India names leader for ID program for 1 billion-plus Posted: 06:07 AM ET By Harmeet Shah Singh CNN
NEW DELHI, India (CNN) — India on Thursday named a top executive of a leading software services company as head of a program aimed at giving a permanent identifier to each of the country’s more than 1 billion people.
Nandan Nilekani, currently co-chairman of Infosys Technologies, will head the Unique Identification Authority of India, a government statement said.
In President Pratibha Devisingh Patil’s address to parliament on June 4, she said the identification program would be implemented in three years.
“This would serve the purpose of identification for development programs and security,” she said.

Wouldnt that be like our social security number system?

The "security" part is what concerns me. I have read numerous books, and seen a couple of sci-fi movies that show how things like this play out.
I don't doubt that at some point in the near future, we will all be tagged in some fashion. Barcode comment was just a reference to a movie I saw. It could be barcodes, RFID tags.....who knows. Big brother apparently is watching....or soon will be.
PS: BF....that was a reference to a movie I saw where everyone had a barcode tattooed on their arm at birth. If I can remember the name of the film, I'll post it.

It will happen eventually but not until society decides the benefits outweigh the risks. And despite revelations phobia there are a lot of benefits and efficiencies that would come with a national identification program like that.

Unfortunately, it's not society who makes the choice....it's the government. Just a matter of time and technology.

The gov would never implement a 'taboo' plan like that without being damned sure the populace would accept it.
Just like Social Security, talking about it is fine but actually making a change to it before it is in full blown crisis mode? No one is gonna risk their seat to do that.

Are you kidding me?!?! Were you consulted on the Iraq War? How about the "Patriot Act"? Dude, we usually see eye to eye....but you are naive if you think we, the people, would have a say in that.

Soldier starring Kurt Russell or the TV show Dark Angel with Jessica Alba?

The Iraq war was a knee jerk retaliation made possible by by using a man above reproach (Powell) to spread unverified and false information. It was about 'THEM', not us.
The Patriot Act is a waste of time and money. Have you ever heard of one instance in which information garnered under the Patriot Act has been used in a legal and effective way? There is a difference between data-mining and data hording. That's all the Patriot act really is, a big bank vault of data that ain't worth ****.
Bar codes or encrypted chips for identification or whatever scenario you dream up...if it isn't wrapped in cash and sold as a Christmas toy it is going to send a third of this nation into 'end of days' fervor, another tenth into conspiracy theory ecstasy, and another fifth into privacy mania.
You will have your barcode one day...but it ain't gonna be dictated by the government. You are gonna choose of your own free will to sign up for it yourself through your local bank branch or credit card company.

There will be no barcoding (or government mandated marking especially on the hand or forehead) in the U.S. anytime in the near future......
I reside in the "Bible Belt"......and I can tell you straight off (and putting my personal feelings aside); that would cause another civil war overnight. There are too many people in the South that would interpret such a thing to be the "mark of the Beast."
Think whatever you would like about the persons that believe this......but believe me when I tell "how it would be interpreted."
