Police later arrived and both men were cited with misdemeanor trespassing, Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Robin Snyder said.
"It doesn't matter what they were asked to leave for," Snyder said. "If they are asked to leave and don't they are ... trespassing."
The incident sparked a protest on Sunday: a "kiss-in" at the headquarters of the LDS Church in Salt Lake City, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
More than 100 people, some wearing bright lipstick and others with hearts pinned to their clothing, gathered near the Main Street Plaza to share kisses on the cheek and mouth to show their support for Aune and Jones. Security guards and later police stopped the protesters from actually entering onto the plaza.
Jones and Aune attended the event, but remained quiet at the back of the crowd.
"I just want to get the message out," Jones said. "We're very flattered and very proud."
The Tribune reported the incident and protest have become a "flash point" of controversies involving the LDS Church: first, the sale of the plaza from the city to the church 10 years ago and second, the church's more recent support of California's gay marriage ban.

Another example of "in your face" crap. No wonder a lot of people dont take gay movments too seriously...they go and pull childish stunts in front of mormon temples just to piss them off? Grow up.

Nice bait, Mach, but you'll have to forgive me if I don't bite...

Ok, maybe a nibble. [Smile]

First, just because we believe that man SHOULD and CAN be better than they are, it doesn't mean that we don't understand and accept that they will sometimes fail to do so. Understanding man's limitations does not mean that it is hypocritical to aspire to something better.

On the second point, the 'gay friendly' ranking thing? That distinction has been made time and again by Gay and Lesbian groups, it is not a self given distinction...

As to the Temple Square incident, the article focuses only on one side of the story. Regardless of the cause of the request, if you are asked to leave private property and refuse, that's simple trespass. A fineable misdemeanor.

I beg to differ on that because there are alot more gay friendly cities/states then Utah/SLC like SF for example...

Had the couple been heterosexual would the results be the same? I doubt it.

Every religion on the planet, Mach. From Buddhism to Islam. From Judaism to Scientology. Each religion preaches that man has two choices (oversimplified). Either remain in what is barely above animal state, or rise above it and become better than he was born. Recognizing that success will not be met every time in every case doesn't mean you stop aspiring to be better altogether.

quote:

And there are alot less friendly places too. Yet, we still keep showing up on the lists, and normally pretty high on them as well. Go figure.

You apparently missed part of my last post then, Mach. They weren't fined for kissing. They were fined for refusing to leave private property when asked. A hetero couple that refused to leave when asked would have fined just the same.

On point, every year when we have our General Conference (bi-annual meeting to receive counsel from our leaders), inevitably we get anti-mormon groups that sit just outside Temple Square or the Tabernacle and shout all sorts of crap at those trying to attend. As long as they stay on public property they have every right to assemble and to their free speech. If, however, they actually enter private property, then they may be asked to leave and are subject to the trespass fine if they do not comply. Sexual orientation has nothing to do with it. The right to ask someone to leave your land, whatever the reason, is.

He can't, Lock. Even if he plans on saying mormon's are repubs (in general), it ignore's the fact that while Utah is predominantly a 'red' state, there has been a huge turn in political party affiliation here. Especially around Salt Lake.

What would you have said if this was a Republican? I cant even imagine!

(CNN) – New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney, a Democrat, apologized Monday for using the N word in a recent interview while recounting a phone call she had received.

"I apologize for having repeated a word I find disgusting," Maloney said in a statement. "It's no excuse but I was so caught up in relaying the story exactly as it was told to me that, in doing so, I repeated a word that should never be repeated."

Maloney, who is challenging Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand for the 2010 Democratic Senate nomination in New York, used the full racial slur in an interview with the Web site City Hall while taking aim at Gillibrand's record.

"I got a call from someone from Puerto Rico, said [Gillibrand] went to Puerto Rico and came out for English-only [education]. And he said, 'It was like saying n—r to a Puerto Rican,'" Maloney said. "I don't know-I don't know if that's true or not. I just called. I'm just throwing that out. All of her-well, what does she stand for?"

Earlier Monday, the Rev. Al Sharpton — a supporter of Gillibrand's bid — sharply criticized Maloney for using the word.

"The quote by Congresswoman Maloney if accurate is alarming and disturbing at best," he said in a statement. "No public official even in quoting someone else should loosely use such an offensive term and should certainly challenge someone using the term to him or her."

The controversy comes the same day Maloney is set to hold a big-ticket fundraiser that includes an appearance from former President Bill Clinton. Clinton has also attended a fundraiser for Gillibrand.

I would condemn it if that is how she saw black people but she does not. She merely repeated someone else's opinion about a comparison to something else.

As always stop Mooing... and btw has nothing to do with the Utah situation... you just want to hijack all threads to spew Anti Left rhetoric it seems instead of making a thread addressing the situation of using the "N" word in politics...

New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney, a Democrat, apologized Monday for using the N word in a recent interview while recounting a phone call she had received.

What about the outrage for an apology from all the rappers and kids that follow thier leads and use N*****R, Hoe, B*TCH, and a slew of others?

Oh wait... thats freedom of speech! What about her freedom of speech? Always a bias depending what side!

For me being of middle east descent and having people joke about me being a SAND N****R. It's just repulsive. There are just words that should not be accepted as okay to use no matter what context they are used.

JMO and it really pisses me off the double standards in this world!!

It's a protest Mooman... much like you would protest something you believe in... I guess you didn't read this part of the First Amendment:

"or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

---------------

First off I agree with your statements Mach, BUT the Mormon church is not government, and it is also private property. Step back 20 feet and then it's public property and they can't do Sh*t.

As for the kiss, to each there own. Good for you that you have someone. But if you're asked to leave private property and don't expect to be arrested.

Cheers!
